Hi all,

We are seriously considering a move to the Houston area in the next

year or so. My son is 7 1/2, with apraxia and global dyspraxia, but

is doing really well. He is in a collaborative 2nd grade class (2/3

of the class are typical, 1/3 SDC), and he is doing regular 2nd grade

work and getting A's and B's. He may continue to need a partial SDC

environment, or may be mainstreamed with RSP for math. He also

currently receives OT, speech, vision therapy and adaptive PE through

the school district, and is just graduating from PT. I am wondering

how the schools are in Houston, specifically in regard to

SDC/mainstreaming/RSP. Also, what kind of services the school

districts in and around Houston offer. We are thinking of the North

Houston area, possibly The Woodlands, or perhaps Katy to the west of

Houston. Does anyone have any experience with the school districts

there? Also, for private therapy, are there good SLP's? Any good

therapeutic riding centers?

Thanks so much for any information you can give! You can e-mail

privately to nalacat@... if desired.

Stay away from the Houston ISD. It is known to be horrible.

I grew up in Dallas, and I've spent a lot of time in Houston. My

brother lived there for 20 years. His daughter always went to

private school when they were there.

I went to Texas A & M for college. It was only 1 1/2 hours from

Houston, so there were lots of kids from that area. Back then,

Spring had good schools. Also, if you want to go south Clear Lake

is a nice area, and has good schools.

I don't know how any of them are with special ed.

Houston is big!!!!!! It can take several hours to drive across

Houston. I'm sure you can find good therapist and everything you

need in Houston. The problem would be finding them near where you

are living. Also, there are lots of very bad parts of town.

Houston has a high crime rate. My sister-in-law would not go to the

ATM there because she was afraid of being mugged. My brother and

his family lived in a beautiful house in a nice area, and they were

still always worried about crime.

Really look at the crime in the area that you want to live. My old

college roommate lives in Clear Lake, and they don't have the crime

problems down there. I have a friend who used to live in the

Woodlands, and I'll have to ask her about it.

If you can find a safe area to live, then the housing is cheap

compared to so many parts of the country. You could probably still

get a nice house for 100-200K.

Good luck!
