1st Admit for I.V. Antibiotics/ really bad timing

Hi,

has been fighting off a pneumonia since the beginning of

November and his FEV1 has been dropping, so, he is being admitted for his

first ever round of I.V. antibiotics this coming Monday.

Any thoughts from those who have been there on how to make it

better/easier for him? He is being admitted to the same hospital I work at

and I know the staff very well. They will treat him like a king ( likely

will spoil him terribly) and have already set aside the nicest ( and

largest) room on the peds floor for him, and told me to let him know that

they expect a good waterfight from him....

I have a list of videos he wants to rent ( there is a VCR in each room)

and he is planning a pizza party with his friends while he is in.

This has hit him pretty hard. He asked if this meant that he was " on

the down-hill slide " now that he has to be admitted. I assured him that it

is definately not a big deal medically although it is a big deal from his

standpoint. We had a very long and very honset discussion about it and he

seems to be doing better with it. Currently he still only grows Staph

Aureous and it is not resisstant to anything but Ampicillian, but, he has

been on oral antibiotics since the beginning of November and his FEV1 is

alot lower than the last CF clinic, so that is the reason for the admit

and the more aggressive treatment.

To make things worse, we just also found out this week that 's

cat ( big attachment!!) is terminally ill and that we need to make a

decision regarding euthanizing it next time it gets really sick. Last

night I came home from work and met me at the door with the cat in

his arms and said " it's time " . So now he is dealing with grieving for his

cat AND facing his first admit. AAAHHHH!!! It has to get better than this

right?!

Thanks for letting me vent a bit. Any suggestions/ideas from those of you

who have been throught the admit/home I.V. thing would be welcome!

Thats great not having IV's until 11. My daughter has had plenty, but our

clinic does it pretty quickly if after 3 weeks on orals they haven't

improved so that no long term damage is done. For my daughter they put her

to sleep so she doesn't know anything. also we know ask for her to be givem

medazilin (sp?) which makes her very relaxed in the room and therefore

doesn't remember going to theatre at all. She now actually thinks its the

medicine that puts her to sleep. Sounds like he has the 'social side'

organised. Hope all goes well.
