thanks for the link on the calcium citrate. Does it need to be taken permanently or when can ya stop taking it? And what causes the need for the citrate? I mean what happens that makes the oxalates form that doesn't happen in everyone? If that makes sense:)

What brand and how much do you take per day?

I don't take calcium citrate. But it is supposed to prevent the

oxalates in food from being assimilated. It is available at most

drugstores and many grocery stores. Costs $9.99 at Walgreens for

more than a month's supply.

Hi, Carolyn. As I mentioned in my post the other day, my calcium citrate is KAL brand {it's very pure with few binders and fillers, which can irritate}... it's 1000mgs per 3 pills, so I take 1000mgs daily like this: 1 in the a.m., 1 about 2:30p, and 1 at night = 1000mgs.

Start out with only one daily (or even a half of one) and increase every 1-2 weeks to eventually take 3-4 per day. When you get up to 3-4 daily, be sure to spread them out during the day to keep a constant amount in your system. (Use just plain old Calcium Citrate.)

Do not.... I repeat..... do not use a calcium with Vitamin D. Vitamin D causes the citrate to be absorbed before it gets to the intestines. It then becomes useless as far as oxalate binding goes (not useless however to bones, etc.). Get your vitamin D from food sources and from the sun, or if you must take a Vitamin D supplement, take it several hours away from your calcium dosage.

Oxalate (oxalic acid) forms in everyone's body, plus they are found in foods (like swiss chard, spinach, rhubarb, nuts, soy, cocoa {chocolate}, and many more). So, we produce them ourselves and we also ingest them. It passes harmlessly through the rectum for most people. In our cases, it is absorbed in the intestines and then, in an effort to exit the body, it passes through the mucosal tissues (urethra, vagina, rectum). It's little crystals... like microscopic shards of glass or like the "pins" of thistles. As it passes through the tissues on it's exit from the body, it damages the tissues. There is also histamine released (in conjunction with mast cells) that increase the pain. And it also degrades hyaluronic acid, a major component in healthy tissues.

One theory as to why we absorb the oxalates rather than pass them like everyone else is the possibility of leaky gut syndrome, where the balance of good and bad bacteria in the intestines has become unbalanced over time and degraded the intestinal lining to where things leak through a bit rather than pass through completely. That imbalance is too many bad bacteria and not enough good (oxalobacter formigenes). I take a probiotic from Custom Probiotics. Over time, this helps to get your intestinal balance back.

I met a lady (who has become a friend) who has had this condition for 16 years. She has followed the low-ox diet for all that time and is painfree. She continues to follow the diet, watching out for those foods that irritate her and she just avoids them or at least rotates them (eating a serving every now and again, but not several days in a row). She took the calcium citrate daily for 10 years. She now no longer needs to take it and only does the diet. And like I said, she is painfree all the time...... (that's a bit of good news, isn't it). :)

Maybe what I've said here means nothing to anyone. Maybe some will disagree with it, and that's truly okay. We are all different and all have to find our own answers. I just know it has worked for others and has worked now for me. I've spoken by phone with several ladies who are painfree and discovered that if I lined myself up with people who are recovered, it gave me hope, first of all, and it taught me so much. I knew nothing about this beast of a disease when I first developed it. And I hurt beyond measure. The diet can be a challenge and there are days when I would kill for a Snickers bar or just good old tomato soup. But nothing and I mean absolutely nothing tastes as good as painfree feels. :)

I hope you find answers, Carolyn. I honestly do. Everybody deserves to live their best life. We all deserve warmth and happiness and comfort. I'm glad this group cares enough about each other to pass along their suggestions and to offer help. It means a great deal to all of us here. God bless you....

(Oh sheesh, I apologize for this long post. Hope I didn't bore you to death!)

Wow thats amazing thank you! I never quite got the calcium citrate equation until just now with that explanation! It totally makes sense. I know there is something going on with the foods I eat and the amount of pain I experience. Thank you for the details. It is so hard to follow it - but Im with you if it alleviates the pain great! I am thrilled that the last 3 days have been pain free for me, almost afraid to say it, but I have started to watch the diet plus I am doing the citrate. Although I got the ones with D, so thanks for that info!

Also what is NAG and OXAbsorb, I know this has been discussed before, but at the time I wasn't placing as much emphasis on all of this as I am right now so I need a refresher- do u use these as well?

Also have you used any topical creams or have you had your pelvic muscles checked?

Previously when I would urinate (sorry to get personal) It felt indescribable -almost like a burning/stinging, maybe an urgency - but not the feeling of a UTI. I has also noticed a strong urine odor - since taking the cal citrate w/ magnesium the flow is painless and I do not notice the odor.

It important to take the cal citrate w/ magnesium to avoid constipation!>>From: Carolyn52192@ aol.com <Carolyn52192@ aol.com>>Subject: calcium citrate>To: VulvarDisorders@ yahoogroups. com>Date: Sunday, January 25, 2009, 6:22 PM>>What brand and how much do you take per day?> >C>
