Guest guest
Hello Has any one in the group had a problem with their child loosing hair due to the diet? Our daughter Amelie seems to be loosing hair , she fiddles with it and it seems to be coming out quite easily. We are very concerned, her recent blood tests came back fine , no vitamin deficiencies etc. She is on Sodium Valporate I'm not suer if that could be the cause. Any ideas Thanks Adam Stone
Guest guest
HiAdam, Depakote caused my son's hair to thin when he was on high levels of it. I think that is the same med as Sodium Valporate, but it has been many years, so I'm not positive. I'm sure someone here will verify. His hair grew right back when he came off depakote. It didn't thin again until his third month of the ketogenic diet. Now we give him 25mg of selenium each day. It seems to help. His hair is still thin, but I think it is not quite as thin as before the selenium. At least it has not gotten worse. I hope you find a solution for your daughter. Guest guest
Adam, Our daughter went through this twice. The first time we gave her extra zinc and biotin. Her hair grew back but it was thin and half of her bangs grew (had a permanent bang line). The second time we gave selenium and it has all grown back, still a little thinner than pre-diet. Several weeks ago I began giving biotin again. Her hair is looking really nice. I am not giving extra zinc because it can cause problems if too much is given. My suggestion is to look on your vitamin bottle and determine how much biotin and selenium Amelie is receiving. Most likely it is low. Then, give the amount needed to give 100% USDA recommended. Our daughter is 9 and I give her 25mcg Selenium and 150mcg biotin. You can also find shampoo's at the health store that contain biotin. Make sure that the shampoo is ph balanced. Guest guest
Ditto to what Rhonda has said - Cammie from this list also gave me much the same info recently on this one, taking bits out of her last email to me on it ..... " other things our team were concerned about supplement wise were selenium (symergystic with zinc and Vit E) and biotin (depakote can also wipe out biotinidase) . They knew all of these were low (zinc biotin and selenium) because her hair was falling out. It was also dull, dry and breaking " The diet is said to work under similar mechanisms to depakote, so when a child is on both, they seem to get like a double whammy of any of these adverse side effects. 's hair looks pretty awful at the mo (he is on a small dep dose with the diet), thin and lifeless - his latest zinc level came back as low, so in his case I think this is the main suspect currently. You also have to be aware btw that blood vitamin tests are not always as accurate as we would like, as just becos the levels show as ok in the blood, it doesn't always neccessarily mean they are 'getitng to where they need to' metabolism wise, if that makes sense? It is def a common theme on here, the hair issue, and if you have a search back through the archives, I think you will find that many of us find the same thing - some kiddies are on depakote as well, some not. Bill uses brazil nuts as a rich source of selenium for example to help in that dept, and there are bound to be other accounts in older messages of what others have tried as well. ----- Original Message ----- From: Rhonda Ackerman Adam, Our daughter went through this twice. Guest guest
It is quite common, mentioned in Dr. Freeman's book on the diet. We added brazil nuts and use the vitamin and mineral supplement from Wholelife in California. It is especially for children on the keto diet and has several needed minerals. Guest guest
Is this common in CD? My daughter has beautiful waist length black hair and she is shedding more than normal and freaking out a little bit. I don't blame her at all! She leaves hair everywhere she goes. She thinks she will be bald soon although there are no bald or thinning spots on her head. We just have so much hair to shed and when it comes out, we really notice! It's pretty normal to leave a trail of hair. Shorter hair is just less obvious. I have hardwood floors and my husband and I both have long hair, so we notice our hairbunnies before our short-haired friends even begin to think about them. That said, if she's losing clumps, she should see her doctor. ygg
Guest guest
I am not sure if it is CD related but I have hashimoto hypothyroidsm and when my levels are not right my hair comes out the way you describe. Can you have her thyroid checked? Zanna wrote: Is this common in CD? My daughter has beautiful waist length black hair and she is shedding more than normal and freaking out a little bit. Guest guest
Her GP checked her thyroid just a few months ago. I didn't think she was losing anymore than in the previous years but she seems to think so. She is a teen so it is a little more dramatic I think. She is feeling better though on gf. I felt bad though. I bought reese's pieces for everyone because they are gf and DD ate a bunch of them. They do have dairy in them and I totally forgot to check that! She reacts to that too. She had been sick the past few days and we couldn't figure out why. Man, did I feel bad when she realized that there is dairy in reese's pieces. Zanna > Is this common in CD? Guest guest
I've been having really bad hair loss. January 2005, my hair was to my shoulders, shiny, and gorgeous. June 2005, I noticed it was shorter (I didn't cut it), dry, and when you'd touch it, a puff of hair would come off. Since then, I've put a strainer in my drain, and each day when I clean it out I have gobs of hair. Your daughter is not alone, and it does get offensive when people and doctors dismiss it as " normal shedding. " We know our bodies and what is normal for us. I just wash my hair every other day now instead of everyday. I try to handle it minimally. My hair is naturally thin and fine, so I can't go a whole week without washing it....gets way too greasy. I found a website last week that had a collection of reported symptoms of CD and hair loss was in this. :-) Cheyenne
Guest guest
Thank you cheyenne. I was just thinking last night that when we ask family members if certain things are normal, and they all say 'oh, yes that's how I feel too, that's normal'. It just dawned on me that it really isn't normal for the general public, just for our family because we all are experiencing the same things. So, for us we just never knew what the 'real norm' was. Guest guest
Are you totally gluten free? Are you taking any medication that could be causing this? After going gluten free my hair loss stopped. Then my TSH was high and my doctor put me on thyroid medication, which I took for about a year and suddenly I was short of breath, having bad diarrhea, and my hair began falling out again. It turned out I no longer needed the medication and after reviewing the adverse reactions of the thyroxin I was taking my hair began to perk up. I was suffering from hyperthroidism. It took about 2 months before I began to feel better and my hair began growing again. Hope this helps Shirley in San Diegogityerchicken wrote: I've been having really bad hair loss. Guest guest
Shirley, Thanks for your response. My daughter has been gluten free/dairy free for almost 8 weeks now. She has been glutened twice and had a reaction to dairy since then. I am only gf for 3 days now as is my husband, son is 1 day! I told her that it may take a little longer for some things to change. I am sure her gp checked her thyroid a couple of months ago when she saw her for her fatigue. I know we talked about that. I will call her gp tomorrow. Guest guest
I had my thyroid checked, too, and it was normal, but I have the hair loss like you describe. It comes out in handfuls, but I don't have any bald spots. It is kind of scary, but I guess it is thinning or something? I am not sure, either, but I felt a little better seeing that someone else was having the same symptom. > > > Is this common in CD? Guest guest
, Here's a link. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000233.htm It's not the same link. I really need to start adding bookmarks instead of pretending I have an awesome memory. :-) This time when I googled " celiac disease and hair loss " I had several results come up. I agree with you. It is comforting to know I'm not alone on the hair loss. :-) Cheyenne
Guest guest
Before my diagnonis, I had hair loss & eyebrow lost. When I went to dermo, she told me I have anemie and never searched for the reason. Now I know that I had anemie due to celiac. After gf diet (since 5 months), I see my eyebrows coming back... Guest guest
My daughter was losing circular patches of hair for years before she was diagnosed. Her hair is down to her waist, and she’d lose a big circular patch, then that area would start growing back and she’d lose another circular patch elsewhere on her head. Since going gluten free two years ago, that symptom has completely disappeared, and her hair is healthier than ever. Jenn
