Guest guest
Hi everyone, My daughter (diagnosed in Jan and GF since then), age 13, woke up 3 days ago with a rash on her abdomen....bright red small bumps...covering almost all of her lower stomach down to her upper thighs...also various spots on arms, shoulders. I gave her Benadryl liquid (can someone confirm that is GF?????). Next day, abdomen was better, but more rash all over her knees and elbows...then next day, spread to eyelids, ears, back and hands. Her hands " burn " her and her whole body itches. She is a non-reactor so we never have GI symptoms (she was dx'ed due to failure to grow). How can I tell if she was gluttened? How should I treat her? What kind of doctor can I take her to to confirm that it was a gluttenning and not just a regular old rash (allergic to something else non GF related?) Any similar experiences out there? THanks so much in advance, Eileen
Guest guest
Hi, I would look for a diagnosis from a doctor not from this list. Do not confuse having celiac disease with an allergy reaction. fran Help...rash??? Guest guest
I'd check with a doctor. Rashes can come from other things besides allergies, etc. I once had a rash like you describe that was at first attributed to a reaction to an antibiotic, but it turned out that it was mononucleosis. An internist at an urgent care finallydiagnosed me correctly. Benadryl helped my itching, as did cool water. Hot or warm water made it worse. We were camping on vacation at the time, and swimming in the bay in the panhandle of FL. I also had a fever with it. Hope your daughter feels better. Help...rash??? Guest guest
As someone with DH (and other allergies) I would highly encourage you to seek a doctors advice. While many outbreaks can be associated with CD it can also be the same thing in disguise as a different allergy (say milk for example). The bad part about CD is we assume everything we react to is gluten, when that might not be the case. However, by removing gluten from our diets we find that there are other things we need to elimate as well - some may say " oh my another allergy! " or someone may say " finally, now I know what else to avoid " . I like the later...find out what else your child needs to avoid. > > Hi everyone, > My daughter (diagnosed in Jan and GF since then), age > 13, woke up 3 days ago with a rash on her > abdomen....bright red small bumps...covering almost > all of her lower stomach down to her upper > thighs...also various spots on arms, shoulders. Guest guest
Thanks , Your advice is consistent with other's responses....and I think a good plan. So I will follow up and see what I can find out. Guest guest
, Thanks for your thoughts...after reading other's responses I've decided to go to a doctor and see if we can figure out what she might be reacting to. Guest guest
Fran, Your reaction is similar to other's as well...thanks for the feedback. Guest guest
Re: Help...rash??? Posted by: "Eileen Goldman" eileenrgoldman@... eileenrgoldman Date: Sat Aug 5, 2006 8:56 pm (PDT) No one else mentioned this, although allergies were mentioned. But...did you recently change laundry detergent? That is HUGE for my family. We HAVE to use the same detergent. If not that, what about body soap or shampoo? Has something like THAT changed in the last few days..or on clothes she just started wearing? sometimes wearing new clothes with the sizing still on it can cause it. I know it does for me...I used to work in retail (clothes, when young) and OFTEN broke out, just FOLDING them! I would also get a mild sneezing, stuffy nose, itchy eyes thing *sometimes* with the new clothing. Low and behold, I realized this as a HS student and never worked with clothing again. Perhaps your daughters issues are something similar (new room spray?) Happy hunting,
Guest guest
I'm glad you decided to go to the doctor. This sounds a lot like what happened with my daughter (gf for 2+ years and who does get small DH spots so I know the drill there) last spring. Even though she was otherwise asymptomatic (no fever, no sore throat, etc.) turns out it was scarlet fever. (Surprised the doctor!) > > Hi everyone, > My daughter (diagnosed in Jan and GF since then), age > 13, woke up 3 days ago with a rash on her > abdomen....bright red small bumps...covering almost > all of her lower stomach down to her upper > thighs...also various spots on arms, shoulders. When she is glutened, she has DH only on her inner arm creases, backs of her legs, wrists, and lower face area. She does have an IgA allergy to both foods, but seems to react differently to both. I would definitely try to determine what caused her reaction, as this could cause a serious medical emergency in the future. You might consider getting an epipen to keep on hand.
