Guest guest
Hi I had my two sons on the omegas and vit. E - one with Apraxia and one with no issues at all. My 'no issues' son has had the most behavioural problems of the two. He was very emmotional (lots of crying without reason), aggresive, irritable and excitable. His voice would become very high pitched at times and he would be impossible to calm down and if you tried to calm him he would lash out and start hitting, kicking and screaming - all this from a 6 year old boy that has and never has had any issues at all! It became too much so after about 3 weeks of having been on the vitamin E, I took him off it and he is now back to his normal happy, carefree self. I have continued with the omegas as he had been on them for months before the E without a problem. My Apraxic son has had sleep issues (no longer has his usual 2-3 hour afternoon nap but is so exhausted by the end of the day he becomes slightly hyperactive)and can be a little more defiant than he used to be but has not experienced the same problems as my other son so he continues to take both omegas and vitamin E. My thoughts were that perhaps my 'no issues' son had such a reaction because he did not lack vitamin E and therefore did not need supplementing yet my apraxic son does, so his body doesn't react to it so negatively. Kind of confuses your theory though doesn't it?!! Katrina > > Hi All, > My son has been on 400 IU natural Vit, E for 2 weeks. > > I had been reading about others' experiences w/their children. Guest guest
A good question. Don't know. However is a child is suffering from a vit E deficiency for whatever reason, I would image that a huge number of changes are going on once you start to fix it. Are you also giving omega 3? Have you seen any improvement in speech or coordination? I am giving vit E to my non-apraxia " normal " daughter who has asthma, and I started taking it myself. The only side effect we've seen was no asthma exacerbation with our last 2 colds (which has never happened for either one of us). - > Hi All, > My son has been on 400 IU natural Vit, E for 2 weeks. > > I had been reading about others' experiences w/their children. Guest guest
Hi and Katrina, My son has been on the Nordic Naturals Omega Complete since May. I noticed big improvements with that. He hit a plateau, so I tried giving him one EPA as well, but had no results. Now I'm trying 4 Omegas w/the Vit. E and haven't noticed anything yet. (Any suggestions on new Omega dosages/formulations? I am so missing the great strides he had been making!) Well, as far as who responds to Vit .E and for whatever reasons, 'tis puzzling. I am wondering how Vitamin E interacts with brain chemistry, and in what capacity is it responsible for speech mechanisms. My son has been such a handful. So then I wonder why its components produce these results. Kind of like " Here is the effect, and what chemistry comprises the cause. " Katrina, we had our first conference last night. Grant has really improved and met all his IEP goals. I was disappointed that I couldn't discuss any other issues, such as apraxia and cluttering. But his IEP review is at the end of November, so I'll be able to address these things then. Thanks everybody, On 11/3/06, trina3103 <trina3103@...> wrote: > > Hi > I had my two sons on the omegas and vit. E - one with Apraxia and > one with no issues at all. Guest guest
Hi , Thought I'd run this Vit. E product by you, and see what you think about its contents. Maybe what to add, change, etc. I'm confused with the gamma stuff. I hope it'll soak in eventually. This is the product: Carlson's E-Gems Elite (Natural Source Vit. E) Serving: 1 softgel Label: Vit. E ( as d-Alpha Tocopherol) 400 IU d-Gamma Tocopherol 100mg d-Beta & d-Delta Tocopherol 40mg Total tocotrienols 20mg It says that the tocotrienols are supplied by palm and rice oil concentrates. From what you are saying, then this Gamma amount is too low compared to the Alpha? Why would manufacturers produce this imbalance? Is it because it is only critical when supplementing for language, etc.? Should the extra Gamma be given at each dosing, or is it just a once a day addition? Are there any Vit. E products that already contain the appropriate ratios for our children? When you're talking about bumping the EFA's up, do you mean the EFA's in the form of the Nordic Naturals Omega Completes (3-6-9)? Thanks so much for your time (and patience!) Guest guest
