enzymes and poops - viola!

Well, I may be on to something. I had been posting about my somes

loose stools. I decided to throw away a large bottle of enzymes and

open a fresh bottle. In one day - his stools are very formed. Maybe

it's coincidence, but I think it's a little ironic. I can't remember

the last formed stool - must have been at least a month - proabaly

how long I'de been using that bottle. I have heard that ifthe

moisture/himidity gets to them, they will not sork properly. My

guess is that living in Houston, Texas, it doesn't take much to ruin

a bottle of enzymes - we'll see over the weekend!(-:

Well, possibly, but do you think that would be a humid enviroment? I'll ask

the doc!

Re: enzymes and poops - viola!

My daughter hasn't been on enzymes now for about 2 - 3 years, but, could

you

keep them in the fridge to prevent them from losing their potency, or does

it tell you not to.

In the summertime, you may need to supplement the salt intake of your CF'er.

I'll find the handout I just got (now that summer is past here).

That is very interesting. It's summer here and I've had to triple our enzyme

dosage in the last month despite no weight gain, and I've been wondering

what is going on. Today I opened a new bottle but I also increased

enzymes...and his poop is very very formed.

It says not to keep them in the fridge. (in answer to a later post by

someone)

I can't find the handout I mentioned. I must've left it at work. I'm trying

to get things organized.

And while I am a respiratory therapist, I'm not here to dispense medical

advice. I'm here to learn, and to help if I can.

Would it be possible for you to call the clinic again, and tell them he's

coughing more and just in the last week having trouble with absorption? And

ask about salt supplementing? (This is something I just learned about myself,

so I am not sure that everyone is supplementing.) Is there someone in the

clinic that you feel comfortable enough to share your frustration?

Best wishes,

Dixie

YES,,,,They should be at room temp. cool but not cold.............It makes

the difference like night & day :):) It is clearly marked .Do not refri. That

is one reason they are not put in huge bottles........they go faster and are

sealed until you will use entire bottle up quickly. have a great weekend

Thanks Dixie. I'm frustrated with our clinic. When I called to say he hadn't

gained anything since we had last been in at the end of August, they said

they would have to give him a supplement since he is now over a year old.

They meant some kind of formula or supplement drink. Why don't they look at

what else might be going on, like salt intake, or bacteria/yeast/clostridium

in the gut? Or *anything*? Why do they assume that because I am

breastfeeding he isn't getting enough calories? (He also eats *tons* of

solid foods.)

I'm not against supplements, just wondering why that is the very first thing

they jump to instead of thinking the things I mentioned above or, since he

has been coughing like mad all week, some kind of lung infection.

Thanks for mentioning this. It's hot as heck here even in September and I

wonder if the enzymes haven't been inactivated. We are at the very end of

our bottle and it's the last week that he's been malabsorbing again. But

perhaps salt could be the issue. ??? Our clinic never mentioned this at all.

I mean, when we were in in July and August they never said to put him on a

salt supplement. It's cooler here now but still in the mid-eighties.

Bev,

You don't think the sorbet I am putting them in could inactivate them

because it's cold? Since we switched to Pancreacarb he isn't gaining. We

also switched to sorbet right at that time.

I asked the nutritionist about the sorbet today but she just shrugged (over

the phone :-)) and told me to increase to 3 Pancreacarbs (4000 units lipase

each, so 12000 total) per meal. We have gone from 1 Pancreacarb to 3 in the

course of one month, doesn't that sound like a lot? He hasn't gained weight

the whole time. (Although, we did have him on 2 Creon 5's before we switched

to the Pancreacarb, then we went down to 1 when we switched because of the

problems we were having getting him to take them....hmmm.....his poop was

fine for about 2 weeks, then got greasy so we went to 2 Pancreacarbs...now

again, no gain since then but a week ago he got greasy again.)

Thanks for any light anyone can shed on this...sorry to take over the

thread...

I don't know as I am not a doc, but I have heard from folks and I don't

think it is the Pancrecarb that is the culprit. It is several things most

likely. Summer heat and need of salt replacements. also , watch what foods

he is eating .Sometimes in the summer , the foods are very different then

what we use in winter. The sorbet ---I don't think would be it BUT. I don't

know the ingredients are. That is a question that dietian SHOULD be able to

tell you. Maybe LOIS , at my office will know what interactions there might

be?? Call me next week and we'll ask her too. She is a pharmacist BUT a

compounding certify as well as a consultant px..and knows all " that there

stuff " :):):)

Have a great weekend.

Oh, by the way .call me too. I want to ask you about our ED day coming up

soon

NOV. 3rd. & you being on the panel .We just have no place for wee ones at

Thanks Bev. I thought you might have more idea than she; I don't know why a

CF dietician wouldn't know the answer to that!

I will call you on Monday...the ED day sounds like fun...Nov 3rd...I will

have to see if dh can watch the little ones...depends on what day of the

week it is and what he has going on w/teaching.

Thanks! Oh and the sorbet is simply pure fruit, fruit juice concentrate,

carob bean gum and guar gum...I was thinking more about them possibly being

inactivated by the coldness of the sorbet, just like the fridge...maybe Lois

will know about that...I was just brainstorming, racking my brain for

answers.

You have a great weekend too!

It is a Saturday. You can sure get allot of answers there . I wish I had

baby sitters but none available-so sorry . I remember that part,-- But I

meant the ACID or what etc. That does have allot to do with them working

right. Example --coke....That will not let the enzymes do their job either.

Our ERIN was told DON'T DRINK THEM>. .They have NO value to HER and why

waste her time. There are other things she could like and drink. She

couldn't believe she wasn't to drink them. Now she will some ......but never

at or around meals.....Actually , there are other things too ...Check about

the salt as well.

I'll look forward to your call.

You Know, GrandmomBEV, that's ineresting. I have wondered about that. My

insurance has a mail order system, where if I send in my script for 90 day

fill, they will only charge me a co-pay. Is cheaper than the regular

pharmacy, BUT I have received bottles crammed full of Creon with no moisture

packet. These are the ones that don't work. I open a fresh package w/ a

seal and cotton, and it's like night and day in his stool. It really upsets

me that I have given him these enzymes for over a month, and been

compromising his weight, tummy, etc. I feel so bad for my son. He must

have been feeling so yucky. I think in the future, I will call and make

sure these type of bottles are not sent!!

each, so 12000 total) per meal. We have gone from 1 Pancreacarb to 3 in

the

course of one month, doesn't that sound like a lot? He hasn't gained

weight

the whole time. (Although, we did have him on 2 Creon 5's before we

switched

to the Pancreacarb, then we went down to 1 when we switched because of the

problems we were having getting him to take them....hmmm.....his poop was

fine for about 2 weeks, then got greasy so we went to 2 Pancreacarbs...now

again, no gain since then but a week ago he got greasy again.)

Thanks for any light anyone can shed on this...sorry to take over the

thread...

Hi, troops; I'm reading the label on my Pancrease MT 16's and it says to keep

them

at a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius, but not to refrigerate them! It

must vary

with the variety: Creon, Ultrase, Pancrease, etc. I have to go off and

engage in an ethnic (mine) event, so I'll wish you all the best, and get

ready or my cousin will, des

pite her height of 4' 10 " will do me in!

n Rojas whose 5' 10+ " may not save her this day!
