Guest guest
hi i am janine mom to zara, 19 mo.- small chromo del. on #4 . zara has global delays and was assesed as 12 mo. at 15 mo. (except social, which was 12 mo. to age appropriate)she just started speech therapy last week and today was her 2nd. app. she asessed her as scattered from 12 mo. to age aproppriet in language.because of her chromo. del. its predicted she will have m.r. mild to mod. when i asked her infant dev. worker if zara had apraxia or was it just her mr that was causing her verbal delay she said maybe alittle of both. when i ask her speech theapist she says zara is way to young to know.zara has about 6 verbal words (or close to words:cat/ca, dad/da etc. and knows about 12 signs (her receptive lang. is (or close) to age appropriate.)because her chromo del. is so rare we have no one to compare her too.what we can see is that most kids with a simular chromo break were verbal but 1 child was not speaking in sentences but did have some verbal words. we are happy to be told that zara is interested in talking and signing and that she 'understands' the importants of it ( she knows if she signs or is vebal she gets something)so her speech therapist says she sees no reason why zara will not keep progressing and (slowly keep adding more words and become verbal, but she says she cant garentee this.) i have heard of kids who are dx. with apraxia at 17 mo.. zara can do some imitating (sticking tongue out, making rasbaries etc.) she has hypotonia in her trunk and neck but her mouth seems not to bad(she is not a drooler, she is good eater, though i think her chewing isn't as good as it could be.but she has no problem eating solids.)well i intended to give a short into. - oops- anyway, i got some good tips from st, but i would love to hear from others, i have found that sometimes other moms are much more helpfull than dr./therepist.i didnt take time to lurk here,i just desided to jump right in and i am looking forward to 'meeting' you all!(sorry for all the spelling mistakes, no time to correct) janine mom to zara pics/blog 360..ca/zaraandfamily
