Guest guest
Hi, has been on the diet for 2 1/2yrs and recently had trouble with his kidneys and his liver function. In addition to osteoporosis. This week I have done more of a Adkins version for him. I cut back on the fat and given a little more carbs and protein. Seizures have actually improved. I really though it was going to hit the fan! Maybe his liver is happier with less fat? I am going to keep trying this as long as seizure don't get worse. He is of course happier too. Anyone else have similiar luck? Thanks Bobbi
Guest guest
Hi Bobbi, My son Broc just started the Keto diet last week. While we were at Hopkins I asked about the Atkins diet and I was told that they have had the best luck using 10 grams of carbs per day versus the 20 grams that Atkins suggests. Guest guest
Hi Mike Are these NET carbs or total carbs? Thank-you We have been trying aKeto/Atkins version diet--higher fat My daughter SEEMS fine, happier, and doing good in school--yet her EEG is worse than ever I believe in treating clinically--except the docs are concerned with the EEG results Of course it will be repeated to see if that was an off day for her Please tell me more about how you are doing the Atkins diet for seizure control--our Neuro is very interested in this approach--but has never tried it, other than for our daughter using a combo of Atkins/Keto Thank-you How is Broc? Best to you Sandi Mom to Zara (10 yrs old)
Guest guest
Hi Sandii, Sorry but I am not sure if it is net carbs or total carbs. Broc is on the Ketogenic Diet and not the Atkins Diet but when they brought up the Atkins when we were at Hopkins last week I wrote down the numbers that I gave you because I had seen a lot of discussion about this prior to us leaving and thought it may interest some people. Broc has only been on the diet for a week but so far so good. Mike _____ From: SJVC5@... Guest guest
My son is in the Atkins Diet Research Program at Hopkins. Since there is already a very high volume of messages on this board I opened a new yahoo group to support parents/caregivers and individuals who are using this modified version of Atkins to gain seizure control. Anyone interested is welcome to join and discuss how we are applying the diet etc. there at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/atkins4seizures Thanks, M > > Hi, > has been on the diet for 2 1/2yrs and recently had trouble with his kidneys and his liver function. Guest guest
Mike, We are seeing Dr. Kossoff. He is a very nice man however like most Neurologists he assumes you know nothing and he did not give me clear answers to all of my questions - but it was probably partly my fault for getting side tracked and distracted by my sons behavior. On the flip side I like his manner and attitude. He has gotten back to me immediately with questions and has been extremely acessible...never had that in a Neuro before. Are you doing Keto or the Atkins program...if you are doing Keto, I think I saw some of your posts on the Disney Message Boards. Did you take your trip to Disney World yet ? If so how did it work out. We are thinking of going in September and I am concerned about working the diet in a new situation.
Guest guest
Hi , We are doing the Keto. It was me that posted on the DIS about a future trip to Walt Disney World. We are going in October and based on what I know now I don't see any problems with it. The one advantage that we have is that Broc is still eating a lot of baby foods which will be very easy to pack. I will try and post a report when I return. Mike _____ From: M. Guest guest
We are doing Atkins following Keto. It seems to continue to give me some assurance but I don't know if it is providing anything more. We go to Disneyland and explain our daughter's situation. We then take the premeasured, packed on ice meals to the nurses office and get the food when we all eat. They are very accommodating. Given that the stamina of our children is low, you might consider asking for a special needs access pass.
