Guest guest
In addition to everything else -the most important thing to check out is the peroxide level of the fish oil which will show the rancidity/amount of oxygen the fish oil was exposed to. Fish oil (as we all know) is very unstable in oxygen -it stinks pretty quick. It's clear that mercury is not a problem in any fish oils since the mercury binds to the protein (or muscle) of the fish, not that 3rd person testing is a bad idea for that anyway -but oxygen is the number one fish oil problem since from what I've been told most OTC fish oils are rancid to some degree out there. Not all are tested for peroxide levels -but you want one that does test for it and has low levels of it. Nordic Naturals does have very low peroxide levels and you can also tell because their fish oils don't smell like rancid fish (nor taste like that) and best for those adults that take them too...they don't make you burp like the rancid ones do (yuck!) So far for me the NN ones are the only ones I found to not have that effect. If someone wants to try out the Wal-Mart one on their family let us know! Anyway -one other thing to check for! (stinkiness) " Fish oil quality standards do not exist in the United States. To ensure on going quality, Nordic Naturals adheres to and exceeds the stringent Norwegian Medicinal Standard (NMS) and the European Pharmacopoeia Standard (EPS) for all products. These standards guarantee quality products by setting maximum allowances on peroxides, heavy metals, dioxins, furans, and PCBs.: http://www.npicenter.com/anm/templates/newsATemp.aspx?articleid=14526 & zoneid=22 =====
Guest guest
A further comment for folks looking to save money - the general fish oil supplements at places like Walmart don't have the Omega 6 that seems to matter to our kids, so this is not a substitute for ProEFA. But if you are not using ProEFA currently, or are supplementing with borage oil seperately, the cheapest place to get fish oil pills is supposed to be Costco and Sams Club. When Consumer Reports tested a few years ago, the wholesale club products were substantially cheaper than elsewhere, including Walmart. And to the original poster, CR tested the Spring Valley supplements as well, and they were fine. > > > > has anyone ever tried giving their children, or taking themselves, the > > Walmart brand fish oils which is Spring Valley? i saw it today and > > thought about buying it, but wasn't sure i could trust it. i did read > > on the bottle that they have been purified of any PCB's and other > > heavy metals, just like it claims on the Nordic Naturals which is what > > i buy now. but the Walmart brand was obviously A LOT cheaper. > > > > I don't know what the ratios of EFAs/EPA is in the Walmart brand, but > according to this site at least, they should certainly be safe: > > http://www.oceansalive.org/eat.cfm?subnav=fishoil & sort=Company > > Fom another site, it appears to be made for them by Nature's Bounty. > > Sue >
Guest guest
Hi, just to add my 2 cents. I give my son 6 ProEFAs a day - 3 in a.m. and 3 in p.m. and I quit for about two weeks for some reason - can't remember why - and he actually regressed in speech. But before this regression, I had started substituting one capsule with another brand both in the a.m. and p.m. I could not tell that this made a difference in his speech, but what I did notice was the smell. His head was very fishy smelling, so I stopped giving him the Nature Made brand - I think it was and started back giving him only ProEFA and the smell has left. So I think I'll stay with the ProEFAs Nordic Natural brand. It has really helped my son. Hope this helps. Phyllis
Guest guest
Oh my gosh, you just jogged my memory! I wanted to post about this but forgot all about it. My younger daughter (24 months, NT) has been on one Omega 3-6-9 for over 6 months now. On Friday I upped her dose from 1 capsule to 3. A few hours later, she smelled HORRIBLY of fish. My SIL's wedding rehearsal dinner was that night and it was seriously really embarrassing how bad she smelled. It actually made me gag a little! Confirmed by 3 or 4 people who didn't even know I gave the girls fish oils. I know that people have posted about this before, but honestly I can't remember what the final verdict was, and I can't figure out the archive search. The oils shouldn't have been rancid or anything - everything was same as usual except the dose. My other daughter took 6 on the same day and had no smelly problems. Any ideas? Guest guest
Just curious, why haven't you tried adding EPA? Did you see any side effects to the EPA? Guest guest
