Guest guest
My son, Ben, 18 ( diagnosed last fall) was encouraged by his neph to get the flu shot---which Ben had always done since a young kid due to difficulty with fevers. My two cents: The flu can be prevented--and it can be very nasty--our family all get the flu shot every year---even when kids were little. Best protection of all: WASHING HANDS OFTEN and telling people with the flu to STAY HOME! a
Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I know Iga is caused by immune system producing the defective Iga protein to fight the germs in the body, and when one gets respiratory infection, Iga get worse (blood in urine). Is taking vitamin C to prevent cold or flu infection a good idea? Since vitamin C enhance the immune system, and we don't want our immune system to produce anymore Iga. Also, is taking flu shot a good idea? Because flu shot will make immune system to produce antibody for the virus, and not sure if the antibody include Iga protein as well. It seems like a catch 22, we don't want immune system to produce defective Iga protein, but needed to fight the infection. Guest guest
Hi , My son does 500 mg of C twice a day (with the neph's OK). We go back and forth as to flu shots. The year we did flu shots (before diagnosis) both of us got very sick and were in bed for a couple of days. I've kind of avoided them since. This is entirely my own bias however; conventional wisdom says to do flu shots. As always, check with your neph. For many folks (especially those who are immunosuppressed), getting the vaccine is preferable - especially since getting sick can cause a flareup. You raise an interesting point - but the overall risk is associated with the flareup, not any extra antibody. I don't know whether IgA antibodies are produced in response to flu vaccine. I'd assume that IgG antibodies would be produced - but have no hard basis for this assumption. If someone else has more info, please weigh in! Guest guest
My neph also insists that I get the flu shot and if one hasn't had a shot for pneumonia - that one as well. I do wish that people who are ill - stay at home! Also, I'm a huge advocate of washing ones hands frequently and keeping a bottle of soap less wash on my desk and in my purse. Guest guest
Just for the sake of information, the renal vitamins pre-dialysis and dialysis patients usually take contain only 100mg of vitamin, and we're not supposed to be taking larger doses than this. Whether anyone decides to take more is up to each person to decide. Personally, I think prudence would be the keyword here. Guest guest
Hi , For vitamins, I take the renal vitamins prescribed to me by my Neph. He warned me to not take other vitamins outside that one, but then again I am down to 13% function. I do get a flu shot every single year though. I think that although I rarely get sick, it seems when I do, I get very very ill and it takes me longer to recover. The flu shot just seems to be a good insurance policy to avoid getting sick. Guest guest
Pierre, it is a wise point you make. My neph advices to not take vitamin supplements or herbal type extracts. I think people are just unaware that these types of things can be potentially dangerous even though seemingly harmless. Every now and then I receive some unwanted advice about how I should be popping Vitamins A-Z and drinking lots of water. I don't even bother going through my spiel anymore of how neither of those things are good or right for me. The best thing to do is to always clear all things with your neph....better to be safe than sorry. Rita

Rita, me too, lots of advice is always streaming in still ten years later, even from folks who should know better. I smile and say, " Oh, really, " and then move the conversation on. sfbay
Guest guest
I take Vitamin C, and I will be asking about the flu shot this year (I am more than a year post-tx so I should be OK). I did have one every year up to the year of the tx. Ritanuch@... wrote: My neph also insists that I get the flu shot and if one hasn't had a shot for pneumonia - that one as well.
