Guest guest
I have a computer question, if someone is able to help out. I have a fax modem on the computer I just purchased and am working in Windows XP. If I am online working from an FTP site, can I still get faxes at the same time? If you're online via DSL, which leaves your phone line free, then you could receive faxes, yes. Don't see why not. If you're dialing up for your access to the FTP site (or wherever), then obviously your phone line is tied up and you wouldn't be able to receive a fax. Basically, if your phone can still ring while you're surfing the net, you should be able to receive a fax. Otherwise, the only way you could do the two simultaneously (without adding another phone line) would be to receive the faxes through one of those fax-to-email accounts. AFAIK, anyway. Guest guest
I had a feeling I couldn't get the faxes, because I do dial up for my access. What is a fax-to-email account? Thanks for your help! Guest guest
> What is a fax-to-email account? There are some Internet companies that will provide you with a fax number to which people can send faxes, then they arrive in your e- mail inbox as graphic attachments. Efax.com used to be one of them (not sure if they're still around, and am pretty sure that, if they are, they've started charging for the service ... it used to be free). There may be others, and may even be some free ones left, but I'm not sure about that. I think the charge is pretty nominal. It may or may not be worth it to you to look into it. Most probably offer a free trial.
Guest guest
Efax is still free for incoming faxes. It's www.efax.com. You can even get one now through yahoo from Efax. I love it. No fax paper to mess with, comes right to my e-mail and I don't have to be offline to get them. Elisa -- RE: Faxing question > What is a fax-to-email account? Guest guest
The only problem with them is that you can't sent a fax with the free version and the phone number that you get is way out there. Yes, I live in Minnesota and my eFax number was (if I remember correctly) somewhere in the Lake Tahoe, NV area. :-) Not so much of a problem if the folks sending you the fax are long distance, anyway, but it's a long distance call for the guy down the street to send you a fax if it has to route its way 'round the country first before it reaches you. :-)
Guest guest
I use Accessline from which I get an email message saying that a fax has come in for me. I then go online to Accessline and key in my phone number/password and can either send the entire message to my email or fax it to anyone else. I can also read it and print it from there. I chose an 877 number so it costs me about $9.00 per month. Now I can only receive not send from that account. To send a fax I have WinFax set up in my computer. This was a gift to me so I have no idea what it costs and it goes through my phone line so it does tie that up while sending. I don't send that much at one time. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I use efax (www.efax.com). You can set up a free account to receive faxes, but if you go over so many (can't remember how many), you have to convert to a pay account. I paid $100 for a year's service. I can receive faxes from anywhere free and pay .10 per page for sending faxes within the US. The way it works is that you are given a fax number by efax. When ppl send you a fax, it arrives in your email box. It comes with a fax viewer that opens automatically when you open the fax. You can also have voice attached to your faxes, annotations, etc. It's pretty cool. I'm not ever going to buy a fax machine, but I do want to buy a scanner for those times when I need to send something that isn't already a file on my PC. Guest guest
Thanks for everyone's answers to my faxing problem! I really didn't want to have to go out and buy a fax machine, as I just bought a WAV pedal and software yesterday and a new computer and printer two weeks ago. Now I need to work more so I can pay for my upgrades!! LOL Thanks again! Pattie
Guest guest
Actually that is what I do. I scan the document and scan it to my WinFax program. In Winfax I send it to myself since I have a toll free number with Accessline and from there I can email things to whomever I wish to. If the receiver does not have a fax I email it to them from the Accessline set up. It doesn't cost me anything then as I am sending it to a toll free number and when it arrives and I get a message that a fax has arrived, I can just click on Accessline, open my fax and either email it to whomever or fax it or email it to me It only costs me $9.00 per month but that maybe because though I receive a fax from my client every day I rarely use it to send out. Hope this makes sense. Aliceanne At 08:17 AM 5/10/2003 -0500, you wrote: >I use efax (www.efax.com). Guest guest
I use Efax and it's still free to receive faxes. If you want to send faxes, you will need an upgraded account. I have had it for about 4 years now and it works great! The phone number they gave me is not local for me but most people that fax me are from out of town anyway.
