Ian watches not just our lips but our jaws and head tilts for clues about

what is being said. He can often lip read my husband and me from the side, but

can't do that with many people. He reads body language like a pro and can

sense someone's mood from across a crowded room by seeing how they're standing

and reacting to what's going on around them. He doesn't even realize he's doing

it. So from our experience, your child's visual skills can indeed help.

This is so true. To this day takes it all in. He's five years old now. I

remember times where he would ask me about strangers on the playground or the

store... " Why is that man angry? or Why is she sad? " Of course I have no idea

and they were not necessarily feeling either of those emotions but based on his

experiences and interpretation of the visual clues he perceived it that way.

He's caught some family members off guard because they didn't realize they were

making a certain expression that to seemed negative.

He does the same things looking at photos or illustrations in storybooks. If he

sees droplets coming off their face he wonders why they're crying, when they

could be sweating. If the character is concentrating or struggling physically,

he often asks why they are angry because he reads the expression as upset. Next

time you're trying to lift or pull something really heavy pay attention to your

facial expression and you'll see what I mean.

Now here's a weird one... he just said this to me last week... it was morning

and he didn't have his equipment on yet. He was asking me a question and I

either answered " yes " or " no " (can't remember) and I made some expression along

with it. He immediately tells me, " Mom, that face means you have diarrhea. " I

had to laugh at that one. Don't know what I was doing to give him that

impression. He was sick that week so maybe I made that same face in that

circumstance. He's a funny guy.

" Mom, that face means you have diarrhea. "

This cracked me up!! It is interesting though that he realizes that so much of

what a person is feeling is communicated non-verbally. He seems to really pick

up on emotional cues - that is a great trait!

That is exactly how our daughter is. You're right, what a wonderful trait.

Women are usually able to read people well, anyway, IMO, so now she'll be

Super Senser!
