I think you should put her special ed but.... also have her pushed in the

orginal class she was in for specials(art, gym, library) for lunch, recess. it

won't be such a change and she will get the help she needs. or try to get a

aide for her in orginal class.

My son was put into a smaller sped class but for 1/2 day is put into higher

functioning sped class where his best friend is. he looooves it and really

thriving in this situation. he gets the one on one for the things he has

trouble with and then has the practice in a big class for lessons, friendships

and has the role models for speech and language.

hope this helps

[ ] Introduction & Please Help!

My name is Yvette & I am a mother to Alyssa a born at 23 weeks 1

pound 7 ounces & 12.25 inches long who is now 6.5 years old 45

pounds 44 inches tall. She was in the NICU for 3 months & had the

typical issues such as jaundice & Apnea & Bradychardia, etc., no IVH

or NEC & on the ventilator for 2 months.

My daughter had been on track & age appropriate for speech & learning

(could say her colors & alphabet at 18 months) according to the O.T

& Speech Therapists until this year. As of June the Developmental

Pediatrician feels that my dd is delayed in Expressive & Cognitive

Speech. It seems that when you ask her conceptual questions she does

not understand. For instance if you ask her why she does not like

school she will not answer or will answer " Yes " . If you ask her to

identify her house or where she lives she can answer those questions

correctly.

Also I have noticed that my dd still Parallel Plays instead of

playing with her peers. This is a 3-4 year old behavior proving

delays.

The Child Study Team at school where she attends Kindergarten did

evaluate her last week & this was a part of their findings too. She

scored low on most of the tests with the exception that she scored

very well on the academic part of the test i.e., colors, shapes, the

alphabet, body recognition, mazes, etc. She tests poorly in the

writing part of the test too & she is delayed in expressive &

cognitive speech. She is also very passive & shy around children and

has some issues with sensory processing. She will put her fingers in

here ears if there is a sound that disturbs her, for example when we

are in a public bathroom & the toilet flushes very loudly.

The Child Study Team is recommending that I take her out of regular

Kindergarten class & put her in the Special Ed. Class which is

upsetting to me to pull her out since this is her first experience

with school & her friends are in this class. This is her first

experience with making friends & she is an only child. She is

particularly close to one girl in her class. Especially since my

husband was in a near fatal car accident in February & 1 week ago

almost died again from blood clots in his lungs. But that is another

story. My dd has had so much turmoil in her life this year that to

take her out of this class really concerns me as well.

My dd has been receiving O.T. privately at a Weisman Children's

Rehabilitation Hospital here in Voorhees New Jersey since June.

Unfortunately I do not see a big change.

She is on the wait list for Speech Therapy & Feeding Therapy as well

as since she is 6.5 y.o. & does not chew food; I puree her meals.

She has been twice to another intensive feeding program in Hershey

PA too.

I would grately appreciate any advice, suggestions or names of drs.,

Speech Pathologists, foods, vitamins or supplements that might help

my dd.

I am so overwhelmed by all of this & could use the experience of

others that have been through this.

I apologize for the long post & thank you for allowing me to join

this group.

Hi Yvette-

If your daughter attends a public school, they are required to address

her special needs in the least restrictive environment. I would ask

them what she would get in the special ed classroom that they are not

able to provide in her current class. I agree that it's a bad idea.

Often schools will suggest such a move because it puts less burden on

them with respect to offering services.

I also don't see how the school can make her wait for services that

she is entitled to. It is their responsibility to provide her speech

therapy if she has a demonstrated need.

Carnaware, essential fatty acids (omega 3), vitamin E and A could be

helpful. My kids take these plus others.

You've got a lot on your plate - best wishes to you and your daughter.

Hi Yvette,

I'm not in NJ, so I can't help with names of people to seel, but I can offer

this: Your school district is obliged to educate your daughter in the " least

restrictive environment. " This means trying to keep her in a regular education

setting with regular education students/peers - this may mean she needs

modifications to the curriculum, a teacher's assistant to help her keep up with

the class, extra help in certain subject areas where she is pulled out into a

resource room for only a small part of the day, extra time, assistive

technology, etc.

The least restrictive environment is obviously open to interpretation to some

degree, but it definitely should not mean a sudden change from a regular K class

to a special education class without trying many, many, many other steps in

between. The school has to try to help Alyssa stay with her peers in a regular

education setting. The child study team should have a whole list of methods,

practices, like a hierarchy of the least amount of help moving up to the most

amount of help (ie. full time special education). These are all supposed to be

tried before they suggest that Alyssa be moved to a special education setting

for her entire school day.

I hope this makes some sense. I used to be a special education teacher before

I had my children. Now I'm mom to an apraxic child, so I'm on the other side of

the table, too!

Yvette,

Don't move her into a special education class. In my district that is a fatal

error. My son is so far delayed because I listened to my school district. Ask

them to provide your daughter with a one on one aid in her present kindergarten

class. Make sure they get her an aid that is trained too. Your daughter is

entitled to the least restrictive environment. And that is in your current

setting with aid support if needed.

Good Luck,

Lorraine

Hi Lorraine,

Thank you, thank you thank you!!!

Thank you for your advice. I have felt that this was a HUGE mistake. Where

do you live? We are in Washington Township, NJ.

As of know there is a teaching assistant in the class but she is leaving in

December.

I think that I am going to have to ask for a hearing in regard to this.

Good luck to you too!

fatal error. My son is so far delayed because I listened to my school

district. Ask them to provide your daughter with a one on one aid in her

present kindergarten class. Make sure they get her an aid that is trained

too. Your daughter is entitled to the least restrictive environment. And

that is in your current setting with aid support if needed.

Good Luck,

Lorraine

I apologize for the long post & thank you for allowing me to join

this group.

Yvette
