Good morning everyone. Does anyone think a daily word, phrase,

abbriviation, desease, ect. would be benificial in expanding our

shared knowledge? If so please go a head and start. Maybe it will

help all of us new students/newbees.

Have a great day!!

Here is one I had this morning Bobbie. I hope this is useful to all the

and I had a new term in the MedQuist dictation I was doing. OCPA =

olivopontocerebellar atrophy. <g> Don't ask me what it means but the patient

thought she had that instead of what she really had but what she really has is

primary lateral sclerosis, a motor neuron disease.

Re: word a day

The Stedman word-of-the-day is ISOSTHENURIA.

That's off their Word-of-the-Day Calendar.

Good idea! However, I hope that each member of our group doesn't post a word a

day. That would be 799 words a day!! Yikes!

This mean s pertaining to the cortex of the cerebellum or pertaining to the

olivae. This is per Dorlands.

Karl, Actually she mentioned olivopontocerebellar atrophy rather than just

olivopontocerebellar. Here's the definition for olivopontocerebellar atrophy

per SEMD. Margaret

a group of genetically distinct, mostly autosomal dominant progressive

neurologic diseases characterized by loss of neurons in the cerebellar cortex,

basis pontis, and inferior olivary nuclei; results in ataxia, tremor,

involuntary movement, and dysarthria; five clinical types (four with dominant,

one with recessive inheritance) have been described, each type characterized by

additional findings, such as sensory loss, retinal degeneration,

ophthalmoplegia, and extrapyramidal signs. Several loci are involved, autosomal

dominant [MIM*164400 to *164600] and recessive [MIM*258300]. See Also:

spinocerebellar ataxia. Syn: olivopontocerebellar degeneration.

Looks like something got transposed and OCPA really s/b OPCA, and it's in the

new Stedman's Abbreviations. Like Ragu, " it's in there! " <g>

hehehe you're right, I did transpose it. It's OPCA - but I don't have Stedman's

Abbreviations - lol. anyway, I googled it and found it, but I wasn't familiar

with olivopontocerebellar atrophy off the top of my head. Once I found it, I

didn't read about it this time. :o)

Carol,

Good morning! OPCA, expanded, is a mouthful alright. I'll just be lucky to

recognize the term if I ever hear it! Well, time to go pick up my new Stedman's

Neurology Words that just came in at the local and Noble. I'm simply

reference poor! <g> Wonder how I'm gonna pay the rent?
