For us it was a blood draw. Of course with us no blood draws are simple. lol But

yes they just took blood from her arm.

She wants him to be tested for Fragile X and High Resolution Chromosomes. At

least that's what I think it said LOL. Anyway, I was just wondering if these

tests were done with simple blood work or if it was something more difficult. If

anyone else who's had their child tested could share their experience with me

I'd appreciate it. Thanks again everyone

Hi my 12 year old son was tested for fragile x and chromosome

deletions. It was a simple blood test if you can call that simple.

My son was not plesed with having blood taken. It took about 4-6

months for results.

Yes, my entire family underwent genetic testing after I gave birth to

our daughter with a chromosome duplication with negative results. My

subsequent pregnancies were tested via chorion villi sampling; which

is similar to an amnio. My third son was re-tested after he began

showing some delays that could not be accounted for, but is

genetically fine. It is a very simple procedure: like any other blood

sample taken. It is the laboratory test that is complicated (nothing

to worry about, just complicated stuff for the lab techs - growing

cells, sorting, counting and staining of the genetic material!) The

most difficult part to bear is that genetic testing generally takes

several weeks - months to provide insight due to the lengthy wait

lists. Try not to worry (easier said than done, I know!)

Hi Leighanne, My son was tested for Fragile X and it was through a blood

test. I think they have to do more than a simple analysis, but all they took

was blood. My son is a Fragile X r. You may want to research this on the

internet. I did and had not heard of this before I was told by his

neurologist that he was a Fragile X r - which means his children have a

chance

of being Fragile X or a r. Hope this helps. Phyllis

It was done with simple bloodwork at Shands. These are chromosomal,

DNA tests and the only other way you can do DNA or genetic tests

usually is with a cheek swab (like a q-tip rubbing the inside of the

mouth for a few seconds) which is even easier. I'm sure they are just

going to draw a little blood, don't worry.

Peace,

Kathy E.

My son was tested this time last year for Fragile X. I do not recall if

that included the High Resolution Chromosomes but do know that he only had a

simple blood test. I think it may have only been one vial and not numerous

vials also.

Fortunately, his results were negative. However, the waiting part was the

hardest part of the testing for sure.

Best of luck with this testing. I hope everything is okay.

It should just be a case of taking a simple blood sample - like anyone else gets.

's had a mound of tests done - it's not a prob. In fact - he usually walks in to the Doc's room, holds out his hand and says "you bleed me"!!!!

You might want to ask if they can bank some of the blood - basically put some of it in the freezer for future use. #THat's how we didn't need to do bloods the other day at the genetics clinic.

Oh - another thing i found - try and get them to use a "butterfly" thing when taking the bloods. It's a finer needle and - for anyway - it seemed to be a lot easier for him to tolerate.

Hi Leighanne -

Yep, just a blood test. We had Josh's genetic background tested a couple of

years back through Shriner's Hospital. Don't know what your experience will be

but we had 8 vials of blood taken from a kid with sensory integration

dysfunction - kind of a rough experience, shall we say? Came back negative on

Fragile X and nothing else unusual showed up either. Good luck!

We had the test and it was nothing more than

bood work.

My son has had just about every genetic

test under the sun and it has all been simple blood work for the most part

My son had it done and it was a simple blood test. The tests showed

nothing so it was just a waste of my time.

I know a lady whose son's tests came back positive for Fragile X.

What did this mean? Her doctor basically told her it meant there is

nothing they can do for him. Because of the diagnosis, she had an

extremely hard time getting funding for therapy. It was a way to

write off the child as hopeless. For 2 years she did nothing for her

son believing the " experts " . After Dr. McCandless told me the only

difference with autistic kids with Fragile X and without is how high

the ceiling is for their recovery, the mom decided to try diet and

supplements with him. What a difference! I'm telling you this

because in my opinion, sometimes it is better not knowing if your

child has a genetic diagnosis than to have everyone around you write

off your child.

Beth was tested for Fragile X with just a blood test when she was 6.

However, the tech needed to get 4 little vials of blood, but only drew

2. We got a call the next day asking us to come back so they could

get the other 2. :-( Beth was NOT happy about this. If I remember

correctly, she point blank asked why they were so stupid not to get

the right amount the first time.
