Guest guest
I have wondered about the food on the plane too. Would a doctor's prescription work for that also? Just like is needed for Epi-pen's? It couldn't hurt to try it. Cheryl in MNrxp_us@...
Guest guest
I must have missed the beginning of this thread... I'm flying Southwest Airlines Thursday. They should still allow food on the plane, they always have. I'm just not going to bring water or anything like yogurt that could be considered a liquid. What airlines don't allow food? I don't travel much, never internationally- unfortunatley. I've never had a problem bringing my own food though. Molly Los Angeles I have wondered about the food on the plane too. Guest guest
Have you looked at Lara bars? They have no gluten, dairy or soy and are OK for vegan and kosher diets. In addition, they're quite tasty (we like the lemon, apple and cherry flavors as well as the cinnamon, but there are others including the chocolate Maya bars). We get them at Whole Foods but they're probably available in lots of other places. Presumably the TSA can figure out that they're not a "gel." %-) NewellBoston

Sadly, mint is a reflux trigger. I sometimes steal a bite from hubby. ygg

Guest guest
I just flew in from Japan- as it happens, I only brought some lara bars on board, but I've never had trouble in the past bringing food. It couldn't hurt to bring a doctor's note, if there are any problems. Actually, the GF meal I had on United coming back was pretty good! I was completely shocked. Smoked salmon, rice and wild rice, green beans and grilled chicken in a butter sauce, little baby rice cakes and (tired) lettuce. Breakfast was their weird (but fairly tasty) omelet (cooked in a muffin tin) with rice and ricotta, and very good breakfast potatoes. The meal over was nothing special though. > > I must have missed the beginning of this thread... > > I'm flying Southwest Airlines Thursday. I buy them at places that stock the full line of Lara Bars (so, Whole Foods has them, Trader Joe's does not). The chocolate line is called Maya. ygg

Guest guest
Trader Joe's in Reston VA has Lara Bars. Not a big selection, but a few. The best selection I've ever seen was at Wild Oats in the Denver area...lots of yummy flavors. Hopefully, we can get these past TSA so we have SOMETHING to eat in the air. I'm thinking maybe peanut butter and GF crackers, fruit, nuts. I used to take smoothies and yogurt, cottage cheese and such, but I guess those days are over. Sure would be nice if you could find more GF food IN the airport!!! > > > I have never seen the mint Lara bars. Where are they sold? Yes, but the TJs I've visited in VA don't have the Maya Lara Bars, which is what the question was about. I can generally buy 2-4 varieties of Lara Bars at TJs in Centreville and Tyson's. Whole Foods in Charlottesville carries the whole selection. Yum. ygg
Guest guest
Epipen question- My son has to carry one and I recently got an email from the Food Allergy and Anaphalaxis network regarding Epipens on planes. You can carry it on, as long as: 1. It is in the prescription box 2. the prescription name matches the name on the airline ticket (so I guess for kids, you have to buy a ticket for them) 3. You have a doctor's note explaining why you have to have it (ie peanut allergy, etc). I do not know the regulation for carrying Benedryl, but I suggest if you need it to get it in pill or tablet form for the carry-on, and carry the liquid in the checked luggage. Hope that helps... Guest guest
From the Dept. of FWIW: Last month I flew out to an athletic event my kids were participating in and had to take an epi-pen for myself as well as an epi-pen, benedryl and other meds for another boy who was participating. The airport screeners at both airports were extremely thorough but on neither flight (out/back) did anyone question the meds. This really surprised me, but they didn't care, didn't even look twice. Whether the recent events have changed this, I don't know. NewellBoston

Anyway, Knowing the flight from Helsinki to Heathrow does not have a GF option, I asked about carry on foods. They said as long as they have a note from the Dr stating it is a medical need, it is ok. Same with any meds (I also carry an epipen) long as the scrip is attached no problems. I also asked about the computer, for now, its out and batterys for laptops must be removed and in separate suitcase. This may change in the next few weeks. Best bet is to call the airline you are flying with, and see what they have to say. What one will allow, another may not.Best!CassiGluten free in downtown Imatra! Guest guest
When I have flown, my Epi-Pen has not needed to be in the box, but I have needed to have the prescription label on the container itself (much like an inhaler). I have also had the doc write on a prescription blank that I have severe allergies and that this medicine MUST remain with me at all times. I have never had a problem. Cheryl in MNrxp_us@...
