Guest guest
Hi all , just a quick question, has caught a cold, well at least thats what we think it is, I am taking him to the ped tomorrow, so I went ahead and called the cf clinic to let them know has cough, the nurse said that they want to talk about putting him on a nebulizer that it would help open his airways, ok I am freaked what is this? Is it bad? she said it would help the asthma too.Need all info available and what to expect, we go to clinic on nov 21 and I want to be prepared, are there any pros verses cons, thanks for all your insights.........kelly
Guest guest
A nebulizer is not a big deal. Where we go to clinic (and the previous place we went as well), I think it is standard practice for every child with CF to be on a nebulizer. It's really the best method to dispense drugs directly to the drugs. What is really more important is what type of medication is on while using the nebulizer. Many of the medications mentioned frequently on this list are dispensed via a nebulizer. My daughter has been on a nebulizer with albuterol and cromolyn sodium since birth. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Don't panic! A nebulizer is not a big deal! All it is is an air compressor machine that tubing can be connected to, the tubing connects to a little neb cup with medicine in it (like albuterol, which helps open airways.) The medicine is turned into a mist from the compressed air so that the child can breath in the medicine and it goes right to the lungs, where it's needed. Most aerosolized meds have fewer side effects and can be used in lower dosages than oral meds (because they don't have to pass through lots of systems on their way to the lungs, they just go straight to the lungs to work.) You've seen these nebulizers before, probably on t.v. People with asthma often use them instead of the little inhalers. This is very common in cf treatment. Levi got his nebulizer when he was a baby. It's really standard treatment in cf. I know it's stressful because it's another piece of medical equipment, but it's honestly no biggie! Nebs can be given to kids while they sleep. They are just breathing the medicated mist in, that's all. It's not invasive or anything. ~ > Hi all , just a quick question, has caught a cold, well at > least thats what we think it is, I am taking him to the ped tomorrow, > so I went ahead and called the cf clinic to let them know has > cough, the nurse said that they want to talk about putting him on a > nebulizer that it would help open his airways, ok I am freaked what > is this? Guest guest
Hey there, a nebulizer becomes a fixture in a CF household. In Fact.....most kdis are put on it from diagnosis as a preventative thing. It is no big deal, albeit time consuming..and needing one does not signify a bad thing at all....... hang in there. Guest guest
I think the first time you use/do anything it is scary. Try to make it pleasant for your child. Put on a favorite tape, read a book, etc. try to make it a positive experience so that they won't FIGHT you the next time. Good Luck. Guest guest
A nebulizer is a GOOD THING. My son is almost three and has been on a nebulizer since day one - by choice. The doctors say he does not really need it, but my sister is 25 and has been very healthy. She was given one or two treatments a day until her teens. I truly believe it helped keep her healthy, and this is proving true for my son. We just use albuterol and saline once a day followed by chest pulmonary thereapy, and he's been healthy as a horse. I think it helps too, when they do get sick ,a nd need the nebulizer, that there is no fight, because he's used to it. Don't be afraid of this machine - it's a piece of cake and a GOOD THING! Guest guest
Rosemary, We are back on the nebulizer and my youngest has been wanting to do it because when she first started to do the nebulizer my way of keeping her occupied was to watch the birds out the window. I would tell her that the birds wanted to come over close to see this girls with this funny think on her face and she would laugh but you know it is a memory she loved and I think it has made the nebulizer a fun think in her mind because her and mom get to have some fun time together.
