Cytomel is T3; also known as lyothyronine sodium. I'm sure it is sold under

different names in different countries.

What we generally refer to as " thyroid hormones " is actually T4 and T3.

Synthroid and similar brands are T4; the body continues to convert T4 to T3 as

needed, which is why a lot of doctors don't approve

of taking T3 long-term.

Cytomel is useful when we are preparing for a scan, because it has a shorter

half life than T4, so, often we withdraw from T4 and begin taking T3 for several

weeks, then withdraw from T3 for 2 weeks before

scanning.
