Guest guest
My audi said this is one thing they will test for. Does anyone have anymore info on this? She said there are a ton. I have never heard of an autoimmune disease that affects hearing so please fill me in. Do you think this could be in the " blood work " that her origianl ENT did when we found out Hannah was HOH? I go tomorrow to get a copy of that paperwork to see exactly what was tested - the tests were " normal " according to the ENT.

The only thing is to read labels, and you have to read the label every time you buy it not just the first time and buy the same brand. We recently bought a bread machine and there are plenty of recipes that do not call for milk. If she really loves bread, you can easily make it. I know our son would have starved without it during his white food stage. (grin) The bread machine was about $40 at Walmart. And since we go through at least 4 loaves a week, I think it paid for itself in no time. We got it because my kids loved the homemade bread at their friends' house. Baking bread isn't hard but it is time consuming. With this machine, it take less then 5 minutes to put in the ingredientthen turn it on. 3 hours later, there's a fresh loaf of bread. I consider this the ultimate in laziness -- second only to a rice cooker. But I'll gladly admit that it is a fun toy to have. Last week I made bread with parmesan cheese and Italian spices ... it never made it to the dinner table. They ate the entire loaf, warm with butter. And for a child with allergies, it could be a very useful tool. Best -- Jill
Guest guest
Sara, I just found a bunch of info on Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease (AIED) when I googled for " autoimmune hearing " . Does Hannah have excema by any chance? That is caused by a compromised immune system and often improves by adding flax and borage oil to one's diet. I developed excema on my hands after my C-section; it's common to get it after surgery since your immune system becomes compromised. I suffered with it for 10 months and then I discovered a lotion with borage oil that people said " cured " excema. After 3-4 weeks my excema was gone. I recommended the lotion to another ovusofter who'd had excema on her face for five years. She said that it cleared up and went away after a month of using the lotion. Obviously you can't put lotion in your DD's ears, but if she is suffering from an autoimmune disorder then perhaps borage and flax oil supplements would help? Nordic Naturals sells a chewable fish oil supplement with borage oil in it but it says for ages 5 and up: https://www.nordicnaturals.com/direct/prodsummary.asp?ID=54 They also have the pro-EFA liquid that we've been giving to DS: https://www.nordicnaturals.com/direct/prodsummary.asp?ID=50 (we put it in his milk and then use one of those $5 formula mixers to blend the oil into the milk so it's not in big clumps). Speaking of milk, I wonder Hannah has a milk allergy or a wheat allergy that could be making the autoimmune disorder worse? I've read about that. I suspect that my son, Jack, would benefit from a casein-free diet so I'm looking into that. He does like goat's milk, which I believe is nearly casein-free. I hope you get to the bottom of this. And thank you for pointing me to this group!!!! Nina --- saraandchadd saraandchadd@...> wrote: > My audi said this is one thing they will test for. > Does anyone have > anymore info on this? Guest guest
Nina - thank you for that info!! Hannah actually havs very bad eczema!! I have a script for the steroids but since they have been linked to skin cancer when used in children I avoid them as much as possible. I'll have to check out that lotion that you recommeded - it might give her some relief. Poor baby - her legs are so scarred already. Although Jake doesn't have a big outbreak of it I did notice a few small patches when he was little.....Hannah's was the same way - it started with two patches on her cheeks that they thought was a fungus.....like everything else we had to go to several different doctors before we got the diagnosis of eczema....hmmmmmm......makes you wonder! I don't know about the food allergies. She doesn't eat much as it is and its a fight to get her to eat - I wonder if she is allergic to some things refusing to eat it is her way of her body telling her not to? I guess I'll have to try a few things. Her dialy routine consists of cereal/strawberry milk sandwich or chicken nuggets fruit/crackers/or snack chicken nuggest/corn/bread/spaghetti What are some things that are in those foods that I should try to eliminate? Guest guest
