Hi,

>>I've contacted 6 people so far just this month with this problem. All are

at least 7 months out on their MGB. All have started to gain weight back.

Yes a >>smaller waist and dress size is nice but we could do that with

dieting. Of course it came back but apparently so is this . I don't want to

lose some of >>my weight only to have to have another surgery (this is the

one answer Dr.R. gives) to lose more and gain it back.<<

There are patients that will fail any type of surgery.

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty has a ~30% failure rate and Reports on Gastric

Bypass type surgery show failure rates of 5-10 % depending upon the quality

of the follow-up.

The Mini-Gastric Bypass is a gastric bypass and should have over 90-95% long

term success with failure increasing as long term follow up is accumulated.

We try to track each and every patient and desperately try to get every

patient to contact us with their results to keep the data as accurate as

possible.

Every weight of every patient that has ever been done is in our database.

The results are as follows:

Average weight at pre op evaluation 300 lbs. Average Weight loss at 1 month

30 lbs, 3 months 50 lbs, 6 months 80 lbs and 1 year 140lbs.

These values have been stable in our experience for two years.

Patients who weigh less should lose less and patients weighing more usually

lose more.

For the average to be 140 at one year that means some patient will lose

" only " 80-100 lbs at one year and others will lose 200-220+ in a year.

It does not mean everyone will lose all the weight they want to.

These results are as good or better than those reported for RNY open or

closed and seem better than Bilio-Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch

a much more radical and dangerous procedure.

One of the most attractive features of the Mini-Gastric Bypass is that if

the weight loss is felt to be inadequate after 1 year the Mini-Gastric

Bypass in contrast to the other weight loss surgeries can be revised to gain

added weight loss.

No surgery is perfect and everyone is always at risk to regain their weight

after this or any other weight loss surgery.

Please send me your updated weights and results so we can keep our

information as detailed and accurate as possible to keep everyone as fully

informed about the results as possible.

This is to Ann in Oklahoma and all the others....

In reference to the weight gain.. Like all others if you start eating or

pigging out what do yu think... You guys want something for nothing.. All the

talk about weight gain after surgery, expensive vitianms, etc... Its like

everything else yes surgery is wonderful for those of us who are extremenly

obese but we still have to control our portions sizes, and even so what is

that compared to a healthier life.

Maybe I have stepped on some toes here but even though I am still waiting

for the surgery which will be a while since I have alot tof weight to lose so

that the good Dr. will perform it on me , dieting after that I don't mind...

And another thing , yu dog the good Dr.R with questions like this and common

sence should tell you the answere... And ALL THE DOCTOR ASK YOU IN RETURN IS

TO GO TO WALMART AND BUY A $5;00 BOTTLE OF VITIAMNS.. LET'S GET REAL

HERE!!!!!! $5:00 A MONTH FOR A LIFETIME OF PEACE AND JOY IS ALL HE ASKS.....

AND TO ANSWER THE WEIGHT GAIN ...7 MONTHS OUT.... MY SISTER IS CELEBRATING

HER 1YEAR ANNNIVERSARY OF HAPPINESS WITH THE GOOD DOCTOR AND SHE HAS NOT HAD

ANY GAIN AT ALLL, HER LOSS HAS SLOWED BUT SHE STILL LOOSES A LITTLE EACH

MONTH AND SHE IS EXTREMENLY HAPPY FOR THE 120 POUNDS SHE HAS LOST AND IF SHE

DOSEN'T LOSE ANY MORE SHE IS HAPPY. SHE WATCHES WHAT SHE EATS DAILY AND SHE

IS FAITHFUL TO TAKE HER VITIAMNS 3 TIMES A DAY.

JUST MY OPINION THAT'S ALL

Dee,

It's great to hear from you again! I've been wondering where you got to.

Glad to hear you're doing so well. Personally, I'm down 55 lbs from my

surgery on 2-7-00. Keep in touch.

Hey, Gang! I'm " Yarnmama " from the MGB list with a new e-mail

address.

I had to drop AOL because it was dumping me off-line without warning.

I'm " Dee in MI " and I had my MGB 16 Dec 99. At about three months

post-op, I'm down 67# and many inches. The more important part is

that

my quality of life is so improved! My blood pressure is back to

normal, I can walk, stay awake and participate in my life again.

