Guest guest
I think another reason for the confusion between carnosine and carnitine, especially where seizures are involved, is that valproic acid (Depakote, Depakene) used over the long time can deplete the body of Carnitine, so bright neurologists will often prescribe carnitine supplements or carnitor to offset the medication induced defienciency. So some patients might actually have a need to supplement with Carnitine, as well as carnosine. That was about as clear as mud, lol. I hope it made sense. Guest guest
Has anyone on this list actually tried the Carnosine with their child? I went to the health food store and the manager told me she was ordering this product, but not because it was helping children with autism, but that it was helping people lose weight. It had been featured in Women's World magazine.
Guest guest
This is interesting just check that they don't mean L Carnitine apparently this is for weight loss and sounds the same. I was about to order some in NZ and I just happened to say " now that is Carnosine not Carnitine " and luckily I did. I really hope carnosine doesn't promote weight loss - we don't need that one! Guest guest
Dear Terri, Thanks for pointing that out to me. I wonder if the health food staff person was also confused. I really wanted to try this product on my daughter (carnosine) after reading the letter someone posted about how it is helping children with autism. Guest guest
Dear CJ, Did you purchase carnosine at the health food store? Is it in liquid form or tablet form? How much did you know to give to your son? My daughter is 13 and weighs about 99 lbs. Thanks in advance for any info you have concerning this product. Guest guest
Hi: My son takes carnosine. It stopped his EEG spikes in 3 days. His speech has also improved, and obviously his attention/focus. It does not cause weight loss; that is L-carnitine. Have a nice weekend, Cj Re: Re: Carnosine Has anyone on this list actually tried the Carnosine with their child? Guest guest
HI : I got the 1st bottle at the health food store. Now I buy it at Puritan's Pride online. www.puritan.com They are 500mg tabs My son is 10 and 103 lbs. He takes 1 in the morning and 1 at 3:30pm. I started him with 1 in the am- then the next week added the 2nd. I knew about how much to give him-as he weighs as much as a small adult, from researching it on the web- and asking our nutritionist to make sure. have a good evening, Re: Re: Carnosine > > > Has anyone on this list actually tried the Carnosine with their child? Guest guest
http://www.carn-aware.com/ This is the web site (not too much info) that I have read people using (its expensive) some with good success, others not. Those who were sticking with it were trying purchasing from iherb.com which apparently works out cheaper. Guest guest
Thanks to all of you who have posted the carnosine info. I can't wait to try it with my daughter. I think I may go right to the source and buy it from the doctor who published the results of his study using carnosine. None of my local health food stores seem to carry it. ----- Original Message -----
Guest guest
Dear Listmates, Those of you who have started carnosine or carnoware with your children, would you be willing to share how your child is doing on it? I am thinking about trying it with my 13 year old daughter, but would love an update on any progress you have noted so far. Thanks in advance for responding to my request. Guest guest
My 4 1/2 year old daughter Jenna has been on Carn Aware for about 3 weeks. Her big improvements came in motor skill areas and problem solving. She just put on her socks and shoes one day after about 4 days on it. Also, she understands games and circle time activities much better. At the pumpkin patch last week w/ Jenna's school several parents told me she seemed much more responsive and " there " . I do this her focus is better overall. She takes 400mg a day after starting w/100mg and increasing over about a 1 week period to the current dosage. Guest guest
Dear Valeri, It is so great to hear how well you daughter is doing on this supplement. I , too, think it's wise to start out on a small dose and gradually increase the dosage over time. This will be the way I start out my daughter. Could anyone please tell me what is an appropriate dose of carnosine for a 40lb 2.5 yr old boy? Should it be given once or twice a day, and should it be given with meals or away from meals? Guest guest
I'm no expert. From what I read you are to start w/ 100 mg a day and slowly increase to 400 mg a day. Ideally it is given over the course of the day a little at a time. We give it to Jenna (4 1/2 ASD) w/ her morning supplements and then when she gets home from school at 2:15. I can't remember well enough to space it out any more than that. In the study that was done all the kids got 400 mg. If you increase too quickly it could cause hyperactivity. Guest guest
