Guest guest
Jeanne, you may recall there used to be a list like this done by " Can We Talk " 's Deb http://www.tayloredmktg.com/dyspraxia/ (Great site that isn't brought up often enough and back when Tanner was first diagnosed it used to be my favorite parent friendly one) Back then Deb and I had spoken and she was going to let me use the map she had started up on CHERAB...I know we talked about it. The idea is a tough one however for me because even though getting people of like conditions together is great - of course we don't want anywhere on the net contact info for speech impaired or essentially nonverbal children. This is why I chose instead to go through Friends Health Connection http://www.48friend.org or even better support groups. Back when Tanner was 3 years old -or 4, it was probably more important to me then him to get him together with other children who also had speech impairments. Thing is that since he has been mainstreamed since kindergarten -I have found that Tanner chooses for his friends children that are more vocal than the norm. We are fortunate in that he never had trouble making or keeping friends, and is never teased -or nothing outside of what any kid goes through. As our children grow as always self esteem is so important. Letting a child learn by just playing alone and with others is sometimes in today's world pushed aside for more " important " activities like academics...or in our children's case -therapy. And even without speech impairments there are always going to be those children that are more popular with or without impairments of speech. Here's some links on this topic http://www.pubpol.duke.edu/centers/child/fasttrack/parents.html http://www.boystownpediatrics.org/ParentTips/makefriends.asp http://www.fortnet.org/ParentToParent/PFellers/par_frnd.html http://www.aboutourkids.org/aboutour/articles/friends.html http://familyfun.go.com/parenting/child/dev/feature/famf97makefriend/ Or books like Good Friends Are Hard to Find: Help Your Child Find, Make, and Keep Friends Raise Your Child's Social IQ: Stepping Stones to People Skills for Kids (have not read any of them so don't know if they are good or not) I'm quite aware that the studies done by ASHA will say that statistically children with impairments of speech are at risk for having social issues -but I wouldn't assume that to be so. There is so little really known about speech impairments. That would be like saying all those that wear glasses have trouble making friends. I'm sure some do -but so do some who don't wear glasses. We should do a survey here. Do you have a child that is accepted by peers and has no trouble making friends? Yes Most times Rarely No Even though your child was in special needs preschool placement, he or she has been mainstreamed since kindergarten. Yes No Other (please explain) I'll start for Tanner Yes Yes ....anyone else? =====

Guest guest
We should do a survey here. Do you have a child that is accepted by peers and has no trouble making friends? Yes Most times Rarely No Even though your child was in special needs preschool placement, he or she has been mainstreamed since kindergarten. Yes No Other (please explain) Yes Other (please explain) We are homeschoolers. My child with apraxia and dysarthria is my fourth so he has built in playmates who are a brother 9 3/4, sister 8 1/2, and sister 6 1/2 years old. None of my children have ever been in any institutional setting. My youngest has OT therapy followed by ST twice a week for 30 minutes a session. His siblings come with us and they learn how to do therapy at home with their brother. My child makes friends easily (library or park) even though other children do not understand him. He has been socialized to see everyone as a playmate so he has no self esteem or negative socialization issues.

Guest guest
In terms of social interaction- I have been blessed with - he picks up on nonverbal clues and was able to communicate non verbally effectively during his preschool years. Now that he is 8 he is still a socially sufficient kid. Now i am looking for pastimes that do not demand LOTS of talking. Soccer is one of passions and is great for the sense of belonging and recognition. He also loves animals and we are fortunate to live in a place where 4H is active. For parents of young kids know that there are pockets of times when your kid will be able to socialize, but not have to speak tons. Obviously few of our apraxic kids are going to join the debate team- but i was thinking of chess for him- maybe art for other kids. There is hope... Liz, Thanks. I don't have a problem with my son socializing but after school,it seems that in his school many kids come from all over so playdates are hard to put together. But even then,it seems that many kids don't have the opportunity, ie boy scouts etc .thanks jbmistletoe <jbmistletoe@...> wrote: > > Jeanne, you may recall there used to be a list like this done > by " Can We Talk " 's Deb > http://www.tayloredmktg.com/dyspraxia/ > > (Great site that isn't brought up often enough and back when Tanner > was first diagnosed it used to be my favorite parent friendly one) > Back then Deb and I had spoken and she was going to let me use the > map she had started up on CHERAB...I know we talked about it. > > The idea is a tough one however for me because even though getting > people of like conditions together is great - of course we don't > want anywhere on the net contact info for speech impaired or > essentially nonverbal children. Guest guest
Hello , I am in Torrance Ca. About 40 to 45 minutes away from you. My son is 7.9 yrs old. 2nd grade. Apraxia,ADHD, aspergers and anxiety issues. He can talk fairly well. But receptive and expressive delays. Some pronunciation problems and sentence structure. He says pirates of the Caraggeen instead of pirates of the Caribbean. He will say where did you went instead of where did you go. You can email me off group if you would like. Thanks, Jan In Ca.
