Guest guest
Hello all! My daughter was diagnosed in October, and although we went gf, I think I have only now totally elimenated all hidden sources. We were in the middle of a cross country move when she was diagnosed so now we are searching for a new doctor, etc. We also ate out a lot on the road, and I am sure she ate contaminated food at some point. Anyways, since on the diet she has gained a little over 3 lbs and she has also gotten taller too. This is great progress, although slow for me. She is still frequently constipated and has a VERY little appetite. I try not to push food if she doesn't want it because I don't want food to be so negative for her. I have been giving her pediasure hoping it will help. Question: For those of you who used pediasure to help your little ones tackle their malabsorption issues, how much did they drink perday? Did it affect their appetite for real food? How fast did you start to see results? Also, what should I ask a doctor to test her for malabsorption? I want to be totally prepared and not not be able to come up with the words in the office. Sometimes I am so intimidated to insist on good treatment! Thanks for your help! Guest guest
Sara-- I can't answer your questions about pediasure cuz if my daughter drinks it, she will not eat anything! 2 oz of pediasure will make Gabby not eat anything for the rest of the day...and getting 2 oz into her is AWFUL! PLEASE let me know if you get any answers...Gabby also gained 3 pounds and 3 " going gf...and has stopped growing again! Gabby is 3y 10m, 21 pounds and 35 " tall. We have another GI appointment on the 17th...Don't know what they will say since Gabby has not gained again since May. Again, if anyone has ideas...magic weight/height gain pills (!!!), ways to make a child LOVE to eat (we try not to make eating an issue), weight-gaining food that she can eat a TON of--butter, mayo, cream, cheese, etc all work for 2 bites & that's IT. 2 bites per day is what Gabby will eat of these things, no more. It gets REALLY frustrating. Gabby's favorite foods are fruits & veggies--plain--DO NOT ADD BUTTER, etc! GRRR! Sorry to vent! Please let me know if you get ideas! Laurel > > Hello all! Guest guest
Sara, My daughter was on Pediasure for just under 2 years after her diagnosis. They had me give her normal meals and three Pediasures a day. Then they cut her down to 2 a day. She got healthier but she did not get any bigger really. She is getting tall now but last time I had her weighed she only weighed in at just under 30 pounds and she is 4 1/2 now. I am hoping when I go in she will have a great weight gain but I am not holding my breath because she doesn't look like she has gained anything. A 3 pound weight gain seems great to me and I would be dancing with that news! As for the meals I found the Pediasure cut her appetite and so we had to give her it away from a meal and use it more like a snack. Also when we took her down to 2 a day that helped a lot. ,___
Guest guest
The best way to increase my son's (age 6) appetite is more exercise. Since he was 2 (and undiagnosed) he has been a lousy eater - it can take him over an hour to finish half of a kid sized meal. However, this summer he has met some new kids in the neighborhood and every evening before dinner the 4 of them ride their bikes like little maniacs up and down the block for 30 minutes - he is eating much better, especially at dinner which has always been the biggest problem. I know you might think if your child already isn't getting enough calories, encouraging them to burn even more might be the opposite of what you want, but he really does take enough extra to more than balance what he burns - exercise stimulates the appetite. Exercise should also help with constipation, as would fresh/dried fruit as the after/between meal snack and extra water. As for his Pediasure, that's part of his breakfast, which has always been his best meal. He drinks one Pediasure/day which has been enough to really kick-start his growth. He's also been GF for over 2.5 years and I think we are getting his malabsorbtion under control and he finally starting to gain/grow much better. I think just over the summer he has gained about 3 pounds and no longer looks like quite the skeleton he used to in his swim trunks. Maureen > > Hello all! Guest guest
Being a new mom, I didnt know (nor looked into it) that Pedisure is GF. Are ALL their flavors GF??? Thanks
Guest guest
My girl is 14 months old. My hubby and I both have CD, and we did give her 2 teether cookies (one a day for 2 days) and she was sick for like 5 days....so we NEVER give her gluten anymore. We will have her tested when she gets older, but for now she is strictly GF. Her weight and height seem to be pretty good (27 inches and about 24 lbs). Do you know of alternatives for younger kids? Also, is the vanilla with fiber the ONLY pedisure flavor I have to avoid (when she gets older)?
Guest guest
No, not all Pediasure is GF - do not use the Vanilla w/ Fiber for a celiac child. When you say " new mom " - how old is your child? I think (but could easily be wrong) that Pediasure isn't for kids under 2. There are special supplements for younger kids. Also, is the vanilla with > fiber the ONLY pedisure flavor I have to avoid (when she gets older)? If her growth is good, can you tell me why you're looking for an industrial strength nutritional supplement? It sounds like even though your daughter may be celiac, right now she isn't being harmed by that, so she might be better off with just a healthy diet and vitamins if her pedi reccomends them. If she does need a supplement, it would probably be best to determine why first, as many specialized formulas are meant to help with a specific problem. And I used to know dozens of them from memory, but not anymore - old age creeping in, I guess. ;-) Yes, the last time I checked on Pediasure the only glutened flavor was the one with added fiber, so all the others should be safe. Guest guest
Curious...all the ingredients are the same for the vanilla & vanilla w/fiber--except soy protein is higher on the list for w/fiber version. Under what ingredient name is gluten hidden? (great, another mental note of something to avoid for DS...) Guest guest
Personally I haven't read the label on the fiber version. I called the company and asked which products are GF and which are not, and the rep told me the fiber is/could be from wheat and to avoid it, so that's what I go by. Things kept changing in this world, so perhaps they have switched away from wheat as the fiber.
