Guest guest Posted May 8, 2006 Report Share Posted May 8, 2006 This is funny timing. My DH is taking Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega. About a month ago he started having nosebleeds. He has never had allergies before, but I thought, well, it must be pollen. He also is not prone to nose bleeds. After getting checked out at the docs, and checking out fine structurally, I had an aha moment! Was it the fish oils? Well, he isn't ready to stop the oils to find out. We are still going with the pollen theory, but if the bleeds continue after " season " he is going to try stopping to see what happens. Any way Tabatha had been having nose bleeds on and off for about six months and the Dr said that it was a sign of hayfever. I accepted that but now wished that we had followed it up some more because it was some more. You really can't make too much out of it, unless there are other bleeding/bruising issues going on. Best way to deal is to use vaseline in the nose. Dry cracked mucosa in the nose plus a busy finger is usually the explanation. Allergies and colds do make kids itch/pick more. Nose bleeds usually stop after a few minutes of pressure. It always looks like more blood than really has been lost. We just got the platelet function test results back on my son (who has chronic petechiae - a sign of a possible bleeding problem - which could be an issue combined with high dose fish oil, but outside of the skin rash, has no bruising or excessive bleeding) - and despite 9 grams a day of omega 3 supplements - the platelet function is totally normal. So the effects on platelets and omegas is possible, but causes platelet dysfunction in very few - just like motrin. Even in higher doses. Fine for the majority - but the occasional rare adverse event does occur, and no way to tell who will be affected. Also, my son's brain MRI done last week was totally normal - great news! Nothing showed up to explain the right sided weakness either. I'm very relieved. If you can trace the nosebleeds to the supplements, you should stop immediately until you can get some good medical advice. For some people, the EFAs thin the blood and can cause bleeding and acute bruising. I'd work backwards and see if you can tie them to the supplements. My 16 year old son used to get TERRIBLE nose bleeds when he was younger. He still gets them today, but not nearly as frequent, and not nearly as severe. There was a time though, his nosebleeds were so bad, he would have huge clots come out.(sorry to be so graphic) I did take him to an ENT and I was told ... a) a lot of kids go through a period of nose bleeds. and turn on a cool mist humidifier to moisten the air. Both were true. My other 2 kids have the same experiences when I don't have the humidifiers on. FYI- He just recently started the EFA/EPA (for ADHD) My youngest (5yo apraxic) has been on the EFA/EPA since she was 3, and recently the E, and had her first nose bleed this month when I cranked the heat up, and didn't turn on the humidifier. hope this was helpful Dawn in NJ > > Has anyone had a problem with nosebleeds with the EFAs and Vit E? I have cut back on the Vit E and eliminated the EPA. I will see if we see regression. In any case I will add them back a little at a time and see what happens....and use Vit K. He has actually had pretty loose stools since last spring when he had rotovirus so I wonder if he is deficient in Vit K. That is doing alot better since we started giving him acidophilis supplements along with the fish oil. I am very interested in the neuro anti-inflamitory literature that is coming out on Vit K. The weather here has been warm, so the heat has hardly been running so I don't think the cause of the nose bleed is dry air in his case. Thank you again to everybody who responded. If you want confirmation that there's a potential vitamin K issue; metametrix offers a vitamin K test.
