Guest guest
Does anyone know of any good children's books about D/HOH children? I'd love to find one to read to my 3 year old, that has a story line about a D/HOH child. I'm thinking along the lines of a title like " My sister is hard of hearing...but can dance! " or " I can talk with my hands " or something like that. I think " fictional " books like this would be perfect to explain to him that his sister is just like everyone else...but can't seem to find any. Maybe I should write one.... Guest guest
There is a series of books about a boy named Moses who is deaf and does sign language. One of them is " Moses goes to the Circus. Guest guest
Moses Goes to the Symphony. it isn't a book but its a story in a Houghton - Mifflin (spelling) literature book for second grade. Its about a boy who is deaf who goes with his class to see a symphony. It explains how he hears it through the vibrations and the whole class brings balloons to feel the vibrations and stuff. I don't think it is exactly what you are looking for but I hear its a great story. I find that books for deaf/HOH children is seriously lacking. i tried to find sign books and all they have are the same old mother goose stories. taykoz44 taykoz44@...> wrote: Does anyone know of any good children's books about D/HOH children? Guest guest
I wonder if one of the hearing aid manufacturer companies puts out anything - my son just got his first Oticon aids and they came with a cute book called Having Hearing Aids - so it isn't really what you are looking for (sorry), but is along the right lines. It was written by a young boy who got hearing aids & talks about the whole process with lots of hand-drawn pictures (look like a child's crayon pictures). It even goes into getting an FM system in school & taking care of the aids. We are so new to this I have no idea if all of the manufacturers provide something like this, but I was surprised so I thought I'd share. (They also give you the Oticon doll that has hearing aids - I thought that was a nice touch. Now if we could have only get all of this a week or two prior to getting the aids I could prepped better.) Guest guest
Sara, there is a really sweet book about a deaf boy who goes out with his dad before the sun comes up. I just remember it being so incredibly sweet. Don't remember the title or the author though. I do remember the name of another one, which is Gets Hearing Aids by Maureen Riski. It's very cute. Maggie had a huge poster in her room for about 5 years.

Guest guest
Amy, When my kids were little, I often adapted books to fit what was going on in our lives. For example, I " read " that some siblings in a story were adopted or a family was moving to a foreign country. Once I started, I always read the story the same way. I had noticed that any story with an adopted sibling was always about adoption, and sometimes I just wanted the story to reflect our family's composition, without that being the main point. My kids loved these stories, I felt that it made them seem average, which is what they wanted. If I had known about my son's HL at that point, I probably would have casually mentioned that some of the characters in the stories had one. Maybe you could do this before you have tiem to write your story. Childrens Books Does anyone know of any good children's books about D/HOH children? Also there's an old book called A Button in Her Ear, but the hearing aids they show are old fashioned, they are attached to some type of harness and kids don't need to wear that anymore. Sorry if someone already mentioned that title, I'm running out the door and didn't look at the whole thread. Cheryl

Guest guest
I'm so glad you gave me the title - its such a sweet book I want to get it for my brother and his son! Guest guest
> > Does anyone know of any good children's books about D/HOH children? > We took a great book out of our local library called " Elana's Ears " - it's a story about a dog who " tells " his " parents " that their new baby can't hear him barking. It follows them through diagnosis, and getting hearing aids. It has a great story and really cute pictures. My two older daughters loved it, my son was too young to really understand it at the time, but liked listening along anyway. - mom of Miri - 7 1/2 - hearing Abigail - 5 - hearing - 2 1/2 - mild/moderate SNHL
Guest guest
There is a whole series of Moses books. We've borrowed a couple from our library. If I remember, they show some sign language and are about a boy who is deaf names Moses and his deaf/hoh class. At one time I had a list of a few hard of hearing/deaf books for kids, but I can't locate it now. (I'm sure I saved it under something that would make sense to me...but now doesn't) I do remember there are not a lot out there. There was one called " I'm the Boss of my Hearing Loss " that sounded pretty good. Try this link http://www.harriscomm.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=35_101 They have a few books, you just have to weed through the other stuff. If the link doesn't work, go to harriscomm.com, then books, then children's products. Good Luck, Debbie, mom to , 7, moderate SNHL and , 3, hearing Some men see things as they are and ask why. I need to do a serious update to the bookstore pages (it's surprising how fast some of these books go out of print), but you'll find some listed here, as well as an explanation of what the book's about, ISBN, and a link to the book on Amazon. At the bottom of each page is a link to bookfinder for the out of print ones - I find that less expensive in most cases than getting them from the Amazon re-sellers. http://www.listen-up.org/h_books/kids.htm There are a few online books. About halfway down on this page http://www.listen-up.org/haid/hear-aid.htm#ha you'll find a listing for Stories for Children About Hearing Loss with links to 3 under that.
