Guest guest
I work part-time as a clerk in a convenience store besides working on the ambulance. This morning at the store, A white man walked in, then a black man, then another white man. Both white men are regular customers, the black man I never seen in my life. I said hello to the first guy, and when the third guy walked in, I said HI HI HI HI HI, basically to cover everyone who walked in. After the two white guys checked out and left, the black guy came up to the counter and began SCREAMING at me about being racist. I tried to talk and he screamed at me to shut up. I was in tears and shaking, my manager came up to talk to him. He said, " honestly sir, she's about the least racist person I know. " He huffed off. I felt so horrible about the whole thing, and I guess I can sortof understand how he perceived that to be the case but the more I thought about it, the madder I got about it too. We live in a very small town where there aren't a whole lot of blacks. My black cousins were the first non-whites who lived here. I've kicked other family and friends out of my home for making racist comments. I went out of my way to get the manager of the apartments behind me to do something about the Nazi flag hanging in one of the tenants apartments. (I lived there and I knew that it was in the handbook that they couldn't display provocative items). I've spanked my daughter for calling a black child a N___. I've dated 4 black men in my life. It's people who cry racism at every turn for something so menial like this, that people who really are discriminated against are disregarded. A similar situation happened to me one other time. My daughter was 4 and at the grocery store said " mom that woman is black " . She whipped around and accused me of teaching my daughter to be a racist! I am thinking about writing an editorial to the paper, but I don't know if I should. I found out this guy beats his white wife, and now I really DON'T want to say hi to him if I ever see him again. Pisses me off that I have to feel like I gotta bend over backwards to not be accused of being racist. I also think people should come here legally or be shipped out...does that make me racist too? What do you all think?
Guest guest
, I say go for it, write it. I feel a bit bad for the guy that yelled at you. He must have been through something to cause him to lose it like that, or he was raised to think all " Whites " are racist. I don't know my children have never even asked why someone is darker then we are. To them they are humans. A little side note story of something that made me cry. Hattie is the housekeeper at my mother's job. We went to visit one day and walked in and said Hi and then started asking her questions, How are you? What are you doing? This is what I did blah blah blah, just what he'd do normally. Hattie, later told my mother that was a wonderful child and he treated her with respect and kindness. I cried at hearing this, not because did what comes natural to him but just thinking what this sweet elderly women must have inured through her life to have to even say that in the first place So I didn't say Hello, now I'm a racist OT I work part-time as a clerk in a convenience store besides working on the ambulance. She whipped around and accused me of teaching my daughter to be a racist! < that's not racist. it's fact > I am thinking about writing an editorial to the paper, but I don't know if I should. < what would you say? > I also think people should come here legally or be shipped out...does that make me racist too? < well, no, but that's quite a broad statement. surely you make allowances for refugees? " it's not that she was being racist, she just didn't know his name and he was calling him by what she saw. it's like when my sister was little, she and a neighbor boy were arguing about something and she got so mad at him that she called him a " zipper head " cause he had on a hooded sweatshirt with a zipper on it " Something important to remember...we'll always be who we are. Guest guest
Reminds me of something that happened to me several years ago. I was working as a librarian in a small branch library. About 50% of the population here is Native. It was 15 minutes to closing time when a group of 12 or so people walk in and arrange themselves at one of the large tables. Because there was so many and it was so close to closing, I went over and told them that we'd be closing soon, to give them enough time to get their books or whatever. Well, the whole group got up and left. Then one of them came back and started yelling at me for throwing them out! He said that obviously I hated Native people and I must think they are stupid for not knowing when the library closed. He ranted for 15 minutes and the stalked out. Another patron came up and told me she had seen the whole thing and left her name and number in case I needed to talk to her later. I was so upset. It's normal prodecure to announce closing time, here I thought I was being nice for going over and talking to them personally. I called my boss the next day to tell her what had happened. She said the patron who had been there had already called her and told her what had happened. My boss said I had acted correctly, but the whole thing bothered me for a long time. Sorry this happened to you, >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> After the two white guys checked out and left, the black guy came up to the counter and began SCREAMING at me about being racist. Guest guest
I was married to a black man and my daughter is biracial and I have had this happen to me. I had to ask some very roudy teenagers to leave when I worked as a manager at a 's years ago. They went way off on me saying that I was a racist b**ch, etc, etc, etc. It is obvious that a small minority of the minorities use racism as an excuse to act however they want to. They use it to justify their actions and their failures. I am happy to say though, that it is a minority. Just like there is a minority of white people who feel that it is because of the minorities that they are failures. There are just some people who cannot take responsability for their own actions, they must find some thing to blame. It is upsetting. Just try to put it into perspective. Is this man worth your upset? Is he worth you feeling anger? He is not worth the time it takes to think about him. Take care of yourself. Guest guest
Thanks for everyone who responded and shared their own stories. The more information I found out about this guy, the more I'm mad. He came back to the store tonight, and the girl working there knew him personally from working with him at a previous job. She said he is horribly mean and was fired for an outburst of rage at work. Now he's also a liar, because he told her that he never said he was upset about racism, he said he was upset that he didn't get a greeting. As my daughter would say " what ever!!! " (holding my fingers in the W shape). I wish our cameras had sound. > Reminds me of something that happened to me several > years ago. > > I was working as a librarian in a small branch > library. Guest guest
He sounds like a jerk who happens to be black. If he didn't have his color to browbeat the world with, he'd think of something else. Sissi
Guest guest
Poor ! Sorry about the whole upsetting event. Years ago, when I lived in the Bronx, Enrique (aged six) managed to insult my landlady by singing that silly Happy Birthday version that says " Happy Birthday to you, you belong in a zoo, you look like a monkey and you smell like one too. " Granted it was not a tactful thing to sing, I guess, although I had grown up with it as a piece of kid nonsense, but she was Jamaican and had apparently never heard this stuff at all. She chose to think we were being racist. I do think that people should avoid being insulted by small children. Particularly small AS children, but we didn't know that then. Sorry the guy was so awful. My landlady was really nice normally. Must have been a bad day for her. Sounds as if this guy is always having a bad day.
