Guest guest
My son while in EI had speech 2x a week for an hour duration...and OT once a week. At school and privately..he receives ST 3x individual and 1x with group...OT 2x individual and 1x with a group. " Golden " <goldenbryant@... < > t> cc: Sent by: Subject: [ ] Frequency of SLP visits in EI? @yaho ogroups.com 11/01/2006 04:05 PM Please respond to My 24 month old sees a SLP once a week. After all I have been reading here and researching in other places, it seems that 3-4x week, 30 minutes at a time is ideal for apraxia. I called the EI director today to ask about this and she said that is a " medical model " or a " clinical model " - not an EI model. Huh? I'm assuming she is saying that the model EI using with home visits to work with the child in a natural environment doesn't mesh with going to a clinic for half hour visits. I can't imagine EI doing home visits 3 times a week for a half hour. Does anyone out there who gets EI services get services that frequently in home or somewhere else? If we did go seek services privately, can someone tell me how much to expect per visit? And also, I am still looking for resources in Massachusetts. So far only one person replied. Any other MA families out accessing private therapies? Thanks in advance, Golden
Guest guest
Our speech therpaist has only been coming once a week and fighting to keep it that way. I have told her numerous times that if I had a choice between and licensed therapist or a parent working with her I would choose the therapist, she doesn't understand this. Right now we have our Primary Care doctor and Neurologist trying to keep it at 2 x's per week, now that my daughter is starting to talk, the doctor is trying to push it up to 3 x's per week. (In our therapists defence she only works with our EI department Part Time so she doesn't have a lot of flexibility or extra time for 3 to 4 times a week. She is the only Speech therapist in our area). Anyway what I can get from the therapist is that it depends on what the child is doing. For the longest time our daughter was completely non verbal. I think once the child starts showing a variety of sounds the therapy should be increased to 3 to 4 times/week. > > My 24 month old sees a SLP once a week. Guest guest
It is difficult of recent to get services approved for more than 1x/week through EI. I have been able to get 2x/week, but it is not as easy as it used to be. They focus on helping the parent help the child which is great, but unfortunately kiddos with apraxia benefit from more intensive services. The cost of private services varies dramatically and will depend on the area you live in too. Private therapists range about $85-105 an hour where I live and the rate is usually different depending on whether they are in the home or at an office. The outpatient clinics associated with hospitals here charge over $200 an hour. If you are not finding resources here for your state, you might try to find some help through the state's speech language and hearing association. You could use a search engine and type in your state and speech language and hearing association. Katina > > My 24 month old sees a SLP once a week. Guest guest
Hi Golden, I am in New York, and my DD Jackie aged out of EI in August, but she was recieving services through EI for almost 2 years. At one point we were up to 30 mins 5 times per week. I dont know what state you are in, but in my case when I did not get what I wanted I switched agencies, got a new service coordinator and went from there. I had no problem getting her services increased. I went into it thinking I would have to fight for it, but I really had no problem. If the delay is great enough, and especially if your child is apraxic, then the shorter more frequent therapy has proven benefical. Hope this helps. Trish > > My 24 month old sees a SLP once a week. Guest guest
" I can't imagine EI doing home visits 3 times a week for a half hour .... Does anyone out there who gets EI services get services that frequently in home or somewhere else? " Golden- gets 4 x 30 speech and 2 x 30 OT, all delivered at home. Although has transitioned to school services now, her EI services were exactly the same, all delivered at home. So, clearly, in our state/county (New York State / Monroe County) at least, this *IS* an EI model. I hope that helps some. _____________________ Warmly, Oakes-Hauf Mom to , 3.5 (verbal apraxia) and 1.3 (and babbling away!) Golden wrote: > > My 24 month old sees a SLP once a week. Guest guest
Braden gets speech therapy 2x a week, OT once a week, and developmental therapy once a week all in my house. He also attends a feeding group once a week out of the house. I have been very happy with EI services. The also purchased Boardmaker software and a neoprene vest. -Kristeen

Guest guest
My daughter recieved Speech 3x/week x 30 minutes from EI from about 15 months of age until she started school. She also had PT 3x/week, and OT 2x/week. All of these sessions were at home. We are in NY, which is a great state for services. " K.
