I know a few months ago, someone was talking about

one of their kids having croup. jenna has a cold again,

and i thought rachelle was getting it now. Well, this

morning, rachelle woke up around 4am, with a cough, that

sounded like a bark, very weird.(and i remembered someone

talking about that sound...none of my kids ever had this)

She only made that noise a few times, but wanted to get up.

We turned on the tv and she was fine, still now,

she seems perfectly fine. She does have a runny nose,

and a slight cough...but it doesn't sound like that bark

noise now. I did do some searches on the croup...and it

told me what to do...but, should i be concerned now, that

she's not doing it? Or will it come back tonight, when

she goes to bed? My humidifer isn't working right now,

figures, so does opening the windows help, or the shower

steam thing work as well? Or get a new humidifer?

Or even take her to the ER, which i really do not want

to do, since i have jenna home today since its saturday.

Like i said, she seems perfectly fine now.

Help, please!!!

nancy....who is very tired

Just be prepared in case it happens again. It might and it might not.

Or will it come back tonight, when

Shower steam works well.

Or get a new humidifer?

A humidifier is nice. I don't know if you should go and get one though.

She sounds as if she feels pretty well now and it doesn't sound as if she

was terribly sick last night. However, if you can afford it and can do it

easily, it might be nice to be prepared. It can be worse to have to rush

out and buy things.

I would not take her to the ER when she seems fine. You could call your

pediatrician though.

It's not a bad idea to have a humidifier on hand, but the bathroom with a

hot shower running works well for croup. Just watch for any signs of

distress, blue lips, etc., that would mean time for an ER visit. Just

remember the shower if it comes back tonight and watch for signs of it

starting in le as it is contagious to the under 4 or 5 set.

ok...i think i will go and get a new humidifer..

and give the ped. a call. I would much rather be

prepared, then be panicing in the middle of the night...

thanks SO much...

You do want to be listening for it so I would.

Croup is a real little kids' disease; I think it has to do with tiny air

passageways or something and when they are older their passageways are much

bigger and they just do not get croup.

But that is my mother's explanation and it may be very unscientific.

Even if Jenna gets it, it shouldn't be as bad for her because she's

bigger. It's worse for little ones because their throats are so

small. A steamy bathroom or a walk outside both can help. We did the

shower with this morning. He had a very croupy cough. Unusual

in a 7 year old, but there it was.

Croup can be scary because it sounds so awful but a little steam will

usually make a big difference. Blue lips, fingertips and labored

breathing (where the child is really sucking to get air in and you

can see the chest working overtime) are signals you need to go to the

ER. Those are pretty rare symptoms though.

Hopefully she'll feel a lot better tonight. If you can, elevate the

head of her bed a few inches. That always seems to help too.

Oh thanks so much Tina...

she is really feeling good, except for

the runny nose...i haven't heard that noise

come out of her at all since 4am...

I called the ped...and he said pretty much

what the internet said and what you all have

been saying. So, i just need to get my butt to the

store to get a new humidifer...and hope we don't

have any problems tonight.

thanks again!

Your mother is right on. That is the reason kids get croup.

Everyone who said to watch out for respiratory distress is correct.

Sometimes croup will run right into stridor, and stridor is a high

pitched wheezy sound when the airways are swelling shut...means get

her to the hospital.

I was going to answer Salli's explanation, but is right on the

money and beat me too it to boot. Does this mean I have to share my

PA shingle with now, LOL? (j/k)

So is that wheezy sound different from the bark cough?

im imagining it's when she's breathing? correct?

i haven't noticed that at all, and i hope i don't!

> So is that wheezy sound different from the bark cough?

Yes, it is. The barking cough is just that. It is a cough that

happens on exhalation and has a deep barking quality to it. The

wheezing is the sound they make trying to pull air INTO very

constricted airways. You might also see her ribs appearing more

prevalent as she strains to inhale if that occurs.

> im imagining it's when she's breathing? correct?

Yes, inhaling.

> i haven't noticed that at all, and i hope i don't!

Let's hope not either. It isn't fun for anyone. BTDT.

Yuck, I hate the croup. I have held my kids up in front of the open freezer

door. The vapor seems to help lessen the cough.

Hope she is better soon,

I slept in 's room when he had it. He was only 8 months old at the

time. We had a very easy case of it, but he got in on Christmas Eve night!

If Jenna got it, it would most likely look like a cold with a bad cough.

The only reason we can tell you what to do is that we have kids who are

older and have been through it already! See, it pays to hang out with the

your elders ! :-)

well, i tried to put rachelle to sleep...and she

was coughing alot (not barking)..so i let her lay on

the futon (which is my bed at night, in the living

room)kind of sitting up

to go to sleep. Well, about 10minutes later...she threw

up...all over everything...ugh!

That was about 30 minutes ago..and now she is asleep on

the futon again..all new blankets..sitting up. I hope this

doesn't go on all night...i will run out of blankets... :(

She looks very sick tonight...and she was GREAT all day...it

was like she wasn't even sick, except for a runny nose.

Jenna has been saying " 5 minutes and rachelle go in her bed " ..and

totally stressing on it. See, jenna sleeps in the recliner chair

in the living room at night. She doesn't like it if rachelle is

in here too (which rarely happens, only when really sick)..

I think im in for a very long night....yuk

nancy :(

Poor . Poor le. Poor Jenna for that matter.

I hate the feeling when I realize I am in for that kind of night.

May it be easier than you expect.

Poor baby. Poor you!

If it helps save on laundry, what I do is set up a sick station for the kids

using doubled up sheets over whatever they are laying on so that if they get

sick, I just grab up the sheet and the rest doesn't get yucky.

I hope things go better tonight.

well, i guess i wasn't too bad..we were up twice for

about an hour each time...the " bark " came back the

first time up...we did the freezer thing..(she did NOT like

that..she kept saying " too cold " ) but it seemed to help.

The second time she was just up coughing and just plain

grumpy, but we are all up now, and she seems fine again.

So, hopefully we are done with the worse...

thanks everyone for the help and good wishes.

nancy...who's hoping for a much better night tonight!
