Guest guest
LD OnLine Report October 2006 FIRST INSPIRATION AWARDS BE INSPIRED BY OUR AWARD WINNERS In honor of our tenth anniversary, LD OnLine has chosen three winners of the first ever Inspiration Awards. They were selected because they epitomize innovation, hard work, and success in the field of learning disabilities - or have overcome their own learning disabilities and are now an inspiration to others. Visit the LD OnLine Web site to read their amazing stories - we hope they inspire you as much as they did us. http://pbsmail.org/ct/y1qHYS91Cmmc/inspiration This year's winners are: + Individual / D. Deshler, Ph.D. Director of the Center for Research on Learning at the University of Kansas. Dr. Deshler has spent his life helping people who have learning disabilities. He has developed a curriculum of strategies that help students who have trouble with reading, writing, and math, and his strategies are also used to help students who have trouble getting along with other people. He trains both teachers and students and leads programs that change entire local school systems. http://pbsmail.org/ct/y7qHYS91CmmX/individual + Organization / Hall Tremaine Foundation The Tremaine Foundation made millions of parents and children aware of the intelligence and creativity of people with learning disabilities through a national public awareness campaign. The Foundation now takes the lead in early intervention, believing that it is important to find out whether or not children have learning disabilities early enough to help them now so they can learn better for the rest of their lives. http://pbsmail.org/ct/ypqHYS91Cmm4/organization + Celebrity / R. " Jack " Horner Dr. Horner is an expert in dinosaurs who is best known for his amazing discoveries -- the first dinosaur eggs in the Western hemisphere and the world's largest Tyrannosaurus Rex. He was the technical advisor to Spielberg's movie " Jurassic Park " and its sequel, " The Lost World " . He has learning disabilities and has shared the story of his learning differences in many settings. He did not get a college degree, but earned a MacArthur " genius " fellowship. http://pbsmail.org/ct/ydqHYS91CmmB/celebrity ----------------------------------------------------- LD ONLINE CELEBRATES ITS TENTH ANNIVERSARY LD OnLine is celebrating its tenth anniversary of serving you -- our readers who work hard every day to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities.
