(the tonsils were removed at the same time but they weren't the problem the adniods were). I was losing my hearing to boot. Everything cleared up after surgery. Same thing for (who has Down syndrome) - she had chronic sinus infections at age 4 and the adenoids (plus tonsils) came out. She was put on antibiotics 3 weeks before surgery but when the doctor swabbed the inside of her nose one week before surgery she still tested positive for bacterial infection. He figured the infection was trapped in there with the adenoids. Guest guest Posted June 7, 2006 Report Share Posted June 7, 2006 My five year old daughter has been breathing through her mouth a lot. She sometimes has difficulty swallowing. Snoring has also been an issue. She is congested frequently and has been very cranky. I took her to an ENT, because she has enlarged tonsils that sometimes touch each other. I found out that her adenoids are enlarged. She is going to have both removed tomorrow morning. I will let everyone know how she does. My daughter started breathing better after her tonsils and adenoides were removed. We were at the hospital for about four hours. Everyone treated our daughter very well and made us feel comfortable there. After her surgery, she cried a lot and just wanted to go home. She was given one dose of pain medication at the hospital and I have given her 4 doses at home. She was able to sleep all night last night. I feel that she is doing great. My son who is 8 now ( was 7) had his tonsils and adenoids out in this past april (2006). My son never had any problems with ear infections or throat infection either.he also has severe asthma . he use to also have huge tonsils and adenoids. He since birth to had episodes of having some bluish color to his lips. he also had a hard time sleeping at nighttoo. He use to wake up due to having a hard time to breathe when sleeping. I took my son to an ent twice before he decided my son should have his both out. He seemed to think my son was suffering from sleep apnea from the tonsils and adenoids blocking his airway. When they removed my sons tonsils they found that they were badly infected and impacted on the left side. His adenoids were so infected that his ent was surprised my son was not having a problems with strep infections. He thought they had been infected for a long time. No one ever picked up on it. just that he seemed to get the croup as a baby constantly and had very bad cases of it during the winter almost non stop.He also had been a child who caught everything going around. he suffered with the worst colds and respiratory infections that never seemed to clear up fully. My son did well with the surgery. His recovery was about 4 wks. which is in the normal range still. They can take them out at an early age. my cousin had his out at age 2 yrs. the only difference was instead of doing the surgery as an outpatient he was hospitalized overnight due to his age. I found out that you cannot see the adenoids w/o a mirror in their mouth, and that what I was seeing was his tonsils very swollen. We took my son the the pediatrician, and he put him on an antibiotic, and singular, a medicine for allegies, he thought my son might have swollen tonsils b/c of allergies, since he is generally healthy, with no recurrent colds or ear infections. Well, there are not as swollen but still are swollen, and I think it still/ it does still interfer with his breathing during sleep time. This really concerns me. Plus, if the antibiotics are finished, how can I expect swelling to go down anymore? I really want him seen by an ENT, and if they need to be removed then I guess that will be okay. Anyway there is the update on his tonsils. I bought some vit e and we tried that for the first time today. I gave him the pill and asked if he could swallow that, and it seemed like he did. Later when I came back in the room and sat down next to him, he handed me the chewed up casing of the vit e pill! haha Well, if he's willing to take them like that, then it's less work for me... take care M.
