Yes I know, very strange topic indeed. But quick question as I float out of

lurkdom for a second. I keep smelling an unusual odor. My renal function is

not that bad that I would be considering uremia. (Last GFR 44), However I keep

smelling a consistent odor of my skin, (although perhaps could be my breath)

which smells somewhat like urine, but is noticeable anytime of the day,

especially after I sweat even a little bit. I assure you, I shower

consistently at least once a day, and do not have any urinary tract infection

etc. I thought at first it may be my makeup, etc etc etc. however the smell is

there even when I first get out of the shower, and throughout the day and I

brush my teeth consistently several times per day. I have noticed it for about

a month. Totally embarrasing question, but I just finally had to ask it. I

remember saying something like this maybe a year ago or so, but it was

when she was so ill. Has anyone experienced this? No other symptoms with

it, except the usual, excessive fatigue, swelling, and perhaps a bit more

difficulty concentrating and staying focused. The foamy urine has come back as

well, along with the flank pain, but this is not unusual for me. The swelling

is usually fairly well controlled on Lasix and Hydrochlorothiazide. Blood

pressure is finally under pretty good control. Any thoughts? I have not

changed my bathing or laundry soap, nor brand of toothpaste. And it's OK

to joke with me, but please be kind (hehehe) it took me a month to ask this

question. I am aware there is something called uremic fetor, but that is only

when you are very ill with renal disease, correct? Missed you guys, sorry I've

been lurking so long. Hope every one is doing well. Bonnie

Hi Bonnie

By the book, no, this shouldn't happen because it's way too early.

Real life experience, yes, it can happen. It happened to me, but at the

time, I was the only one who could smell it. Nobody else could. I don't know

if it's the sense of smell which is affected or what. I was at about 30%

kidney function at the time. One odd thing about it in particular was that I

seemed to smell it on my fingertips. Another thing I discovered was that

there was a very strong odour of urine on my leather watchband. The only

thing I can guess about this was that my watchband was always up against my

skin and so the uriny smell built up on it over time.

I can't give a scientific explanation for it though.

Bonnie,

I am about where you are on kidney function and have the same

issues. I sweat heavily when I am in the gym and the odor is quite

noticeable and I can smell it on my skin even after I shower. I too

am brushing my teeth frequently. Some days seem worse than others.

Hey Bonnie!

First off nice to see you around again. :o) Secondly I stink too. My

husband can't seem to smell it the days I really can but mine goes from light to

" dang I'm nasty " over time. I use deodorant a lot and lots of Listerine strips.

I'm at about 35% function too. I found that as long as noone else is saying

" man you stink " then it's most likely just my nose or perhaps the fact that my

entire body smells this way I can pick it up more than those around me...who

knows. Foods have also started to taste weird....I've been leaning more toward

spicy Latin cooking lately just to get the strong spices....could be why I smell

so much now...hmmmm I've also noticed a major increase in the potency of my

foot odor recently. Like I can clear a room and leave a vapor trail if I wear

my canvas shoes with no socks for any amount of time. I don't know if that's

due to my function dropping again or what but I sure would love a way to get rid

of the smell that makes my family run when I take off my shoes. :o)

Bonnie! I've missed you so much! How are you doing?

Unfortunately, I dont really know anything about this topic. Have you

talked to your doctor about it? I hope you can get some answers soon!

Hi Bonnie,

Good to hear from you. I have been told that I really have a strong odor

when I run now. I guess for me it is because my function is so low and I am

sweating out many of the toxins.

I don't know if your function could account for it, but it would be worth

asking your Neph. I know it is sometimes hard to bring things up with your

doctor, but it is probably important for your Neph to know.

I do hope your work schedule calms down for you Bonnie.
