Guest guest
Hi Jodi, Glad to know I'm not alone. My husband and I too are not having any success with LC this time -- in fact, I have put on weight. I have lost weight on Atkins and Protein Power approaches before -- but this time, I am actually gaining. Low fat doesn't work either. I am on HRT - supposedly the 'human kind' . Doctor measured my hormones and found my estrogen levels 'undetectable'- so figured some hormones might be in order. I am 52 years old. Suffer from extreme vaginal dryness without them -- not just a question of low libido and uncomfortable sex, but discomfort al the time. Take lots of vitamins and supplements that are supposed to help with fat metabolism and menopause. Exercise and do yoga too. HELP! Guest guest
Jodi, How about you post some menus for us to see *exactly* what you're eating. Every single thing, including amounts. Have you been sick with a cold or allergies? Based on the fact that you gained an inch in your waist, I'd almost be willing to bet that you're intolerant to a food that you eat a LOT of. Or maybe you have candida. (If so, then you can still do low-carb, but there are additional foods tha tyou have to cut out to get rid of the yeast overgrowth.) Are you drinking anything other than water? Do you drink pop or caffeinated beverages? Is it getting close to your TOM or perhaps ovulation? There are so many possibilities here, but I agree 100% with Vered. We need to see what you're eating. Look forward to hearing from ya, hon. -- in Indy (262.5)253.5/217/150 3/26/
Guest guest
For the most part, things look ok, but here are a few suggestions. 1) Could your sausage or bacon have preservatives (nitrates or nitrites) or sugar in it? This can be a REAL problem for some people. Plus, all the salt can make you retain water. 2) It kinda looks like your fat intake is too low and your protein intake is too high. Have you ever used fitday? You might want to think about that. Most people tend to lose best when they're daily calories contain around 65%-70% of calories from fat. Fat really does help you lose. 3) I hate to say this (especially 'cause they're so good), but the Carbolite bars could be causing your problems. The sugar alcohol in them can be wicked to some people! If you were going to cut something out, that'd be the first thing I'd try. Take some measurements, weigh, and then cut it out for a week and repeat. (A week SHOULD be long enough for you to tell if it was the bars.) 4) As I suggested in a previous post, is it possible that you have candida? If so, that could contribute to you having trouble. 5) You didn't list how much water you drink. You are drinking water, right? How much? These are just a few ideas. Maybe some other people will have some other suggestions or questions for you. -- in Indy (262.5)253.5/217/150 3/26/
Guest guest
Jodi: I wondered that, too. Have you looked into the Eat Right 4 Your Type diet? Blood Type O (which I am) is better suited for Atkins/high protein. If you are a Type A, you are better suited for a vegetarian diet! Read the book..... Some people are REALLY sensitive to those things, while other can live off the stuff and drop weight like nobody's business! > I signed up for fitday last thursday, but didn't get a > chance to get into it because I was getting dogs ready for > shows and we left Fri morning. (Heck, it IS tedious at first.) But once you get the hang of it, it goes VERY quickly, especially if you've entered the custom foods that you eat often. I saw the " 16 dogs " thing in your earlier post. What kind of dogs do you show? I love dogs! I've only got 3 though; in a small townhome, there isn't room for much else. > We were using the Pure De-Lite bars, but hidden carbs showed > it had 9 carbs instead of the 3 the label states. We > switched to Carbolite Bars. While on the road, I did have > probably 2 a day but usually I don't eat them. My husband > is the sweet eater and he does great on them.....obviously! There are lots of hidden carbs in the Carbolite bars too. Just goes to show you how one person can do fine with something and another person REALLY has problems. I, for one, can eat the low-carb protein bars and still lose weight. Others on the list can't even breathe in the smell of a protein bar without stalling. So much about this WOE is TRULY a YMMV thing. > What exactly is candida and can I still do the LC diet? I > don't have the book in front on me right now but I can look > it up later, but sometimes explanations from somebody who > can explain it in laymans terms is better anyway. Candida is a yeast overgrowth in the body. Most women think that you have to have a vaginal yeast infection to have candida, but that isn't necessarily so although a yeast infection can be a sign that you have it. I'm gonna have to dig up the good candida link. You can give it a look and see if it sounds like you. And yes, you can certainly still do LC. In fact, a more restricted version of Atkins is the treatment for it (along with some meds if it's REALLY bad). My mother-in-law had a horrible case of candida! Usually, the candida diet means that you take Atkins and then eliminate all dairy, vinegar (and vinegar-containing products), alcohol, mushrooms, and seeds, nuts, dried herbs, and teas that could contain fungus. Once you've gotten the little yeasties at bay, you can add back some of the foods you had to eliminate (like dairy), but usually you have to REALLY stay away from muchrooms and aged/dried foods. > I drink a lot of water........almost nothing but water! at > least a gallon to a gallon and a half a day...sometimes > more! Good for you! So often, water is the problem. I'll bet you'd be having even worse trouble if you weren't so good with the water. > I am going to try these suggestions and see what happens > next week. I weigh and measure on Wednesday, so will see > what the results are. Thanks! Ya'll are great!! We'll help ya get it figured out, hon. There are some other ladies on the list who have personal experience with Atkins after menapause, and I'm hoping one of them might chime in, 'cause I don't know much about that sort of thing. All I know is what I saw on Discovery Health; low-carb is GREAT for post-menapausal women. (Yes, there was actually something on TV that said LC was good!) Hope this helps! -- in Indy (262.5)253.5/217/150 3/26/

