Hi everyone

ph has started ketogenic diet this monday. He seems to be

tolerating the diet very well and is eating everything with no

problem. He has not been pooping for 2 days so I gave him glycerin

syppository tonight and he pooped with blood. His stool was also very

hard.I checked his bum for any cracks but have not found anything.I

am concerned about this blood. It seems to come from inside.Has

anybody ever faced the same problem? Any suggestions would be

greatly appraciated.

Natasha,

I'm glad to hear ph's first day went so smoothly. Don't be

too alarmed if he starts feeling bad (sick to his stomach,

lethargic) as the ketones rise and his body adjusts. It seems too

early for the blood to be related to the diet and internal. I

suspect it is from undetected cuts on the outside. We have this

problem occassionaly, even when we can see no sign of inury on the

outside. Just watch it a few days. I'll bet it will go away. Also,

you might start ph on perscription Mirilax. It is not an

addictive type of laxative at all. It dissolves in a glass of water,

so kids don't even know they are taking it. All my doctor friends

swear by it. ph has enough to deal with on this diet, don't let

constipation be one of them! I hope the diet works its miracles

soon for ph!

Hi Gretchen

Thanks for your reply.I think you are right and it could be from

undetected cuts.I am very reluctant to add more meds but I'll keep

in mind your suggestion.I calculated oat bran im meals today,so

ph will be getting some fiber, hopefully it will help.

That's right, fissures from constipation can be where you can't see them

without a proper Drs internal exam, and more often than not it is a small amount

of blood coming from them responsible for looking like there is blood actually

'in' the stool. This we know from having lab samples done to check 's

(internal fissures a charming throwback from early on in the diet before we

started him on cal/mag) - can't remember the technical terms, but the one where

the blood is actually 'mixed' inside the stools (lab analysis needed to confirm)

is the one to worry about - means blood might be coming from inside the gut, if

on the 'outside', more often than not from a small cut or tear.

Constipation is very common on the diet. He may have a small tear inside

from pushing. Try giving the maximum allowable fluid intake, give

regular magnesium supplement (we use milk of magnesia), add as much

fibre as possible with the allowable vegetables and the free lettuce

leaf if allowed. We had luck with ground psyllium husks that I don't

calculate in as I believe that it is not digested. On the diet there is

so little volume that going every 3 to 4 days is normal in some children.

Thanks and Bill

ph's next poop was OK ,I think I just panic too much !

Bill,I have psyllium husks at home but I've never gave it to ph

as I though you have to mix it with water and drink.Jospeh would not

drink something like that.I also have oat bran and I sprinkle it

over his food ( calculate in diet ) and it seems to help. Can I

sprinkle psyllium husks over food?

I sprinkle it in the cheesecake (fritata) and sprinkle some water on it

and give adequate water with the meal. You are right. It absorbs water.

Oat bran is a good idea!
