Sam,

Portland has 2 Chinese and Oriental

(acupuncture)medicine teaching schools-both that

charge much less than a traditional medical

practitioner would. Can you get a hold of the Phone

book for over there? If not, I can try to get the

numbers for you. I've been reading alot about

homeopathy and I'm finding that the Orientals knew it

all way way way back in ancient times. Such as which

herbs to eat and what foods to eat to balance out

one's system.

They need to provide you with parent training and you

need to observe therapy sessions to see what

exercises/lessons the therapist does with your child.

You need to be trained in your child's diability. You

are the parent not a therapist. You can also write in

parent training into your IEP.

The literature still supports 3-5x/week intensive work with qualified SLP.

The rest is stuff incorporated into your daily life by family members,

babysitters etc, with drill and play geared towards encouraging/practicing

speech. We as parents AREN't therapists, but there are things we can learn

to help our children. That is not a substitute for time with a trained

therapist. This system stinks. We have to fight for our rights. The " no

child left behind " legislation was written to protect and help our children.

Short fund supply is overshadowing the good intent. We personally are

getting a paid advocate, and possibly a lawyer as we go into the transition

to school district phase. We are entitled to a free and appropriate

education. I know we will have to pay out of pocket to get my son everything

he needs (and I'm OK with that, but we can't afford the whole deal

ourselves), and as a taxpayer, I want the education he is entitled to. This

is why the appropriate diagnosis from a good neurodevelopmentalist is key.

It will help you with what unfortunately is a battle - at least in my

state. -
