Hi,

I live in the Hudson Valley also, in Germantown.Sorry, I don't know of any

support groups. There is a developemental ped in Latham, just above Albany that

some parents and therapists rave about. ( I myself didn't think he was helpful

and stopped going to him) His name is Dr. Malone, and he had another Dr. that

worked with him, Dr. Bourke, and lots of people think she is wonderful too. I

don't know what part of the valley you are in, so this may be quite a trip for

you. Good Luck!

My daughter is 2.5 and recently diagnosed with verbal apraxia. She

has been receiving speech for the last year or so...she is classified

as close to severe because 80% of what she says is unintelligable. I

am desperately looking for a support group in my area..HUDSON VALLEY,

NY. I am also looking for a referal for a great developmental

pediatrician. I will do or try anything to help my daughter at this

point. Overall, she is a normally functioning, happy little girl.

Her friends are starting to have a hard time understanding her which i

assume will soon make playing very difficult. We started her on EFA

but i have not seen a difference yet.

If anyone has any suggestions, help or advice, please email me back.

Thank you so much (abellovin@...)

Amy :)

Thank you so much for responding back..Albany is about an hour from us. We are

in orange county. What county is Germantown in? Does your child have apraxia

and what age is he/she. I am trying to figure out what the future will be like

for my daughter, that is what is terrifying me the most at this point. What

did you not like about the doctor? If you have anymore helpful

information..please pass it on. Thank you!

Amy :)

Hi,

We are in Columbia County, about 40 minutes south of Albany. My daughter has

apraxia, and also has Cerebral Palsy. She is 5 and uses a walker to get around

and has a Dynavox for speech. She has some words that I can understand, and uses

limited sign language because of her fine motor problems, so the Dynavox will

become her main communicator outside of the home. She just got it in November,

and she is learning to use it very quickly.

The reason I was not crazy about Dr. Malone, is that he refused to even

consider diagnosing her with CP, and didn't give us any useful advice other than

" keep up with the Early Intervention " . I decided that I didn't need to spend

time and $ for him to tell me that each time I went. (Her neurologist diagnosed

her two weeks later anyway) On the other hand, I know that he has a great

reputation amongst the therapists in our area and many parents think he is

wonderful. I think that is true of any doctor, some will love him and some not

so much. I don't have anything really negative to say about him, just that he

wasn't all that helpful to me. You may want to give him a try.

You are probobly close enough to NYC to find a good Doc there too. I would

think there must be quite a few to choose from there. Have you asked your

regular Pediatrician for a recommendation? Also, there are quite a few people

on this list from NJ, so maybe you'll get a recommendation from someone there.

Best of luck to you.

We live in Pittsford, a suburb of Rochester, NY. We have a WONDERFUL

Developmental Pediatrician, Dr. Hyman, who practices out of the

Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong Memorial Hospital, a teaching

hospital affiliated with the University of Rochester Medical School.

Dr. Hyman is very well respected in her field and in huge demand.

I hope that helps.

Warm regards,

Thank you so much for that info..but i think Rochester is a little too far for

us. We are only about 1 1/2 hours north of NYC. I will continue on with my

search. What kind of speech therapy is your daughter receiving? My daughter is

transitioning now onto the preschool services. Good luck to you...

Thank you for that info..someone else recommended us to the Albany area as well.

We too are just beginning this whole process with apraxia, although my daughter

has been in early intervention since 6 months..she was just officially diagnosed

You are right, we are close enough to the city to find some good doctors there.

I tend to think that most of those doctors do not take a lot of insurances..but

i will continue my search. We saw a neurologist in New Paltz who we thought was

terrible. That's why we are moving on to find another doctor. I want someone

that can follow Hailey through the years and monitor her progress or other

areas she may end up struggling with as she enters school. I appreciate your

help and I wish you and your daughter the best of luck too!

I live near Schenectady and we have been to Developmental Pediatrics for 2 of

our 4 children. My youngest will go there in June to be evaluated by Dr. Bourke.

Another good place in Albany is the Center for Disability Services. We have been

there twice for a AAC evaluation. They could probably help with your daughter's

care. They have a webpage: http://www.cfdsny.org/services8.html.

For parent support, you can try Parent to Parent of NYS. They have a website:

http://www.parenttoparentnys.org/ . They can match you with a parent of a child

with apraxia. I have done this, but I have only spoken to the parent once.

Hope this helps some.

Thank you so much..I came across her name in my search. Does she do

evaluations? I saw she has a school, but we are more looking for a doctor that

can follow and monitor Hailey's progress. Do you know if she takes insurance?

What area of special education do you work with? Thank you so much for the

information!
