Guest guest
Well, Abby still hasn't been eating hardly anything, drinking very little and her fever went up tonight to 101.3. We tried to give her Tylenol but she throw it up, tried again and she threw it up again. She's been running a slight fever since Friday at 99 then it went up to 100 and then up to 101. She wasn't throwing up before and hasn't thrown up since. I called our advice nurse who said that since she is possible CF and has a cough with mucus and her nose being all runny and stuffed up, not taking food and water like she should, her stools changing, the fever and the fact that she wouldn't keep the medicine down then I should take her to the ER and not to give her any cough medicine that would stop her from coughing because she could die if she has CF and doesn't cough it up. Well the know it all ER doctor was insisting on giving it to her and I had to repeatedly tell him no, like 5 times. He had such an attitude the whole time. Of course I was getting one when he wouldn't listen to me. Then I tried to explain why she shouldn't have any and he interrupted me and said whatever, we won't give her any then with an attitude. I just about lost it tonight. I am suppose to follow up her regular pediatrician in the morning at 7:30. She better not argue with me. I'm on my last rope. Until I know that she doesn't have CF then I am not going to give her any cough medicine. Karrie www.clik.to/abigail
Guest guest
Karrie, Don't worry... your child won't die from cough medicine. Though it's better not to give Cfers any cough medicine, but sometimes, when they just won't stop coughing at night, they're better with cough medicine. You can give her regular DM (stands for Dextromethorphan) like Dimetapp DM. When I give nightime cough medicine I like to give Leo Delsym, because it's a 12 hour cough relief. How old is Abby ? Because this medicine is not recommended under one year. For 1-2 years the dosage is 1.25 ml (1/4 tsp) As for the Tylenol that she throws up.. you can buy suppositories of Feverall, it's acetaminophen like Tylenol. Good luck , mom of Leo, 3 wcf and Colin 7 months wocf Abby went to the ER tonight Well, Abby still hasn't been eating hardly anything, drinking very little and her fever went up tonight to 101.3. Guest guest
ALL EXCELLENT ADVISE. jump on it . I cant understand why that doc ??? didn't explain that to you as well .It is so simple. It isn't going to kill them anyway. It isn't something your going to take but in extreme ---nothing else works ---times, anyway. You can call a CF ctr. and they will most likely tell you the same thing. Bless your heart , trying so hard to do everything right and some dufuss doc gets all uppity .he sure isn't ever going to have a big private practice. UGH!!! Take care..... .heed Val's advice---Its good LOVE & HUGS, GrandmomBEV Abby went to the ER tonight Well, Abby still hasn't been eating hardly anything, drinking very little and her fever went up tonight to 101.3. Guest guest
Karrie, It sounds like you are going through an awful lot right know. I wish I had some advice for you at this time. I find it difficult to understand why a diagnosis is taking so long...I mean for the cf. You keep at it and I am sure you will more in control when you know what you are facing and what treatment Abby will need. Please feel free to email me. Guest guest
, Abby is 41/2 but she has the weight and height of a 18 month old baby. I guess there aren't any suppositories for cough medicine is there? I would think she would throw it up too. They did finally give me suppositories for her. He was just going to give her liquid. I said, didn't you hear what I said, she won't keep it down. So then he gave me the suppositories. By the time I had to take her to the hospital our store on post was closed, I'm not sure if they carrying them or not (the suppositories), I've never seen them. But I do have some now. What would you suggest about trying to get her to eat. I've tried everything. Guest guest
GrandmomBEV I doubt that doctor will ever leave the military, I would say they would be the only ones that would hire him, lol. He was just so rude and just rushed through Abby. I know that I tend to be over protective and extra careful with my kids but he shouldn't have argued with me. I don't even give my normal 6 year old cough medicine, I just think it's better to let her cough it all up. Of course if it was severe and waking her up at night or something I would give it to her. Abby's coughing stops for awhile when I have her cough it up. I went in there to get the suppositories and to make sure she was ok and didn't have pneumonia or anything and I was a little concerned over her not eating because she weighs so little right now she can't afford to lose weight. I caught pneumonia here in June, Germany doesn't have the best weather. She had a check up with her pediatrician who said that she was not giving her cough medicine either and she is writing up a letter of recommendation for us to return to the states. It should be done by next week. She is supporting us returning to Fort Bragg. So hopefully we will be in the states soon. Guest guest
How old is Abby? I don't know why these people say such drastic things. Of course she can take cough medicine -- and she won't die from it. It must be killing you to watch her be so uncomfortable and (in all likelihood) unable to sleep. Our CF doctor recommends Dimetapp (contrary to the Delsym which I find works best). And we give our child cough medicine all the time (when he has a cold, etc.) You poor baby! Guest guest
Bless you all. I am so sorry you have had this problem. it is best you be where you are sure in your heart that all is being done. It is the mothers feeling inside thing. intuition -maternal ----all that and it is usually right when it comes to her kiddo's. I hope it happens soon for you. How long do you think it will take for you all. Where are you actually living there? Do you have the base furniture and just your personal things or did you take all your stuff over. ? My daughter had most of her stuff here . AND all the stuff we/she brought while there. They did the packing and shipping for them tho , even a car , so it wasn't as bad, She came home quickly. Not her choice , there were problems with some of the locals and many families were allowed to leave. Her hubby was worried (2 babies-9months and 21months old..)He was out in field so much , He was worried about them. Maybe if she had lived on base .They German gangs even blew up a postal truck., threw bottle bombs, etc like that.It wasn't the country as a whole , they were great and worked hard togged to the guilty ones, Curt was just soo worried.... Anyway, she came back with kids and lived with me. That all happened in 3 weeks from his request. They loved GERMANY , as I do .we all are planning on going back there too. the boys are dying to see it as we rave about all the great places we went an dhow beautiful it was. Maybe later , you can take a trip back as the kids are older and things will be better health etc for you all. bless you and have a happy holiday. keep me posted. Guest guest
Karrie I'm a military spouse too. Were your children screened through EFMP before leaving the states? Is the EFMP office any help at all to you and your problems? We have a wonderful case manager here in the states who moves things along when our grandson needs anything at all. I would suggest you make friends with your case manager quickly. I know the military health care system can be a bear to work with, but after a while it can and will work for you. Best advice would be to avoid the ER for all but true emergencies..breathing difficulties, broken bones and such. Try to develop a good relationship with your primary care physician. Sounds like maybe weekly appts are in order for Abby at least for weight checks and to head off any problems as they arise. And keep your own supply of over the counter meds like, Tylenol suppositories for fever and discomfort, decongestant for stuffy noses, saline nose drops for stuffy noses, cough med, and pedialyte and popsicles for times when she doesn't seem to be eating or drinking much. Check with your doctor to see which she would approve for you to use when necessary. I hope your quest for a compassionate reassignment goes quickly...sounds like you could use a break. Any chance you could bring your children back to the states until they can get it done? It's tough being away from home with a sick one and tougher during the holidays keep your chin up..sunnier days are ahead. mj
Guest guest
HI Karrie, I am sorry you are having such a tough time right now with Abby and the military docs. If I am not being too nosy, what branch of the service is your family with? My husband is in the Air National Guard, just activated and deployed. Hope your holidays are peaceful, Take care,

Guest guest
, My husband is in the Army. The only thing I know about the Airforce is that they have better on post housing than we do, lol. But I'm sure I can find out any information if you want to know anything. I'm pretty sure that since he has been activated to active duty you should be able to fall under our insurance, Tricare and be able to go to military medical treatment facilities.
