Hi everyone, just wondering how old everyones child/children were

when they had their first lot of IV's? - and when diagnosed with CF,

were they automatically put on antibiotics as a prevention thing?

has been on 2 x types of medication for about 4 months even

though he has not been sick - is this normal for DR's to do?

Thanks,.

My son was diagnosed at around birth. He is now 5 years old. I also have a

daughter who is 7 but does not have C.F.

My son was on 7 antibiotics within a 6 month period back in 1997. Because of

this he was able to be approved for SSI in 1998.

He has been in good health for a while now. I'm not sure if that has

anything to do with pulling him out of Head Start or what but he hasn't been

sick since before summer. Knock on wood. If you have anyother questions

please don't hesitate to e-mail me. That goes for everyone else. Even if

you just want to chat!!!!

was put on IV antibiotics at birth for aspirating mecomium.

She was on many courses of them in NICU before the CF was diagnosed

at 2 months. When she was diagnosed she was on them for

psuedomonas. She has not been put on antibiotics as a preventative

thing so far.

Hi Meilnda,

sorry to jump in on your conversation, but just read your note. I have also

got a son called and he is 6 months and has CF. Isn't that wired?

Jakes just finnished 2 weeks IV's for psudomonas (think thats how it's

spelt) and has oral antibiotics most of the time. It's quite a lot for a

little bod of 6 mnths to take, don't you agree?

I would not think this is " normal " . Our docs avoid antibiotics, unless

there is an obvious need for them, as they can become immune to them, and

that would not be good, being that there are only so many antibiotucs used

in CF. I would definately question this.

Well, I am very new to pseudomonus. My 3 year old just tested positive a

month ago, and we have been on a month on TOBI. I think that when pseudo.

has been detected, treatment takes a different course. They take this very

seriously, and try to hit it hard. Our docs told us that a study had

recently been done on children under 6 years of age, and with aggresive

treatment of antibiotics, they were able to " eradicate " the pseudo, thus the

large doses of antibiotics for your son - I would have to assume. I would

not be too concerned, just continue to try to " eradicate " that pseudo!

our daughter who was 3mths old when she was diagnosed with pseudomo... she

was in the hospitol for 17 days. The doctors at our cf clinic treated her

very agressively and got rid of the pseudo... I will tell you from personal

experience when your baby cannot breathe and starts to turn blue and you

cant do a thing for her that is very scary. We were glad the doctors were

real agressive with the treatments. The IVs with antibiotics, the steriods

and other shots, oxygen constantly so she wouldnt have to work to hard to

breathe. breathing treatments and chest therapy every 4 hours around the

clock. It seemed like a lot for a 3mth old but she didnt have another

episode where she couldnt breathe. She has been doing very good ever since

they got rid of the pseudmo... however they said once they get it once they

will always have it. the main thing is not to let it get real bad.

good luck S&R 4mthwcf, and 2yrold still waitng to see.

must be a very popular name!

Anyway, my has a cold at the moment, & I am hoping it does not

get any worse. I took him into the hospital the other day and they

said that if it does get worse, they will more than likely start him

on IV's. He has had no need to have IV's yet, so it kinda makes me a

bit nervous. In some ways, I guess it feels like the start of it all??

Another thing why I am hoping he will not get worse is because we

would be in hospital for xmas... his first xmas. so fingers crossed.

How do small babies get pseudomonas?? would it be more than likely

from the hospital? Do the babies that have pseudo have contact with

other CF'ers?

/Kristy - do you know if it is normal practise for Dr (if

you have him) to put the bubs on oral antibiotics as a preventative?

We have been on Cefaclor ( and rulide) for about 4 months now &

doesnt look like he will come off it.

Patti had to have IV's right after her intial diagnosis as she was having a

bad flare up of staph. She was 2 months old at the time. She was not put

on antibiotics as a preventative long term, but if she starts a runny nose,

be it viral or bacterial, then we generally get some. Now that she is older,

I doubt I will call for oral antibiotics as much as she seems to be

handling runny noses quite well on her own.
