Guest guest
Actually we have a Waldorf school here in Marietta, PA (Lancaster County), but I don't have any information on the school or program. Guest guest
I don't recall ever hearing of a Waldorf school here. Could it be what we call a Montessori school? Montessori was an Italian who developed methods of teaching children with developmental delays. Her method lets each child learn at his own pace and uses a lot of manipulatives from which children draw conclusions. Guest guest
Well, a quick web search reveals that there are over 140 Steiner Waldorf schools in the U.S. No, this is NOT Montessori! For a quick look at their theory of education see: http://www.awsna.org/awsna-faq.html Rick

Guest guest
No, its not. Waldorf or Rudolf Steinerschools are based on the philosophy of Steiner. He sees every child as a spiritiual being that we guide along her or his life. A child is a part of nature. In the kindergarten classes there are only natural materials. No plastic, no computers, no worksheets. The children learn in a different way. They learn to understand in stead of to automize. It's a warm envorinment where children can be children without the danger of having to 'achieve'. Especcially here in Holland where in other schools children of 5 learn where the back of a cow is on a sheet of paper and where the first 'tests' are taken at that age. Where digits and letters are tought as early as 4. Where children are approached at a verbal way instead of an emotional, feeling way. Where, like in all of society, your tought that who you are is measured by what you achieve these schools are a haven of love and peace. And its a complete way of learning. They see so many aspects of ways of looking at live. From the old testament to the greek mythology. My 4 year old is a happy child because of this school. So I hope that Summer can go there to. The strenght of the school is in the same time the weakness. Can they give the 'structure' that a child with Down needs? Thats why I hoped that among the 400+ members of this group there was someone that had experience with this. The problem with private schools is that they can pick and choose which kids they will accept into the school and our public schools often stonewall services in the private school setting--so children end up having longer school days. nancy

Guest guest
In the Netherlands the Waldorf schools aren't private. Schools here are forbidden by law to ask for any tuition money. In stead of that the schools asks for a voluntary gift which is depended on your income. But even if by circumstance you can't pay that, your child still is welcome on the school. The money thats been asked is used in benefit of the children to pay for extra teachers like eurithmics (which is a kind of dance lesson). Rob -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: NEHolroyd@... Guest guest
Question? What is a Waldorf school? [ ] Waldorf schools I've been reading a lot about Waldorf schools and was wodering if anyone with apraxic/late talking children have tried them or heard from anyone who has. We don't have one where I live, but there is always the possibility that we'll move... Anyway, just curious to hear if anyone has any opinions on this. Thanks! Guest guest
oh, sorry! Waldorf schools have been in this country since the 1920s and were developed in Austria at the turn of century. There are several in the US, though I'm not sure how many. They aren't very well known despite being around for so long and despite the involvement of some famous parents (e.g., Newman) and having some famous graduates (e.g., Ken Chenault, president of American Express). Anyway, Waldorf schools use a multisensory approach to learning and focus on reaching children through all of their senses. For example, all children take movement class, learn to play the recorder, learn to knit--a lot of good OT and PT things that develop skills that translate well into learning more traditional things. Waldorf schools do not believe in bringing the curriculum of older children down to the youngest learners (e.g., early reading--though they do promote literacy through other methods), standardized testing, or teaching very young children via computers (and they discourage tv). All this stuff is in line with what child development experts (like Jane Healy) recommend but the opposite of what schools tend to do right now. It's not a school for " special needs " kids but so much of what I've read made it sound perfect for a kid who needs a " rich sensory diet " (well, what kid doesn't?) or a less verbal-centric approach to education (if that makes sense...). I'm kind of surprised no one here has tried it or thought about it. I have an excellent article from the Atlantic Monthly by Todd Oppenheimer (same guy who wrote the Computer Delusion about early use of computers in education) if anyone is interested. I only have it as a word file, so if you email me, I can send you the attachment. Thanks, Kris > > Question?