Kerri this has come up about four or five times now since this group has started, but to date nobody has confirmed the trimethylaminuria diagnosis. (probably it's all just messy kids!) This was the most recent from from 2004 - can you update us? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~start of archive Re: a fishy smell...to Hi , Yes, if I was positive it wasn't just that my son smelled fishy due to him wiping his mouth with his hand after being given fish oil - which is oily of course -and then wiping his hand on his body, clothes and through his hair, which would then all stink and in the case of clothes would not come out that easy -I would stop the oils right away until I had the test for TRIMETHYLAMINURIA done by my son's pediatrician. TRIMETHYLAMINURIA is an extremely rare diagnosis -and in the few times this subject came up here thus far the parents found the fishy smell was due to the oils getting on the child from an outside source -not an inside one. In the meantime you could try flax seed oil, until you find out more. In addition to fish oil however -you are supposed to avoid all the foods that would create the smell as it reads here: " Cheer up, Hal--I am almost certain the problem is something you eat. If that's right, the smell will go away as soon as you stop eating those foods. To find out, your doctor should test you for trimethylaminuria, which is a long way to say that when you eat fish, eggs, liver, kidney, or soybeans, your body does not digest these things quite the way other bodies do. These foods have a chemical called choline (say it like KO-leen), which germs in the gut digest into trimeth- ylamines (just call them TMA). TMA smells fishy--very fishy, in fact. For most people that fishy smell doesn't matter because their body turns TMA into something else, TMA oxide, which does not smell at all. But in people with trimethylaminuria, their bodies cannot change the TMA. So the TMA comes out in their sweat, urine, and breath, and no matter how much these people scrub, the TMA makes them smelly. Having this problem does not make people sick in any way, but it certainly is embarrassing. You say that sometimes the fishy smell goes away, which makes me think that if you stay away from foods with choline, you'll be fine. The worst foods for you would be fish, eggs, liver, and kidney. Avoid them. If that's not enough, then you should also stay away from soybeans, peas, and mayonnaise. (Think of that--a doctor's excuse not to eat liver and tofu!) Eggs, soybeans, and mayonnaise can be hard to avoid, because they are part of many packaged foods. At first, you'll have to think a lot about things like whether a Big Mac has mayonnaise (it does). You and your family will have to read the labels on packages very carefully. But you'll soon learn what you can and cannot eat. This diet is a pain, there's no doubt about that. But it's much less of a pain than smelling like rotten fish. " http://www.jhu.edu/~jhumag/496web/derzebra.html Please do keep us posted. We hope you have just another messy kid! =====
Guest guest
Not sure if this is at all related, but with ph's last regression using an older bottle of EFA liquid that had traveled a bit unrefridgerated, top left off - ie we had gotten rather careless with it - ph's mouth/breath really started to smell foul...which it hadn't before on fishoil. The loss of words, clarity and then finally coordination occurred over a peroid of 2 weeks. Once we switched to a fresh bottle, ph improved again over a week. In the end we concluded that the oil had gone a bit rancid, and he was therefore not benefiting from it. We now travel with the pills and puncture them & squeeze the oil out. I have heard that some omegas on the market may be a bit oxidized. We use nordic naturals because I have felt confident that they have high standards for purity etc. Many of the off the counter brands may very well be fine. I just haven't had the time or energy to look into their quality control, so stick with what I know is good and orking. - Re: [ ] Re: Walmart's Spring Valley brand of fish oils?? Guest guest
I am going to start adding EPA - next month. We just started the Gluten free diet this week and I didn't want to introduce any new items in his diet, so I could see if Gluten was actually harming him. After this trial period, I plan to add EPA. I have read most of the posts and agree that may be helpful to him, because the EFAs work fantastic. I wish others could get the same results. Thanks, Phyllis Hi, just to add my 2 cents.
