I think it depends on the pay in your area. We traditionally have fairly low

wages here in my state (altho they have gotten quite a bit better over the

last few years) and even $10 an hour, especially with no benefits, for

transcription is pretty darn low. Our average pay here for MT in-house WITH

bennies is

$12 an hour.

Personally I think it is low, but if you are a newbie, that might not be that

bad to start out with, but I wouldn't stay at that rate for very long.

I have been offered a transcription position working at a clinic for

nine doctors with there being one other transcriptionist. The pay is

$10.00/hr with no benefits. I am wondering if you guys think this is

hourly wage is way too low? It would be good experience for me but I

don't want to work for nothing. Thanks for your advice on this matter!

Tracey,

What is your background? Are you a student? Or a recent graduate?

This pay is definitely very low, especially with no benefits, but if

this would be your first job and they are willing to train you then I

would take it if you can afford to! Those first jobs can be so hard

to find and it is invaluable to have that on-the-job training! It

doesn't mean you have to stay there forever!!

Just my two cents worth! :-)

Hi Tracey -

If you have no experience then I would definitely consider this position. The

pay is way too low for an experienced MT, but if you followed the thread about

what the more experienced MTs on this list made as brand newbies, then you

realize that they would have been thrilled to be making $10 an hour at the

beginning - LOL!!

In my area, in-house hospital MTs make between $17 and $24 an hour plus full

benefits and line count bonuses - but they require 2 years acute care

experience.

I think that any position that offers you the chance to get " real-world "

experience, plus offers a wage that you can count on, even if it is a bit low,

is worth considering. Being paid by the hour should take some of the pressure

off and allow you to concentrate on transcribing your reports as acurately as

possible without the need to try and rush in order to get enough lines to afford

to eat!

I'm sure opinions will vary widely on this subject. Good luck in your decision.

Hi Tracey,

I agree with S. If you can afford to take the position, there's nothing

compared to on-the-job training. If you're just starting out an hourly wage is

a great way to go if you can. I don't remember if you're still a student or a

recent graduate, but if you're new to transcription and were just starting out

with a national you'd most likely be much, making much less at a per line rate

at least until you gained more experience, and that could take months.

Just my opinion. Let us know what you decide.

I'd give my eye teeth for a transcription job right now. If you don't take

it, can I have it?! LOL! Just kidding. I'm still a student.

Sorry, but I didn't write this. I personally am a seasoned MT with a very

thriving business of my own.

I've been doing this for 9 years and though I make more than that, I would still

take it for the experience, and soon you will be making more.

Tracey, first off -- what state and area? That depends largely whether the

price is right or not. Good Luck! PJ

About the rate, I don't know, , though I would love to earn ten bucks an

hour for the MT I do at home for an agency, especially if those were US dollars.

But looking at the state of things and the way people are " outsourcing " , it

seems to me that experience, especially with a seasoned worker there who

hopefully could help you lots in the first few months, would almost be worth

paying for anyway! Nowadays we pay for tuition, but then can't take the next

step because we don't have " experience " , even if we are better qualified than

people who learnt years ago a bit at a time depending on who they working for

and never did a wide sweep of terminology.