Guest guest
Jodi, On the surface your menu doesn't look too bad, but there may be room for improvement. First, do you actively count each and every carb, including the hidden carbs, that you eat? If so are you staying below 20 a day. If you aren't counting the carbs closely, this would be my first recommendation. Something like http://www.fitday.com might help you count them. Another suggestion is that maybe you do need to cut back slightly on the amount that you are eating. True, this is a qualitative, not quantitative eating plan, but some people do need to watch their amounts. The turtle menus at the link below might help with some planning. Also you have to watch the casseroles from menus posted to the list. Some of them have carb counts listed, others do not. Some people are very good about checking the carb counts for menus they post against the USDA database, others are not. Just because something is posted to a LC list does not necessarily mean the carbs have been accurately checked. Also a lot of recipes may be okay for maintenance, when you are no longer trying to lose weight, but not good for induction. Considering the fact that you have been doing this for nearly a month and have gained a pound, my guess is that you are getting more carbs than you think you have. These casseroles and the faux potatoes should probably wait until you are closer to goal. Two cups of faux potatoes actually would have a fairly high carb count, at least the way I make them. LOL I assume that you are making the frozen custard cups with artificially sweetened, homemade whipped cream. Many people see that we can have whipped cream and think cool whip or redi-whip is okay and it is loaded with sugar. I would guess that you already knew this, but it never hurts to ask. I would cut out the carbolite bars until you have been losing steadily for awhile. The pork skins could be causing you to retain water, and finally some people really have to limit the amount of cheese that they eat. Other possible problems could come from medicines that you might be taking, yeast problems, nitrates in the bacon, additives to the sausage, etc. Did you lose at all during induction and then gain it back, or have you just not lost at all since starting? To get you off on the right track, I would suggest sticking with some basic foods for a week and see what happens. No carbolite bars, no casseroles, and no faux potatoes. BTW, I have a food allergy to broccoli and cauliflower that causes me to gain when I eat them. I also get really bloated feeling and have a rock hard gut (as Kirstie would call it). So you have to watch for reactions to certain foods. Once you start losing, then you can start SLOWLY adding other things in and see if it throws you. I just think it is a combination of maybe too much food over all and more carbs than you think. Of course, sometimes my opinion isn't work 2 cents, even with inflation. Guest guest
Jodi, If you do have Candida, you will need to cut out anything fermented (that means no hard cheeses), on LC you have already gotten rid of most other stuff you have to get rid of like yeast breads and sugar. LC is really the only way to deal with Candida and you can pretty much know that you are infected because when you go on LC you feel like a whole new person. Aches and pains go away, and you have energy, even in the mornings...does any of that sound familiar??? It sounds like you need to stick with it. Some people just lose real slow. Your general daily menu sounds fine, but maybe you should each day log EVERYTHING you eat on this list (one day at a time!)And fitday is a godsend. Sometimes we don't realize that we are eating something that might be a problem because we think it's legal. Even some legal stuff doesn't work well with everyone. BTW 16 dogs??????? Even I haven't had that many at one time and I do rescue! Sydne

Guest guest
Jodi, Candida is a yeast problem and can interfere with weight loss. Actually LC dieting is one of the best ways to cure candida, but if it is a problem for you, it may require a yeast fighting supplement to get rid of it. Someone posted the link for a candida questionnaire recently, maybe they will post it again. Jean 190/147.5/135 12/7/

Guest guest
Jodi, My first thought is those dab blammed bars! I am one of those that can't breathe NEAR them! LOL Although they say 2.5 carbs, they have the " hidden " carbs of about 17 and on me they act like 117!!! Also.... If I eat a lot of broccoli I get kind of bloated and gassy. That is the only thing that I have noticed that does it and that only happens if I have it for lunch and dinner two or more days in a row. One more thing (or two)many of the casseroles that are posted are still quite high in carbs if you eat very much. Maybe you should try to stick to the turtle menu and see how that goes... The link is at the bottom of each message. I don't have TOM either, and LC has been wonderful for the mood swings AND hot flashes (although only GOD knows why they call them flashes when they last for hours...) ===== Kathy __________________________________________________
