Use of B. cepacia

Pat,

you are absolutely right here. Bacterial contamination happens from

time to time and the products have to be recalled then.

The only exception is the use of B.cepacia as a biopesticide for

crops. Trade name is Blue Circle and it's use is a constant point of

discussion between the agrochemical industry and CF interest groups.

The latest news I have found about this is from 4/2000:

" Update on Bulkholderia Cepacia Products

At the CF Foundation's urging, the Environmental Protection Agency

(EPA) has decided to reassess all registered products using

Bulkholderia cepacia. EPA is also reviewing Scientific Advisory

Panel findings from July 1999 questioning scientists' ability to

determine if there are any strains of B. cepacia which cannot infect

CF patients. The CF Foundation is pleased that Agrium, Inc., has

withdrawn its application to EPA for approval of a pesticide using B.

cepacia. Also, Stine Microbial Products has voluntarily relabeled

its B. cepacia pesticide to limit usage to turf application,

eliminating aerosol uses. "

Hope this helps.

Peace

Torsten
