Guest guest
Hi, The patient underwent a treadmill test and this was abnormal, in the sense that the patient had frequent premature ventricular contractions observed. Would you place a comma after " abnormal " in the above sentence? Thanks. Deepika.
Guest guest
No, I personally would put a comma before the conjunction 'and' as a complete thought/sentence follows this. If you feel for ease of reading a comma could go after 'abnormal',. That would not be wrong to do so, but it really doesn't need one other than before the conjunction 'and'. c -- would you place a comma here? Guest guest
No comma after " abnormal. " Here's why: 1. The comma would be used to set of a nonrestrictive clause or phrase. 2. " . . .in the sense that the patient had frequent premature ventricular contractions observed. " is restrictive. 3. To test whether a clause or phrase is restrictive or nonrestrictive, leave it out. If nothing important is missing, it's nonrestrictive. If the meaning of the sentence changes, it's restrictive. When you take out that comma, put it in after " test " to separate two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction. The complete sentence will now read: " The patient underwent a treadmill test, and this was abnormal in the sense that the patient had frequent premature ventricular contractions observed. " Now, if we could just get the physician to dictate the word TEST after THIS in the second clause, that sentence would be grammatically correct. ;-) Valeria Truitt > Hi, > The patient underwent a treadmill test and this was abnormal, in the > sense that the patient had frequent premature ventricular > contractions observed. > Would you place a comma after " abnormal " in the above sentence? > Thanks. > Deepika.