My son JoeJoe has been on Omega 369 for a little over a year now, he experienced tremendous amounts of speech from this wonderful Vitamin/supplement. Two weeks ago I started JoeJoe on vitamin E and a high Gamma, I did not notice anything speech related but I did notice a little issue with his behavior which I chalked up to being " typical kid behavior " . A week after starting the high gamma I added another dose of vitamin E.....This past Friday I received a phone call from his school Teacher, it seems that JoeJoe has been having some major behavior/aggressive issues at school. All starting about the same time that I started the high gamma's. My husband and I decided it was in his best interest to stop giving JoeJoe the Gamma and E. We also sat down and went over his behavior at home and seriously thought about when we noticed the change. It was when we added the gamma. This vitamin/supplement did not agree with JoeJoe at all. He became someone that I did not like. I have not given him a dose since Thursday and I spent the weekend giving him lots of water, orange juice and some other juices in an attempt to " detox " ? his Lil body of this vitamin that seems to have caused alot of problems. I love this wonderful " family " network we have and I will confess that I was a bit relieved that there are parents who also experienced this type of behavior in their child when giving them the vitamin E. I will continue with the Omega's and will just count my blessings for them and for the wonderful parents on this list who share their experiences. Thank you....Tammy Life is too short to spend it placing blame on things and people who no longer make a difference. --------------------------------- Low, Low, Low Rates! Guest guest
Hi Tammy, My granddaughter also reacted to vitamin E in two days or so by becoming impulsive and aggressive, not at all herself. Behavior included scratching people, biting her mother, and pulling other children's hair. Her mother took her off of vitamin E after a week and she returned to her normal self within several days. Apparently she is not one of those deficient in E. She continues on the Omega supplements she's been taking for 2 years, which have seemed to help with her attention issues though not with her speech. She remains severly apraxic at 4 1/2. She communicates by ASL, a huge help to her and all of us. Guest guest
Are you seeing any benefits with the vitamin E or just changes in behavior? Are you also giving it with omega 3? We definitely saw periods of transient behavioral changes during our omega and vit E experiences with ph, but it was coming with fantastic advances in speech and coordination. ph threw his first temper tantrum shortly after we started the vit E. (But he was nearly 3 and NEVER had a temper tantrum before...that wasn't exactly normal either). Much of what I was seeing in him was normal developmental behavior (even if not necessarily desirable), but it was a " change " for him. Things eventually evened out. He is definitely not as " easy " to handle as he used to be, but he is now a mischievious, playful little 3 year old with a great sense of humor...who will let you know when he is not happy with you (by screaming) etc...but he's a normal kid with good days and bad days too. I DO NOT miss the silence. He definitely struggled with the new pain sensation thing too. Pain is not fun. He had never experienced it before. So there was also a lot more crying with the bumps and falls...because my gosh...it hurt! Again, I saw that as a good thing - in the larger picture, but had to kiss a lot more boo-boos. He also stopped pulling off his toenails and biting his fingernails down to nothing...because that also hurt. If behaviour is over the top, and there are not good benefits coming with it, then it is not the appropriate supplement for your child. At least you tried it..., unfortunately it didn't help...time to stop it. This certainly will not be the fix for everyone. If there are surges with a little more difficult behavior, it may be worth trying to wait out the storm. These kids go through phases normally - that can last 2-3 weeks, whether on supplements or not. It is so important that those experiencing " bad effects " continue to post too. This is a learning process for all of us. -claudia > Hi All, > My son has been on 400 IU natural Vit, E for 2 weeks. > > I had been reading about others' experiences w/their children. Guest guest
I haven't started my son on Vitamin E yet, but when we moved his fish oil dose to twice a day there was OMG crazy behavior! For about 2 weeks straight he was like a tornado. I am talking about flushing things down toilets, swiping bookshelves empty, emptying dresser drawers, stringing toilet paper through the house, getting mad at his brother over everything and anything. He couldn't be out of our sight or he was doing something extremely naughty! We have been on this for a month now, and he is just now back to the way he was before upping his dose. Lots of new words and repeating, so it was worth it to go through that horrible storm!!! I am sure we will experience the same type of behavior when we start the Vit. E or go to the next dose.
