Guest guest
Hello out there! I've been reading all your postings, but now I need some help. My daughter is 6 and has been diagnosed with periodic spasms here at Childrens in Chicago. She is recently out of the hospital on the diet and it's so extremely hard! She hates all the creams and fats and the seizures are not going away. They seemed to be different and lighter in the beginning and we were hopeful, but now the head drops are back and as strong as ever. We are getting so very discuraged and it feels so mean. We feel the diet is obtainable if we can just find some kind of fat she can eat. She doesn't and never has liked cream, sour cream, cream cheese, etc. Could someone PLEASE help? We are desperately trying to give this a shot to see if it works. I've read such great results and since the meds don't work, I'm hoping this diet will. Guest guest
How about frying tuna and mushrooms in coconut oil? Mushrooms are so low carb that she could have quite a lot and they will absorb bucket loads of fat! Have you tried her with little cubes of butter served with the meat/fish or whatever and veg, or melted butter? The best vegetables to absorb fat are mushrooms, aubergine, courgette/zuchini. How does she feel about olive oil on a salad? If you sprinkle flax seed on too, that's great for fibre and it absorbs a heck of a lot of olive oil. Because nuts are so high in fat, if you do a nut based meal, you don't need too much more fat - I make muffins using ground almonds and either butter or coconut oil. If she's OK with nuts, you can make a sort of 'crumble' topping for blueberries or redcurrants, rhubarb etc. I do toppings which are just brazil and macadamia nuts, ground as finely as possible and mixed with butter and coconut oil, sweetened and then baked. For the protein, I just serve a little bit of cheese to start. Hope this helps , Mum to Francesca, Keto Kid since Sept 03, 6 weeks drug free today, not yet seizure free but down to a few minor jerks a day > Hello out there! Guest guest
Oh my Gosh! That sounds great! I love all these ideas. I sound like an idiot, but I need to get so many more recipes. Our dietitian wants to have the control of what she is eating. Can I have some of these recipes? How do you do muffins w/o flour? She does like nuts somewhat. Thanks so much....this helps a ton and I am going to whip something up right this minute! She doesn't like lettuce or tuna, though. (what a picky eater, huh!) She's always been this way. Gotta love her. I'll remind her in 20 years! Thanks a million! , Mom of Sheridan, 6 years old At 03:28 PM 6/24/2004, you wrote: >How about frying tuna and mushrooms in coconut oil? Guest guest
Have you tried hiding some straight oil in some foods? If she is allowed jello, you can probably get away with stirring some into that, or freezing some oil and whipped cream (and flavoring) into ice cream. Or half set jello whiped into cream and setting as a mousse. isn't really one who eats straight cream either, a lot of his fat content is from macadamia nuts and his 'ice cream', and sometimes hot chocolate or mayonnaise or cheese, but he has gone off them a bit lately. If we really need to balance out a meal, he will take oil off a spoon or thru a syringe, so that is pretty handy, if your daughter would put up with it, that is... Is she on meds? If so, watch for any signs of toxicity contributing to seizures, a red flag can be if there is an initial seizure improvement after diet initiation that is followed by a downslide. It can take a while for this to become obvious, like a few days, couple of weeks for the full ketosis to set in, which can then affect existing med levels strength wise, withut actually physically increasing the dose, ----- Original Message ----- > Hello out there! Guest guest
Don't worry, when I first started, all Francesca ate was chicken in cream sauce and tiny bits of fruit for pudding. She never eats either now! With time and a little bit of trial and error, you'll figure out what she likes best, what's easiest to create and what works for you both. One way I got Francesca to take the cream when I first started, was to put it all into a cup of decaffinated coffee with a sweetener tablet. She absolutely loved it... If you'd like to look at www.matthewsfriends.org, there are a few (well only 5 actually so far!) recipes. Just click on 'ketogenic diet' then recipes and the list will be there. The website is very new, actually has only been live for just over a week, but there will be many more recipes going on in the next few weeks. I am photographing everything Francesca eats if I think it could be useful for others and putting together recipes. There are instructions there for how to make a batch of ketogenic muffins. All you'll need to do is ask your dietician to calculate the quantities for you. You can use any nuts, not just ground almonds. The website will also shortly have some MCT recipes too. Watch this space... Have you got a hand blender with mini chopper for grinding nuts - it's one of the most useful things I have. I bought a Moulinex one - the Optipro is the new version of the one I have (in the UK anyway). Gotta go , Mum to Francesca, Keto Kid since Sept 03, and now a TV star!!! > >How about frying tuna and mushrooms in coconut oil? Guest guest
hrmmm let me think. Does she like peanut butter? I found a lovely macadamia nut butter with 24 grams of fat per serving. Not enough for 's ratio, but darned close. It's a little thin so adding extra butter to it actually works to make it thicker and easier to eat. When cold can't tell the difference in taste. Heck I can't tell. He gets 1/3 of a o so lo carb roll and a butter/mas butter mix. I find that if I make it ahead in the right proportions and leave it in the fridge it works well and if doesn't see me adding the extra fat it's even better. They also have low fat peanut butter ummm carbright I think. Try condensed nacho cheese soup and instead of thinning with water, try cream or even melted butter. I serve this with keto tortilla chips and he loves it. If she likes pancakes, try walden farms calorie free pancake syrup. It's got NOTHING in it so can have as much as he wants to cure his sweet tooth. I make my pancakes with 23 grams of egg and 10 grams of olive oil. I usually make a BIG batch at a time because they keep and freeze well. Just fry em up like you would normal pancakes. They fluff up even if you add a pinch of baking powder. They even taste great with the pat of butter and the syrup I serve them with. per 100 grams they have 8.8 g protein, 36.2 g of fat and .8 g carbs. I have to be honest hates cream as well. Another thing to try is walden farms chocolate syrup. You can add it to half cream, half water and have a chocolate milk (or if you have a shave ice thing, a chocolate slushy) Ally New to Group & Diet --- Please Help!! Hello out there!
