She was! :-)

And she's not streamed to my radio stations any more, so I can't listen --

her website CHARGES to listen to archived shows, if you can believe it!

I used to LOVE listening to some poor person phoning up hoping to get good

advice...I'd stand in my kitchen doing the dishes and yelling, " oooo, watch

out! Oh, I wish you hadn't said THAT! "

I don't know why I love listening to her and Judge Judy so much. They're

just so BITCHY! Of course, my sense of humour runs deeply into bitchy...

Nope! :-P

Marc INSISTS that we must upgrade, be it through cable or satellite.

See, when went over to Ben's, he saw the " biggest TV in the WORLD,

mom! " and it was showing The Cartoon Network. (canadian cable; you guys

have nickelodeon or something like that?)

Anyway, I cannot stress enough the words " The Cartoon Network " . Imagine it

done in one of those big boomy echo-ey voices... " The CarTOON NETwork! "

Well, Marc immediately decided that MUST have the cartoon network. He

MUST be able to watch everything every other kid does. I TOLD him he sees

YuGiOh and BeyBlade on the station we already have, and those are the most

popular shows with kids in 's school right now, but that is not ENOUGH.

(boomy guy's back)

I think maybe this crusade of his was about when it began, but now he's

just greedy for more TV to zone out in front of.

Here's what I have to decide: are the extra channels for the same price

worth having to watch the same thing on every TV? If we choose satellite,

I'll be watching frigging YuGiOh every day and I will never see Judge Judy

again! (ACK!)

<<<<<<<<<

No.

....and if you get satellite, you lose your " local " stations, I believe.

I don't know if anyone has answered this or not, as I'm way behind on

posts but let me try to explain.

The name of the show is YuGiOh. This is a Japanese cartoon card

game. Yugi is the main character. They use the cards to 'duel' by

battling monster against monster. Each card's monster has defense

and attack points. There are magic cards and trap cards as well.

The idea is to get the opponents points to zero.

My daughter is a yugioh freak. Be glad you don't get it. All I hear

all day long..yami, yugi, bakuraaaaaaaaaaa.

Thing about Alyx and YuGiOh

Since her little episode last year when she told me she was a wolf,

I'm really scared about her fascination with this Yugioh thing. Alyx

is 12, she's got page after page of pictures of the characters

downloaded. She kisses the screen and tells me she's in love with

bakura (one of the characters). She's made up a name for herself,

sakura. I mean her behavior is just bizzare about it. Even when I

get on her, she does nothing to hide it...and I'm considering banning

her from it.

She does duel with some of the other kids too, no biggie.

I'm so scared she's gonna get sucked into this the way some people

were with D & D a few years back. And oh gosh if she learns about the

occult and stuff. She's all into anything mythical as it is, and

believes her room is haunted.

Cartoon Network IS here.....

Just be careful...Although it IS " cartoon " network, the " cartoons " are NOT

necessarily what you wnat watching.

I know this because Jacqui was on a Cartoon Network kick for a looooong

time, read: Ed, Edd and Eddy *sigh*

I will second Penny's advice here, Jacquie. What little bit of programming

I've seen from The Cartoon Network is not something I'd want exposed

to, either.

I'm not afraid of a little harmless imagination. I believe in

afterlife and spirits too, and I even played with a ouija board when

I was a teen (have a really scary story about it too) and will never

do it again!

In the religion I was brought up in, all of these things are evil. I

do not want her getting wrapped up in the occult or voodoo or

anything like that. I don't mind that she believes in ghosts too,

but I find it ridiculous that she keeps insisting her room is

haunted. She claims to see and hear them on a regular basis. I've

questioned her about this, and she insists that these are REAL...no

possibility that she imagined them. (I have not seen any indication

of ghosts in this house).

The main thing is the wolf thing. She seems to have this distortion

of reality, and I worry that she is not able to decipher what is real

and what isn't. To dabble and question is no biggie, I could handle

that...but there's a point to where it's just too far out there.

Does that explain it a little better why I'm concerned? It's more

her issue than the material.

I'm sure Enrique could explain it WAY better than me, but here's a mom's

summary: YuGiOh is a TV show that revolves around a young teen, Yugi, and

his friends. They all play a card game (sort of holographic dungeons and

dragons) called Duel Monsters. They play in tournaments. There are various

subplots involving nefarious characters and ancient engyptian spirits, but

that doesn't matter unless you're watching the show on a regular basis.

The trading cards are Duel Monsters cards. Some kids actually duel with

them; Salli's Enrique does -- but he's 16! Most of the grade one and two

kids I've seen with them just collect them, and don't actually play Duel

Monsters, as it has a complicated scoring and strategy system.

I got a pack of 9 trading cards from the tooth fairy this last time.

Cost me $6! DEFINITELY not owrth it for a 6yo who just likes to look at the

pictures.

YiGiOh cards, (just like their predecesor, Pokeman cards), are a real

problem for teachers.

They don't allow trading...and if they even SEE that the kids have cards,

they'll take them away.

You mean like actually believing when he's playing Dracula and I

pretend to be scared, he will stop playing to tell me 'it's ok mama, it's

just me' like he really was Dracula and I really was scared.....only more

serious in this case? I sometimes worry that he's in fantasy land so much

that he doesn't know real from imaginary.

LOL

Dinner conversation in my aspie/autie household while we all watch YuGiOh at

7:30 -- I spent one entire episode explaining to my dh why Yami is sexy

while Yugi is not.

How much does her behaviour deviate from when we were kids and kissed the

pics of Matt Dillon and Tommy Howell we ripped out of Teen Beat? Or made up

fake names and fake lives for ourselves? (when I was 12, I insisted

everyone call me Cassandra)

Is it a lot different from that kind of thing?

With internet, she obviously has more access to stuff than we did -- more

pics, screensavers, etc.

I'm not belittling your worries, I'm just wondering how much further she's

going.

> I'm so scared she's gonna get sucked into this the way some people

I thought most of those kids ended up rich geniuses? Are there horror

stories about it?

And oh gosh if she learns about the

> occult and stuff. She's all into anything mythical as it is, and

I was like that. I believed my whole house was haunted, and actually

witnessed events. (of course, now I know I imagined them, but at the time I

believed it) I had ouija boards and seances. I started reading tarot

cards -- and still do, actually, although I no longer believe they're

mystical.

I think all kids go through a fascination with the occult. It's the idea of

the power of it at a time (adolescence) when you feel you have no power at

all.

What are the things that scare you and make you feel frightened that it will

affect Alyx more negatively than other kids? (again, this is a genuine

question)

Yup! It takes me back to when was 2 1/2 and I'd be complaining about

his out-of-this universe meltdowns and people would say, " But ALL two year

olds have tantrums. " The only answer is " NOT LIKE THIS. "

So I get it. She's going thru the normal stuff, but to NOT-normal extremes.

Right?