Two of my kids have/had eczema. The other daughter and I have food allergies, not typical allergies but we get migraines. My nephew has eczema bad, worst I've ever seen. His was from wheat. His mom was following doctors orders and adding baby food veges slowly so they could figure out if anything was contributing to the ecxema. But she was also giving him macaroni and cheese. He ate it with his fingers and really liked feeding himself. She never thought about that having wheat in it. It did help when she took him off of it. Usually, if people are allergic to a food, it is something they want or even crave. Sometimes with fussy kids what they are allergic to is the only thing they will eat. What you have described is a lot of processed foods with wheat (cereal, chicken nuggets, sandwich, crackers, spaghetti) and also the strawberry milk has red food dye and my daughter reacted very strongly to red food dye, and we both get migraines from it. Try switching to rice based cereal. You can also try an elimination diet, which can help you figure out what might be causing the excema/allergy problem. Guest guest
I know this wasn't directed to me, but I will try to help answer. From an allergy point I would start bye eliminating all of the main allergens- dairy and from her diet probably corn. Both tend to be high on the food allergy lists. Eliminate those 2 suspect allergens for 2-4 weeks, then add ONE back at a time and see what happens. Watch for things like runny noses, ear infections (if applicable), change in stools, and of course the eczema. My Breanna had allergy testing done and it said she was allergic to milk and soy. Not to the point of anaphylactic shock, but the both showed inflammation on the scratch testing. We took away milk, and added it back and saw no changes but I do see some subtle changes when we add soy containing products back. For us the soy is the protein, not oil - that does help on finding food she can eat! Things to look for in the diet you listed: the chicken nuggets may contain milk in the breading, and also the bread probably contains milk. The only thing is to read labels, and you have to read the label every time you buy it not just the first time and buy the same brand. Manufactures change ingredients from time to time and bam now there's milk in that bread and it wasn't there before, etc. Duncan Hines used to have milk and soy free cake mixes- now they don't :-(. Eating out is a major pain for us, basically if we go to a restaurant we go past Mc's first and buy Bree what she can eat and when the restaurant we walk in looks at us funny we just say she has food allergies and we know these are foods she can eat. They usually don't have a problem. For fast food you can go to their websites and most of the popular ones like Mcs', Taco Bell, Burger King, 's etc have a food allergy list. We made a binder of them and know what she can have at certain places. Sit down restaurants are much harder to get ingredient lists, I know of people asking the waitress for the chef to come talk to them and then explain to him the situation. I'm not that kind of person so we choose the Mc's route! Hope this helps a little, I know my post has nothing related to hearing/HL. Guest guest
Flax seed is a great thing for everyone--I recommend it! Flax seed is better than flax oil. You can get a big bag of Rexall flax seed at Wal-Mart for pretty cheap. It's in the vitamin section. I recommend it for everyone, not just those suffering from exzema. > > Sara, I just found a bunch of info on Autoimmune Inner > Ear Disease (AIED) when I googled for " autoimmune > hearing " . Guest guest
FWIW, DD2 (dear daughter 2) was born sneezing - literally - and she was so terribly congested that until we found her allergies and got them under control her hearing loss registered much MUCH higher than it does now. She was allergic to corn, egg, milk, soy til she was 3 and for a while citrus and most grains. I would suggest making a food diary for at least 2 weeks... Write down EVERYTHING she eats - even little bites - and any reactions she may have (flushed face, sniffles, rash, darth vader breathing, etc.) to see if you can find a connection. Then start taking out your suspects -totally, one at a time, and this will be hard- for two weeks and see if there is any improvements. Meanwhile search for a good pediatric allergist in case you need one... and talk to your doc about getting an epi pen if there are any full body hives and/or breathing problems. Yes, they will refuse to eat some things b/c of allergies. Bodies instinctively know when some things are harming them and many kids will listen to that internal nagging. the " big eight " are Milk, egg, fish, seafood, peanuts, tree nuts, soy and wheat. My kids all had really bad food allergies and we managed to get them to grow out of them. (well, we're down to corn and lactose intollerance but no true allergies) It was a long hard road but sooooo worthwhile. also, go to POFAK http://kidswithfoodallergies.org which used to be a yahoo group like this... they are extremely supportive and helpful in ways you could never imagine. Food Allergy and Anaphalaxis Network is another great resource http://www.foodallergy.org/ If you want to talk to me about recipies or hidden allergens or anything just send me a message. I have some stuff on my website too that might help. I dealt with this for over 7 yrs - and have good friends still going thru it now. Unfortunately now in my late 30s i seem to have developed an allergy to shrimp so it seems the trip is not over yet! Kellie www.kjbeanne.com/kellie.htm btw, from your list of foods she eats: > cereal/strawberry milk > sandwich or chicken nuggets > fruit/crackers/or snack > chicken nuggest/corn/bread/spaghetti the cereal, chicken nuggets, crackers, snack, sandwich meat, fruit and bread are all likely to have milk proteins AND corn hiding in them (fruit more likely just corn, the others could have both) > Behalf Of Sara Chaddock > Sent: Tuesday, May 16, 2006 8:51 AM > To: Listen-Up > Subject: Re: autoimmune disorders > > Nina - thank you for that info!! Guest guest
