I couldn't answer the age question because I don't have an " age " . I am

upfront about Jordan's diagnosis and he will just naturally know about

it as he grows up. Maybe 4 years old is when he'll understand, maybe

sooner, maybe later. Should I just vote 4?

I don't want autism to be something for Jordan to be ashamed of, or to

use as a crutch. It's a challenge in his life that he has to work with.

That's all.

Yes, Debbie I want to know what do you think it is a good age to talk to

them about it or if somebody thinks is better not to have that

conversation.

We have always talked about autism in front of the kids. Not really to them. Whe

we asked Greggory if he knew what autism was he really had no clue but said that

Alec and Jeff were. ;) Now that we have explained autism to greggory he says he

is NOT autistic. Just Alec. And on some days Jeff. LOL

Same here. We've been talking to about autism as long as we've known

he has it. He started to associate the word autistic with himself at around

5 years old, but we've just always put it out there.

I wont change the poll again. Maybe we can say the age when the child

related the word autism to him or herself.

Jacquie H, what did you tell Greggory when he told you he wasn't

autistic?

Hmmmm...now that is a good question. LOL I guess we just didn't press it. I told

him he was, he argued with me. Jeff told him he was, he argued with Jeff. I

figured it didnt really matter. :S

Okay, I revoted & checked " 4-5yo " because it was the youngest age you

have listed. My true vote is ... as soon as they can understand it.

Thanks Debbie. I started with 4 because I thought before that it would

be hard to understand, but maybe it could be at a younger age.

I didn't take the poll because my answer would be " when/if she asked or

when/if I felt it was necessary and that she would understand " .

We talk about autism in front of her all the time.

I tell people she is autistic in her presence.

doesn't seem to affect her either way.
