Guest guest
The tonsillar fossa are completely healed. I type this phrase quite often and wonder if it is right or not. Shouldn't it be tonsillar fossae, as plural? Or is fossa singular. Is there one fossa or two down by the tonsils? Suzanne

Guest guest
Okay, I had been convinced that there are two, but know I'm reversing my position! Stedman's had said something similar, not exactly what Gray's said, but enough to create a question in my mind about whether there is one or two. Anyone have a cadaver lying around that we could do a lil research on?! Rennie www.renesue.com Re: Tonsillar fossa plural or sing I found this in Gray's Anatomy: Eash tonsil consists fundamentally of an aggregate of lymphoid tissue underlying the mucous membrane between the palatine arches. The lymphoid mass, however, does not completely fill the interval between the two arches, so that a small depression, the supratonsillar fossa, exists at the upper part of the interval. Further, the tonsil extends for a variable distance under cover of the glossopalatine arch, and is here covered by a reduplication of mucous membrane; the upper part of this fold reaches across the supratonsillar fossa, between the two arches, as a thin fold sometimes termed the plica semilunaris; the remainder of the fold is called the plica triangularis. Hope this helps....sounds like only one fossa to me. Kate

Rennie www.renesue.com Re: Tonsillar fossa plural or sing Ok, this is what I have managed to come up with...When searching on the net I have only been able to get hits on the singular form, tonsillar fossa. I pulled out my anatomy coloring book and it distinctly shows two, one for each tonsil (listed as singular).
Guest guest
No, but there are several people I could be persuaded to kill for this research if y'all promise not to tell anyone who did it. :-) Re: Tonsillar fossa plural or sing Okay, I had been convinced that there are two, but know I'm reversing my position! Guest guest
Forgive me for stating the obvious, folks, but as I stated before.. if we are talking about both tonsils it would be plural fossae. The key here is the context of the sentence. Examples: The right tonsillar fossa was hemostatic (one tonsil, one fossa, singular). The tonsillar fossae were hemostatic (both tonsils, 2 " fossas " so it would be fossae, plural, and as an added bonus, it agrees with the plural verb were.) Jan jantranscribes@...