Kellie, Reading this part of your post really struck me b/c my daughter (6 weeks old) was born sneezing too. In fact, she's been sneezing and coughing ever since and is fairly congested right now (which I attributed to a cold she caught from my older daughter but it's not going away). She's also had a rash that seems to flare up on her face every other day or so. I know you aren't an allergist , but does this sound familiar to you? I'm breastfeeding her right now, but would of course be willing to cut things out of my diet if it would help. And FWIW, she was diagnosed with severe to profound bilateral loss at 3 weeks old. Guest guest
All too familiar! DD2 had the same symptoms and the same diagnosis of hearing loss. Milk is the most common allergen culprit at that age, but certainly other thigs could be causing it also. I limited what i could while breast feeding but by about 5 mos. she could no longer breathe enough while nursing and we had to change to formulas and then rice milk with vitamins(not an easy route). It took quite a while to figure out what other allergens were bothering her and cut them out. By 3 yrs old she had outgrown them and her hearing tests were looking better. She is now 5 yrs old and charted to have moderate loss! And beautiful skin. DS (Dear Son, middle child, glasses & no hearing loss) had the milk and egg allergies also. His cheeks would flare miserably with even the tiniest amounts of these, and he had anaphalactic reactions if he got even a forkfull. please go to POFAK and or FAAN and look at what they have. At your daughter's age they won't do any skin testing, so charting the foods you eat and the times, and the times she eats and the reactions will be your best bet. IMO. feel free to email me off group if you'd like! I have tons of recipes and other helpful links! I can cook with it an nothing happens, but if I drink it, I just want to cut my head off. And I can drink red wine with no effects. (shrug) It's the only thing that does that to me and no one has been able to tell me what it is that makes it happen. I have no food allergies at all. It's just plain weird. Guest guest
There are many types of autoimmune disorders that can affect hearing. My daughter has Cogan's syndrome which is just one of them. She has a progressive but fluctuating loss. She will be stable for a while than drop overnight than (so far) gradually returns. She actually has a sever to profound loss in her right ear (left ear has a ci) but I can tell just how she is hearing out of her hearing aid as to how it is. Auto-immune diseases usually affect other parts of the body in one way or another. Hers was basically diagnosed by her symptoms. Usually her blood work is normal. She actually right now has a very large lump in her upper arm. We think it is a hematoma from a shot of vistaril she had 3 weeks ago, but now her doctors are wondering if somehow this is related to the cogans or if it is just her very bad luck. I have discovered with autoimmune disease it always seem to be something! Cathy
Guest guest
I can't stress the importance of the food diary and elimination diet. I don't have classic food allergies but I have food related migraines. Since figuring out my two worst triggers - anything with dark grapes and chocoloate - my life has been transformed! Guest guest
My children were diagnosed with autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED). So far, they are the youngest they have ever seen with AIED. My son started symptoms at about age 10 months that we know of. I guess the only reason we noticed it at 10 months is because he was walking at this time and was very dizzy. He couldn't sit up or stand. He would also vomit because he was so dizzy. With AIED hearing comes and goes. He might not hear anything at all or he might hear a little bit. This year has been awful. He has been totally deaf for most of the year. There has been a few times he could hear a little with his aids on. We went through so much testing and a lot of medication. I finally said NO MORE!! My children had tests to see if he had an autoimmune disease. I have an autoimmune and so does my father. It runs in my family. I have rheumatoid arthritis and my dad has psoriasis. (I don't know how to spell it). Thank you, Donna Fisher mother to ny 10 yrs. old. deaf 7yrs. old HOH

Guest guest
Oh, okay, thanks. Didn't know that. I had just been putting a couple of Tbs on my daily salad.