About

this weight re-gain issue: I don't know about the rest of you folks,

but I'm so pleased to be making progress toward being healthy once

more

and avoiding stroke or heart attack problems, that I'm willing to

consider re-gaining a bit of weight in three to five years. The

worst

that can happen is that I'll make another date with Dr. R and have

him

revise the MGB. And, hey! they'll give me another beautiful little

shower cap and some of those darling SCUD stockings...PLUS! I'll

have

a new pair of those keen little slippy-socks to wear. But wait!

don't

send your money in yet, there's more! Let's relax on weight

re-gain.

Let's look at the positive side. I have not been able to lose weight

for over fifteen years. My health was seriously compromised. I was

a

candidate for stroke, heart problems and certain types of cancers.

The

MGB has given me back my life. I'll be revving up my metabolism with

exercise and staying with the foods that Dr. R recommends: the Dean

Ornish diet. Let's concentrate on today...right now...doing what we

need to do to stay healthy and active. Leave tomorrow to itself.

What

is it the Good Book tells us?...each day has trouble enough of it's

own. My Irish gramma used to say...don't go borrowing trouble,

there's enough to handle today as it is. Love to all of you folks

who

are changing your lives by continuing with the MGB! It's going to be

better and better every day as you are further " out " from your

surgery.

Focus on today, friends; today is all we've got. Yesterday is gone

and tomorrow ain't here yet. Dee in MI (MGB 16Dec99)

Amen!!! YARNMAMA!!! Beautifully stated. What a wonderful attitude

that you have!!! Also to GENZ, I love your posts, we are at about

the same stage it seems from your info. I just want to ask everybody

to move me up on the prayer lists for tomorrow, I see my PCP tomorrow

afternoon for referral and physical. Thanks! Also remember Claire -

redhead from Florida- she has her surgery tomorrow and she is such a

prayer warrior and inspiration for us all. Thanks again.

You are right---this surgery is only a tool, not a panacea. I belong to

another WLS group where most have never heard of Dr R.......most of them

having had VBG or RNY. And the stories they tell are so different than what

goes on here. Of course many of the patients in that group are by far

larger than the max weight to be qualified for MGB. The thing that

convinces me most about the MGB is that we are all overweight for different

reasons. From what I read on the other group, is that they still have major

cravings of the foods they love that made them large in the first place.

Dumping syndrome is an effective negative reinforcement therapy, but once

those patients stop dumping, they find themselves fighting the ugly monster

of food addiction all over again. I have been on this MGB list for three

months, and I do not hear of patients struggling with cravings that they

once had. Like Dr R told me, by using the lesser curvature of the stomach

with the bypass, a chocolate donut no longer gives the internal satisfaction

that it once did. I hear all the time how MGB patients can eat a cookie, or

a small piece of cake, but no longer have the urge to eat an entire row of

Oreos, or 1/2 of a sheet cake.

And yes, with a smaller stomach you do have to be choosy about nutrients

taken in your body. But from what I've heard on the list is that your body

actually craves things that are good for you, not the high calorie foods of

old. And they say they have actual satiety signals from their bodies now on

much less food. That alone to me would be worth everything.....to be able

to have my body tell me without gorging that hey, I can stop eating now. :-)

Hi there! The list I belong to is ossg-se (AT) e. There are other

lists for your particular geographical area---the one I belong to is the

Southeast. They share quite a few stories, and from what I hear of your

surgery, you are doing wonderful in comparison. :-))) Kudos to your surgeon.

Thanks so much for the address. I had the RNY before I knew about the mgb

or I would have tried to get the MGB, but what is done is done and I am

doing o.k. It seems the weight loss is about the same, you can just eat

more than I can. I am still about 2-3 tablspoon of food although I have

been able to tolerate more veggies and some meat. I think some of my

problems is I can't tell when I am full so I have to just sort of measure my

food or else if I take 1 bite to many then I hurl everything back up. Or

else I may eat to fast at times anyway it has gotten much better. I agree

Dr. R seems to be a fantastic Doctor and very considerate of his patients.

