As my other post states both of our kiddos are HI. My DD is moderate,

my son is newly diagnosed at mild (although they think he will

definitely progress - 7 months ago he had a very boarderline loss).

There are two possibly contributing factors

1)genetics

2)terbutaline which I was on for both. HL is NOT listed as a possible

side effect but we all know that drugs are a work in progress. I know

that brain development CAN BE affected by terbutaline use during

pregnancy and since we " hear " with our brain I'm wondering........any

one have any info - for or against?

Thanks - Sara

Sara,

My response is not scientific in any way, but I am involved with many triplet

moms and almost all of us had terbutaline during pg. Of the 100 or so triplet

families I know locally and nationally, I have run into three sets of triplets

where at least one sibling has with some hearing loss (two of my girls are HI).

Those are very small odds (5 kids out of 300). Maybe this med does have some

affect, but the greater effect of NOT taking the med is worse (severe

prematurity and issues associated with that).

Certainly any drug can causes nearly everything, BUT terbutaline is usually

taken in the 2nd and 3rd trimester to prevent premature delivery. Ears are

formed during the first trimester. Brain is developed throughout pregnancy.

They think that prenatal hearing has a positive effect on brain development -

early hearing experience. So a baby born with a hearing loss MIGHT be already

behind the 8 ball brain development wise simply because there was no stimulation

of the brain from sound during pregnancy. So I would think unless your child

had auditory neuropathy (which is brain deafness/HOH) that the Terbutaline was

unrelated. Believe me, it is the definite lesser of two evils - babies born

premature are much more likely to sustain hearing loss -- like 4 in 100 rather

than 3 in a 1000 in the regular newborn population. I would think that

genetics is more likely. Lots of studies are going on and they ALWAYS want

families with more than 1 hearing impaired member. You can get all the genetic

testing done free on all of you.

Thanks! So far we have two differne answers although I " know " that it wasn't

the culprit. I guess I'm just trying to put off having to deal with all the

guilt issues that go with a genetic diagnosis (Of course I know those guilty

feelings will be unfounded - be I know they will appear!)

My obgyn said there is no evidence and she gave me stats of a study on 149

women.

Then my audi contacted someone who is is medical school now who said

absolutely it can cause deafness.

But again - there HLs wouldn't be progressive if it was from the Terb.

Like I said - just trying to cover all my bases and I guess putting reality

off for a little bit more.!

I thought they quit using Terb years ago, but I guess I am wrong. I looked

it up in a book I have, and it IS supposedly ototoxic but only causes

dizziness and vertigo in some people. Neither of those is deafness.

You just never know. It's like margarine, butter, red meat, . . . some say

go for it, some say they're killing us. You make the best decision for

yourself and family with the info. you have and go from there. Don't feel

guilty. You're surely a great person and mama!
