Guest guest
Hi Everyone, Well, I thought I posted an introduction, but it didn't go through, so I guess I will try again. Knowing my luck, I'll end up with two intros posted. My name is and my husband is . We are currently adopting two children internationally. Jayden is six months old and is currently in foster care in Guatemala. We hope to be able to bring him home in July. Lillian is seven years old and is in a Liberian orphanage for the deaf. We don't know the extent of Lillian's hearing loss because of the lack of medical care in Liberia, but hopefully we will be able to determine that once she comes home. It is our hope that Lillian will come home in the fall of this year. I wanted to join this group so that we can know the best ways to parent Lillian and to help her grow to be a confident and self- sufficient adult. I have been talking to some deaf individuals both online and in our community, but I was excited to find a parents' group because I really would like to learn more about it from that perspective. I look forward to learning from each of you. Thank you for the opportunity to participate. Sincerely, P.S. Guest guest
I think many of the members here will have great answers and advice etc for you, just wanted to say Welcome to the group. Do you know how she communicates to the orphanage workers now? I can't wait to read more about your adventures as things map out for you and your newly growing family! --Robin In Memphis Constance 6, Bree 3 (mild HL), is 2 Introduction - second try Hi Everyone, Well, I thought I posted an introduction, but it didn't go through, so I guess I will try again. Guest guest
, Congratulations on the adoption of your two children. We have 7 adopted children, 4 of them from Guatemala. One of the 4 is our deaf daughter. Guatemalan children are a beautiful, bright, race. Alba came from Guatemala City and lived in an orphanaged named AGAND. She came at 5 years old and had never been amplified. She is now 15 and beautiful and doing fairly well. I hope the next few months go fast for you. Tish PS Where in Guatemala is your son from? Guest guest
Hi Robin, We are fortunate that they use ASL in the Liberian orphanage. They say that Lillian is already really good at it, so mostly my husband and I need to catch up with her! We have some books and are also going to start some ASL classes next week. They are conducted by our local Deaf Community Center. ~ > > I think many of the members here will have great answers and advice etc > for you, just wanted to say Welcome to the group. > > Do you know how she communicates to the orphanage workers now? Guest guest
, I wonder if perhaps these deaf girls lived in the same orphanage as Lillian? As far as I know, it is the only one in Liberia, but I may be wrong about that. I wish I could go to the conference, but we are hoping to bring home Jayden (the one from Guatemala) in July. ~ > > > > > This last summer, I met a man in NJ who has two adopted deaf > daughters from Liberia. Guest guest
- If I ever see these people again I will ask them. You have a year to plan; the conference is in 2007! Where do you live? I agree with Jill; since Lillian is already using ASL, that's wonderful and you can start learning that soon. I'm of the mind that this could help with Jayden's language development too. Babies can often sign before they can verbally speak - my deaf friends' kids signed at 6 months! > > I wonder if perhaps these deaf girls lived in the same orphanage as > Lillian? Guest guest
Hi , How exciting that you will have two children by the end of the year! I'm Debbie, mom to and . is 6 and has a moderate sensorinueral hearing loss in both ears that wasn't diagnosed until she was 2 1/2. She just finished 1st grade and is very excited to be going on to second. is 3, all boy, and is hearing...although his listening skills are questionable. Before we discovered 's loss, I always read to her with her sitting next to me. She seemed to enjoy it, but it had to be a quick moving book, or we would loose her interest. After we discovered her loss we continued to read, but would make sure that there was no other noise in the room and I would try to position myself so that she could see my face. Now, at 6, I read with her sitting next to me again. She does very well with her hearing aids and will ask me now about things that she heard that didn't make sense. In my opinion (for what it's worth) one of the easiest things you can do to instill confidence in your daughter is to believe in her and love her for who she is. Our kids are kids first. They aren't identified by their hearing loss....it's just a part of who they are, just like their smile.