He has even emailed me and answered my questions. That is super. I hav

eenjoyed all the information and friends that I have gotten on this list and

I am very thankful for it. We all are striving for the same results some of

us just have to go to more extreme measures. I don't really have cravings

per se but I think about having a steak and then think theres really not

much use to buy a steak for 2-3 bites. At least I don't considerate a

craving, I think it is more psychological self-pity ha ha

Dolores P. S. I love getting into the smaller sizes. I will have to

transfer my pleasure from eating to clothes shopping.

Delores,

You are doing wonderfully. But it is very interesting to listen to people

on the other list to get their take of the situation. There are many

success stories, and unfortunately, some other stories are frightening.

It's really broadened my perspective on the whole thing. Makes me realize

how lucky I am to live so close to Dr R. (40 mins away) The RNY is a tried

and true procedure, and I've seen pictures of individuals that have lost

alot of weight. But I also hear stories of the ones that have stretched the

pouch out and can eat quite normally and still fight cravings and

overeating. It is really good that you are measuring your food. I always

here the chant " chew, chew, chew " on the other list to avoid passage problems

(especially meats). One lady got a piece of meat stuck not too long post op

and had to go to the hospital to have it removed. For either surgery it is

a lifetime change and an adjustment to routines.

It has always been good to have you on the list. Puts it all in perspective

that RNY is not the " other surgery. " Are you able to tolerate beef? That's

seems to be the one thing that MGBer's can't tolerate, although I haven't

heard much about wanting it either. I mean it's no big deal to not be able

eat something if you don't crave it. Quite another to crave it and can't

eat it. (But we ALL know that--it's why we're hereLOL)

So where is your web page with your before and after pictures??

HI FG

I have tried hamburger meat in soups and had 1/2 of taco supreme but no

other beef. I have tried deer meat cok in crock pot like pot roast which is

similar and it always comes back up. I always dice it up tiny and then chew

like crazy but it just doesn't want to stay down so I guess I am not ready

for it. Fish I am tolerating o.k. and chicken.

Now for the web page, would you believe I don't have the faintest idea how

to make one. I id take pictures when I got home from the hospital but have

not taken since. I haven't considered it after yet I want to lose another

105 pounds, THEN I will be ready to take some pictures.

But Delores, it's important to log you progress along the way. :-)) What

you should do, is scan pictures now as you're losing, then after you get

down the 105 more pounds, post them all to the web page at once. There are

a lot of free services that offer web page help along with the web space.

You can either go to ask.com and " ask Jeeves " for information or do a web

search for free webspace and instruction on the internet. Tripod has a

service that has an editor and so does Geocities and Angelfire. It would

be fun to unleash a little creativity. There are also TONS of websites that

offer FREE graphics, it can be so overwhelming to pick out graphics that

interest you because there are so many choices! (like a kid in a candy

store) LOL We'd love to keep up with your progress. Maybe all of us MGBers

can start our own webring that newbies coming in (I'm still preop,

unfortunately) can view and see all of our personal progress! :-)

Well maybe I will give it a try. I always need some coaching to get started

with creativity but once it gets to rolling I can come up with some pretty

good ideas. I am going to my daughters this weekend for two weeks and will

have her take a current picture of me and get it developed. She is having

her third child Monday by C-Section and I am going to watch the other two

(entertain them actually 4-6 year olds) They keep me so busy watching

movies with them and going to the park and fishing I can hardly breathe or

visit with my daughter and my youngest son also lives in Cape Girardeau. I

used to live below my daughter and son-in-law(I was daddy while he went to

school in Kentucky for 1 1/2 years) and The kids visited me several times a

day and they can't hardly stand it since I live so far away. I used to

watch discovery channel with them every night. So we are all looking forward

to 10 days together and my weight loss should improve because they will keep

me busy. I am going to be 55 on May 9, Its getting aliitle harder to keep

up with them but they are good just very active. But maybe the second week I

will have help me see what we can do for a WEB

Page. Thanks, its been a pleasure reading the posts and when I get back I

will get back in touch. I am leaving Friday morning at 6:30. I really need

to unsubscrib Thursday can you tell the address to do that I tried before

and has 1104 messages when I got home, needless to say I wasn't successful.
