Guest guest
My DD15's stomach ache would start within 5 minutes of eating the offender. It would last for about an hour or 2, sometimes more. She would have to get up from the dinner table and go lie on her bed with the heating pad for a while. Sometimes gingerale would help to lessen the pain, but not always. Margie RIn South Central PA...on the Mason Dixon Line So my 5 yr old keeps getting stomach aches every time she eats so I've been keeping a journal. She usually gets them as she's eating or immediately following and they only last a couple minutes. Like tonight she was eating a hot dog, she said she was sick. She'd only eaten half then a few minutes later she ate the rest of it and said it didn't hurt anymore. Today she ate teddy grahams and got sick but it only lasted a short time and was gone. My question is how long does it take for a Celiac's stomach ache to come about after eating and how long are they usually sick?? TIA. Guest guest
, That type of behavior was common in my daughter before we realized what ws going on. She would stop eating claiming she didn't feel well. But come back and eat some more-seemingly alright. She would get up and go to the bathroom--at EVERY meal. Knowing that eating stimulates the intestines to start working, I used to think that she just had a heightened system. We actually had made fun of it; because it never mattered whether we ate at 4pm or as late as 9pm, as soon as we would eat, she would go to the bathroom. It never failed. Looking back, of course we feel that horrible parent guilt for not putting the clues together sooner. She was pre-school at the time and we thought it was just the typical kid " I don't want to eat what you have made " syndrome. Not so. She was the first one to be diagnosed (at 6 yrs old), yet the fourth generation (that I know about) to have problems. My niece is the same way. She eats in extremely tiny amounts. Often, but tiny amounts. Her bone growth is a full 3 years behind according to scans the doctor has done. They are recommending hormone therapy and the parents have not brought up celiac to their doctor. " Well, I am sure if the doctor thought it likely, they would bring it up..... " We all know better here...... Use your instincts. Get your child tested. Trust what they are telling you when they say they don't feel well. It can be really hard for them. They can be horribly hungry (both of my children had insatiable appetites pre-diagnosis), yet they often times don't want to eat because every time they put stuff into their mouth, they feel horrible. Let me know if you have more questions. Cheryl in MN

Guest guest
Thank you , that's why I asked. I was afraid she was getting her stomachaches to fast because I read that post too so I didn't know if this was an actual sign of Celiac or something different. No, by looking at her journal, most everything makes her sick. But one day mac and cheese will make her sick then the next day it wont. All this journal is doing is making me more confused. lol. Could she be intolerant of another ingred. in the hot dogs? Nitrates or nitrites? A post yesterday referred to reactions coming faster to foods that we're allergic to/intolerant of, as opposed to reacting to gluten. You might be able to pin-point a whole other offender through the journal. Hope you both hang in there! Guest guest
In my experience and with my own Silly Yak kid, there isn't any rhyme or reason to what causes the stomach ache one day and not the next. I got so fed up with the stomach ache, that I went on a bland food diet, eating on plain white rice, pasta (wheat), bread (wheat), banana, potato etc, and guess what? It actually helped the stomach aches!!!!!!!!! They went away for a couple weeks, but started all over again. My son got stomach aches (and headaches) only 2 or 3 times a week. Now that he is gluten free, gluten will produce a stomach ache every time. If you have reason to suspect celiac, just throw out the food diary and have her tested!!!!!!!!!!!!!1sendn9112u@... wrote: Thank you , that's why I asked. Guest guest
Some food dyes will make children sick. I won't let my son have mac and cheese anymore because he reacts to food colorings pretty badly. His is usually more on the hyperactive/angry side as opposed to stomach aches though. Guest guest
My husband will react with stomach pains with in 15 minutes sometimes less. He insisted that our tiny little communion wafers at church were not going to be a problem for him. This was about a week after being diagnosed. Within 10 minutes he had stomach pains and about two hours later had terrible gas and bloating that lasted most of the afternoon. Needless to say he learned his lesson and now passes up communion or fakes eating it if he leading or serving. Guest guest
She's already tested positive, I'm just keeping the diary for the GI specialist and for myself to see if I notice a pattern. Guest guest
Because I hate going to the dr. and being asked a bunch of questions I can't answer like when does your child get her stomachaches, how long do they last, how many times a day does she have a bm. I'm nervous at dr's and if I have it all written down I can just look it up without second guessing myself. I like to be prepared. Why do you need to worry about what type of pattern there is? Guest guest
Thank you Maureen, that's exactly right and IF her endoscope comes back neg. then I'll be all the farther ahead in finding out what else it may be because I don't want her suffering any longer than she has to. Just because a child is diagnosed as celiac and goes gluten-free does not automatically mean you are done finding food problems. Guest guest
But if she has elevated antibodies, esp. ttg-iga, and symptoms, a neg. biopsy does not rule out celiac. I think I have articles bookmarked on this if you are at the point of needing them, but I'm sure you've run across lots of people who have had positive blood work with neg. biopsies. If not, spend some time on the boards at Delphi and Celiac.com. sendn9112u@... wrote: Thank you Maureen, that's exactly right and IF her endoscope comes back neg. then I'll be all the farther ahead in finding out what else it may be because I don't want her suffering any longer than she has to. Guest guest
Well, the biopsies are a little more subjective to read that the blood tessts. If a Dr. isn't used to seeing blunted villi instead of flat villi, he may think they're normal. Guest guest
Can that go just the opposite too? Have a neg. blood work but still actually have it?
