Well, I'm in south Texas but still up. :^) Without knowing the context

there is no way of helping with your question. Is this a lab value,

procedure or diagnosis? What is the patient being seen for?

p-Aminobenzoyl-glutamate Transporter (AbgT) Family

The AbgT family consists of a single functionally characterized protein, the

AbgT (YdaH) protein of E. coli (Hussein et al., 1998). This protein is

apparently cryptic in wild type cells, but when expressed on a high copy number

plasmid, or when expressed at higher levels due to mutation, it allows

utilization of p-aminobenzoyl-glutamate as a source of p-aminobenzoate for

p-aminobenzoate auxotrophs. p-Aminobenzoate is a constituent of and a precursor

for the biosynthesis of folic acid.

AbgT is 510 amino acyl residues long and has 12-13 putative transmembrane

?-helical spanners (TMSs). It is distantly related to members of the Ion

Transporter (IT) superfamily (Rabus et al., 1999).

The abgT gene is preceded by two genes, abgA and abgB, which code for homologous

amino acyl amino hydrolases. Because of the structural similarity of

p-aminobenzoyl-glutatmate to peptides, and the enzymatic activities of the abgA

and abgB gene products, it is possible that AbgT is a peptide transporter.

Although the mechanism of energy coupling has not been established, an H+

symport mechanism is inferred.

have better luck.

Hi Sylvia,

s & DeMott Laboratory Test Handbook from Lexi-Comp

I never was able to locate ABGt in there, but I have always been able to

find everything else. It really has been a life saver for those obscure lab

tests.