I'm really happy to hear how great your son is doing on Carn-aware. Even though I cut back the dose for , I have seen an improvement in how much better she is talking. I'm not ready to give up yet...just take it really slow and make sure I give her the dosage in the am and hope it wears off by the time she goes to bed. He has begun this year to respond to the speech teacher using the PECS, and is showing a bit more alertness now, so, hope the carnosine enhances this. Next, about NZ and other grandkids...we have 2 in NZ. were living with Mum and Dad but they're splitting, still in NZ thoough. They visited here, in the USA, when their youngest son was 14 months old. He was a bit tempremental, said no words but gibberish, would hardly eat anything and had been difficult food wise since he got off the prepared baby foods. The nursery teacher had coaxed him into eating bananas with yougurt and since McD's had come into NZ a couple of years before, he would sometims eat the chicken nuggets, I think he always ate fries. His Mum is vegatarian but he'd hardly touch a veg or fruit so when he ate bananas, they thought it good, Here, he had a go at white grapes as well. I don't know what he ate the whole 2 weeks they were here...probably some kind of cracker and milk - sometimes. He was still popped onto the breast at bedtimes when he was hyper and didn't want to go to sleep, not denigarting that, just as it refers to his diet choices. Later, he lived on corn flakes, milk, bread crusts and ketchup. McD's fries. occasionally chicken nuggets, and that form of vegamite...don't recall the name of it in NZ at the moment. I think he began to eat cheeses and peanut butter, anything dairy. He suffers headaches and stomach cramps pain and is very thin. He's very bright, intellectually, but he has a fogginess that you can see him struggling to overcome when he studies. He's also, still hyper. I have seen one TV article from a Mum in NZ talking about her hyper active boy, what he eats, dismissing the possiblity of autism affectaion of any kind because he gained weight and was active. I gather there's not much newsy going on about autism and-or special ed. in NZ yet? My daughter in law teaches school, has a PhD in social sciences, her Mum is a retired nurse, very alert on medical things - yet - in her early 60's, yet both refuse to even think there might be something wrong going on with this child. Sort of like the Mum on TV, he's still growing, takes a vitamin pill now and then, etc. Once, I told the GrandMum on the phone in a holiday call, that I thought he still needed to be assessed, because of his diet preferences, etc., and that he has headaches... and she said she didn't think he did have headaches and that this whole diet 'thing' has been overdone...she said, don't you agree? (about diets, and I absentmindedly said oh yes, but was actually thinking in comparison to weigth loss diets. Gee, she's a nurse and surely they have patients on heart or diabetes diets...). Anyway, I was wondering if progress towards public knowledge of these related disorders is being done now or is it as bad as it is here, with denials, or just outright ignoring the whole idea..? Would you know of any way I could convince the Mum and Grandmum to get an assessment of this child even at this age? (he's now 11 years old), from NZ sources/resources? I've visisted the NZ autism web site but this will do no good to send as they wont accept such stuff on the home computer, Mum has one but it's off at the time on account of the changing family situation. Don't think she'd read article anyway. Dad, my son, didn't. He thought they were too dry and had too much medical talk in them. So, looks as if postal service mail is the only way now. So it seems they're all in denial, to me. They live around Auckland. Wonder if there's a support group or Dr. around there familiar with this ASD? Would like to get through to reach this family somehow. Grandma Peg > > > > >

Guest guest
http://store./iherb/carnosine.html I already gave zinc and vitamin e so when I decided to give carnosine a try I bought it seperatly. Yes the Carn-aware is very expensive. If you look hard enough at the web page you can find that the ingredients are 200mg Carnosine, plus small primer doses of zinc and vitamin e. : ) Maddie > Carnosine is very expensive-had anyone found it a good form for a > reasonable price..We started with Chez's product but its to much.. >

For my kids, nothing really happened with chelation except they started tolerating foods and supplements. When I added those things, THEN the improvements started. I used carnosine for several months. It did help receptive language, behaviors, and a small portion of my #2 son's visual stims. It did tend to increase copper, so I had to give it with a little zinc. Dana
